Private Tales For King and Country

Yes, this is real...All of it..

She wasn't sure when she'd fallen asleep. She'd tried with everything she had to keep her eyes open, but she'd watched the slow rise and fall of his chest and listened to the easy breaths and soft trickle of water, and there was little she could do to fight her exhaustion.

The sky above was a deep purple when she woke, the light of the moons and stars was fading, though the sun had not yet breached the horizon. Her lips curled before she'd gathered the energy to open her eyes. She was wrapped in his arms, enveloped by his warmth. Safe, and so wildly happy. She drew a long breath, filling her lungs and letting it tumble free with ease as she watched him.

Thoughts of their past few months weaved through her mind. Despite what horrors they'd faced, what he'd had to deal with and what trouble still rode close at their heels, seeing him now as he slept so peacefully was enough to expunge every inch of darkness that'd set up home in her mind. This was worth all of it. Never had a man deserved to sleep peacefully more than he, and resisting the urge to kiss him now was a torture she'd happily suffer if it meant allowing him even another minute of it.

And in those moments while she watched him, so surely and sweet, so too was his rest sweet. He'd not slept so fully and comfortably in a lifetime, and he'd have been just as comforted had it been the hard ground they'd slept upon. To rest with Yvaine tucked so close to him made even him feel so safe. Her security was literally in his hands, and feeling her there wrapped under his arm allowed him a reprieve like nothing before - he could rest so wholly knowing she was safely there with him, knowing he could wake and defend her with hardly even a mention.

With how deeply he slept now, that would likely be hard to believe.

But only for a short while after she woke did he slumber so, and soon he began to stir. The slow turn of his head one way. A sharp inhale, and then his free arm drawn up over his head as he started to stretch. His head fell the other way, and his eyes slowly opened revealing foggy pools of blue.

A gentle groan, and then, "good morning," whispered between smiling lips.

She knew, somehow, that whatever spell they'd been wrapped in the day before had worn off, and if possible she only felt happier to know that and to still feel the unfamiliar swell in her chest as she watched him wake. That gritty quality of his voice was the most soothing of sounds to her ears, that smile and fathomlessly blue eyes the most serene of sights. Yvaine smiled brightly, and though she knew the feelings they'd expressed were real, she couldn't help but feel relief that he'd awoken smiling as he was.

"Good morning." Yvaine replied, and now that she felt safe to move she too stretched and shifted up onto an elbow to settle her hand on his chest. She could only smile at him and her teeth latched onto her lower lip. "I hope you slept as well as I did.." she said quietly, not wishing to break the serenity by speaking too loudly.

Yvaine had never had as much trouble with patience as she was having right now. It'd been hours since he'd kissed her, and yet it felt like days since she'd tried this new, sweet thing that she found herself now craving more of. Her hair, now dry, hung in waves, framing her fresh and rested face as she beamed down at him. She was smiling too much, and she laughed at herself, but it was so surreal that it was almost palpable.

Slowly, a hand drew up to her face. It brushed gently across her skin, and traced carefully and slid softly along until his hand cupped behind her ear. He couldn't help but examine every ounce of her countenance again, marveling in the lack of Itae-O'mel's magics and how little their absence did to affect him. Actually, it would seem, their absence would spur even more joy in him. In the sobriety of his thought and emotion, he felt whole and truthfully as he should towards her - he thought at least. The magic might have helped, but he certainly didn't need it.

He was hardly nervous now, after all, with her laying there beside him, her hand on his chest. He took in her smile, chuckled at her laugh, and let his hand gently tug at her.

"I slept wonderfully," he said, and slowly pulled her down onto him and into an embrace of both his arms and his lips.

Gods. She thanked them, every single one who would listen as she rejoiced the reunion of their lips. She let out a breathy laugh into the kiss and responded with every ounce of everything that she felt, her hand on his neck, his jaw, his hair. She wanted to kiss him until she was sick of it, for she knew that was a time that'd never come.

First light was yet to break, the others would no doubt sleep for hours yet, and Yvaine had absolutely no intention of leaving this room any time soon. She kissed him until she was breathless and broke away only to look down at him, their noses still brushing, and she swallowed nervously. The smile she wore was shy, but her eyes and the way she breathed his name would no doubt betray her desire to be know him better.

She was his, heart, soul and body.

Beneath the veil of her silken hair, smelling so sweetly to him, it was far to easy to get lost in her touch. And each one warranted a response. Fingers drawn gently through precious brown locks, and firm and tender hand ran down her back. When her lips departed from him, his eyes opened to her and he stifled his breath. He studied her for a moment, and when she whispered his name he could not hold back the well of... something that rose in him. His hands came to her cheeks where he cradled them, his lips softly pecked at hers and then withdrew.

Longing. That was it. It almost hurt.

He studied her again with hands so calloused yet so tender, so delicately beholding such beauty... until finally the strength beneath him fell away like shattered glass, and he disappeared into the well of his desire.

With a whisper he brushed his nose against hers, then kissed her softly. His hand sought for the skin around her waist, and his nails dragged gently across her skin as it ran slowly up her back. His palm splayed open between her shoulders, and carefully he pulled her again back down onto him...

She wasn't quite sure how much time had passed, only that the sun had risen and she could've sworn someone had been outside the door with a breakfast tray some time ago but had clearly thought better of disturbing them. Yvaine had revelled in every unfamiliar sensation, and she realised now as she lay in the tangle of sheets and limbs that she had never known the true meaning of bliss until now. Her entire body thrummed with it, and she took her time tumbling down from those heady heights that he'd driven her to.

Her lashes brushed slowly against his chest as she lay tracing idle circles and sighing deeply. They hadn't spoken yet, there hadn't been any need to, but now she tilted her head to look up at him, her skin flushed and dewy. She smiled, propping herself onto her elbow and curling her hair around her ear as she leaned to leave a trail of feathery kisses on his chest.

"We should... Probably go join the others.." she said with a breathy laugh and turned her gaze up at him once more. She'd have happily stayed right here for the entire duration of their time here, but she knew the others would expect to see him. Then again, it was likely no secret that the Captain had shared her bed, and her cheeks warmed as she could only imagine what whispers were shared over breakfast this morning.

For a time it might have seemed like he'd fallen back asleep. He hadn't, not quite, but the gentle exhaustion he felt resonating through every part of him, and the feeling of her warmth as she rested against him, it all pushed him into quite possibly the most relaxed state he'd ever experienced. He felt her head lift, and though he made no motion he did smile, and hum just so...

She spoke to him, and he opened his eyes to look at her, "Probably..." he said, the corner of his lips curling up just a little.

He couldn't help it then, but he couldn't take his eyes off of hers. His hand brush through the ends of her hair, and then gently dragged across her back. He poured affection into his touch, soaking in every second he shared with her like this. But it hadn't just but their touch, their flesh - but the depth in her eyes, her voice in his ear...

He pushed himself up enough to slowly place a gentle kiss against her lips.

Of course he knew she was right, they should likely go and meet with the others. It was of course, quite simply, the most difficult thing he could possibly do in this moment.

Yvaine felt the same, familiar flutter as she always did when he looked at her that way, but this time her heart stumbled so hard that it ached. That last few hours played over in her mind, no doubt obvious from the adoration that she beamed back at him with.

The hand dragging so gently across her skin tore those ridiculous notions of tearing himself away from him so soon and she melted into him with a smile against his lips and a throaty sound of approval. She wanted to kiss him until she was sick of it, for she highly doubted that day would ever come to exist. That they'd shared such feelings for so long made these moments all the sweeter, and yet she couldn't help but feel that they were owed this time. They didn't need to do as they were told here, they didn't have to adhere to responsibilities or care what anyone would say or think.

"Perhaps a little while longer.." she whispered with a breathy laugh before recapturing his lips greedily, her fingers splaying across the stubble of his jaw. She hadn't realised how sorely she'd wanted this, to be held in such a way by such caring arms, and she soaked in every minute of it as though she'd been let into the warmth after a lifetime in winter.

It wasn't easy to push the fear from her mind, not when she knew that there were things in the world outside waiting to tear them from one another. Minutes had passed before she drew back only enough to look over his face once more. Just to look at him. Were they ever strangers? She wasn't sure they were. If it had been anyone else who'd been set upon the task that her uncle had given him, would she have been so eager to smuggle herself away? There had been something there, like the orange glow of the sun waiting to burst over a dark horizon. It was light for their eyes only, the dawn of the people they were destined to be.

She had no idea what obstacles they were yet to face, and if there was anything she'd learned from the days passed, other than how much she needed him, it was that regrets were built upon things unsaid.

"I love you.. My Faulkin." she smiled and let out a deep sigh she hadn't realised she'd been holding. If he didn't know already, then she had to make sure that no matter what happened, he knew it now. "More than I knew possible." she added.. Just to be sure.

“I love you.. My Faulkin.” she said.

In his time, there had been no sweeter sound than those words on her voice, and in truth... he never really knew what it meant until now.

His reply was quiet at first. It came through in his eyes, in his touch. His gentle kiss.

“My Yvaine…” he said, his lips still so close, his voice only a whisper, “I have loved you for so long from so far away...”

Another gentle kiss.

"I will always be yours.”

Were he to have his way, he'd have ran with her. He'd have taken her away from this place, to find safety and be quietly alone with her, to keep her from what he knew was coming. Their hostess had more to share with them, and the thought of Yvaine enduring anymore hardship mourned him. Such could surely be felt as his hand softly caressed her cheek before reaching - hesitantly- to the door to open it. And of course he did open it, knowing full well that in reality there was little choice. Whether he liked it or not, these people were the best chance they had to understand what was going on, and what darkness had taken interest in Yvaine.

He took her hand in his and stepped out into the hallway. He couldn't help but smile at Yvaine after looking down at the tray left for them. There was little point in moving it now. It was long past breakfast time.

Through the corridor was as magical as ever. This entire place appeared to have been encased in ice, and frost kissed the walls and the flora within, sparkling in the light of the day - yet no cold touched them as they walked.

Finally they arrived at the staircase, and below there was only one waiting for them. She stood with her back to the entry, her arms crossed, and though her face was still quite covered, there was a clear look of amusement in the elven woman's eyes. Though, Faulkin was not entirely sure she was actually an elf...

"Well rested, I presume?" she said, then she beckoned to them with the gentle wave of her hand, saying, "come... it will be... easier this time."

She had read poetry, once or twice. Mouthed written sonnets and delicately strung quotes about love and what it felt like. They were inspired, she knew now, but they could never adequately capture the golden strands of emotion that tumbled around in her chest whenever she looked at him. This feeling would transcend all time and distance.. mortality. It was the greatest wonder, weightless and invisible as it was, and it flowed through her quietly, peacefully.. Strong. She wouldn't try to put it into pretty words, she would simply feel it and know that he did too. She'd make sure he knew she felt it, every single day.

Hers. Always. His. Forever.
There was nothing complicated about it.

"That sounds torturous.." she whispered her reply with a small smile and a soft frown, but she too recalled how her heart would stumble at the sight of him, and the ache she felt at not being able to speak to him. After all these years of feeling like she didn't belong, she'd found her place in this world.

It felt strange to leave their room, to step into the open for the first time since her life had changed entirely. Now that she could so openly hold his hand and press her cheek to his upper arm as she stood beside him. She could kiss him, and he her, if they so wished... right out here in the open for anyone to witness. It was...liberating, and Yvaine didn't care to hide how happy she was.

Arriving at the top of the stairwell, she felt her cheeks warm at the look of amusement on the female's face as she looked up at them.. "Very much so.. Thank you." she answered coyly and curled a stray tress of hair around her pointed ear. She glanced up at Faulkin and nodded. She wasn't afraid of what she might have to face today, not any more. She was ready.

"Did the others rest well?..." Yvaine enquired casually as they followed, her gaze wandering the glittering walls. The frost had come as she had promised, and such a prediction had only bolstered her trust that this woman spoke the truth.. "And the men tracking us.. Are they?.." she didn't finish the sentence. She'd known Dalgarren for many years. Gods, there had been talk of her marrying the man, but regardless of how awful he was, Yvaine was not the type to wish death on any.

Itae-O'mel waited quite contently for them to traverse down the stairs and draw near. She acknowledged Faulkin, but was - as usual, and as expected - far more interested in Yvaine. The way her eyes followed the young elf were hardly inconspicous, blatant in their study of her, but far from malevolent. It seemed instead, even moreso this day, to be brimming with fondness. To Faulkin, this was a comfort, as when it came to these elves that had come across, she was likely the most formidable. Her stature, her confidence - there was far more to her than met the eye. The way even their apparent chieftain Joran had bowed to her was done so with virtually no hesitation.

She was beyond them in some way, and he could feel it.

So here, in this place, they were in fact as safe as they could possibly be. Or at least, that is what Faulkin began to believe.

She regarded each of them as they came to her side, and she gestured again down a familiar corridor, back to the pool in the pedestal, and talked with them as they walked, saying with a sideways glance and an endearing hum, "perhaps, not as well."

Well there are certainly no secrets here,
Faulkin thought, pursing his lips a bit to hide his own smirk.

"The men tracking you have, apparently, come more prepared than I had predicted..." she said, "your people have become very resourceful throughout the years, dear Captain. But they are of no concern to us here. They will never find this place."

Coming back to the pedestal, she turned to them, saying, "it was only I who allowed you and yours to come here. Joran's... appetite, can be intrusive. But make no mistake, he will ensure none of those men step foot on El'thulian land. There are far greater things to worry of..."

Itae-O'mel's hand moved over the waters, like them untouched by the cold, and an image took shape in them. A great and prosperous city, with a tower that reached high, built of stone and lush with green, bathed in the light of the sun.

"Do you know this place, Yvaine?"

It wasn't an odd thing to be stared at. She had grown up being something different, something strange and perplexing to everyone who ever looked upon her pointed ears. But to be looked upon with such penchant was an odd sensation to endure, especially from one so intense, and so she squeezed gently at the sturdy hand in hers as she offered the female a soft, uncertain smile.

Yvaine felt the delicate blush bloom on her dewy cheeks at the answer she was given, a silent gasp drawn and a glance cast up at Faulkin, catching his smirk and finding one of her own. The tone of the conversation dipped at the second answer, however, and a spark of fear ignited in her chest. They may never find this place, but she and the others could not stay here forever, and Dalgarren and his men were just another force intent on tearing Faulkin from her side.

She nodded at Itae-O'mel's assurance, that they were safe whilst they were here, but there was a sombreness to her gaze as it fell once again on the pedestal. Yvaine was a little more tense than she realised as she stood before the basin of water again, her mind cast back to the horrors she'd seen and the demon who'd left her mark on her skin.

A deep breath filled her lungs and tumbled from her lips before she stared down into the water and watched the image of a vaguely familiar city manifest itself on its surface.

'Do you know this place, Yvaine?'
Her brow creased as she stared at it, unsure until she saw the tower, and then her head nodded. "Yes. I - I think so.. Though, I saw it fall into destruction. I saw.." she frowned, recalling the sight of the dead faces, of the piles of burning bodies, of the face of the demon who sat upon its throne.

"What is this place?Is.. Is what I saw before a vision of the past, or future.. Or the present? Is it true at all?" she frowned.

To hear of Dalgarren's men having survived the sudden cold that had gripped this land was concerning. And even though Itae-O'mal assured them their safety, by her own admittance, she'd been wrong before. She predicted their pursuers' demise, and yet they pursued them still. For now. But he did at least take from her words that they were safe here for the moment. So as they made their way into the familiar chamber, he once again took up his watchful position, just a few steps behind Yvaine, this time with his arms crossed loosely over his chest, his composure more relaxed.

He did at least trust Itae-O'mel now, that she intended no harm, so he was content to observe without alarm as she began.

"What is this place? Is..
Is what I saw before a vision of the past, or future.. Or the present? Is it true at all?"

"What you saw is what is to come, but it has already begun... and what you see here, is what was. This is the heart of Aeraesar, as it once was..." her solemn stare fell upon the image, and then the waters shifted,"... and as it could be again."

And the water continued to shift and whirl, until again an image took shape. This time there were high hills and jagged cliffs, snow covered pines, and a structure. It was a vast and tall castle, and rested on the steep slope of a great mountain. It was cold, and quiet. As the image took shape, Faulkin was drawn closer and even entranced. Even she, Itae, seemed fixated upon it. And for them looking upon the water, their perspective drew closer, descending upon a cool path just a short distance from the structure, and all the while the image became more real.

There was a cool breeze that licked at his skin, and snow that gathered round his planted feet. He looked to his left, where Yvaine stood just as she always was. He looked to Itae, likewise standing exactly where he expected her. Her eyes had raised too, but were fixed upon him now. Then he looked back to the pedestal. Something gripped at him, at his very essence. It was not exactly uncomfortable, but it was not exactly harmless. It perturbed him, and before he knew it, the pedestal was gone. Beneath him was cold ground, and around him were snow covered pines. Again he faced each of them, right where they were supposed to be, only no longer did he see the safety of Itae's abode surrounding them.

"Where are we?" Faulkin asked, almost meekly.

"We are still where we were, only now we are also here."

Placed in the midst of the cool path they'd seen, now they stood on the road to that grand structure they'd been shown just before. Though it seemed now that while they were here, everything seemed strange. Voices were somewhat muffled, colours a little less vibrant, and even the sense of touch was lessened. To Faulkin at least, it was a most peculiar experience, as well as unnerving.

Itae looked between the two of them, unwavering in her confident composure. Most certainly she was in control of this entire experience.

~ Aeraesar Aeraesar Aeraesar esar sar Aeraes Aeraesar sar sar esar ~
Yvaine grimaced at the assault of those whispers only she ever seemed to hear, her eyes closing tightly for a moment until they passed and left her a little dizzy on her feet. "Yes.. I believe something has been trying to guide me to this place.." she said with quiet trepidation, her fingers curling around the stone lip of the basin before her, steadying her sway.

With another long and deep breath she refocused, her golden eyes opening to capture the reflection of the twisting scene that they were suddenly immersed in entirely. Her head snapped up, no longer having to look into the surface of the water to see the vision Itae was showing her.

The half-elf drew in a soft gasp, on one hand it was incredibly wonderful to behold such magic, and on the other, she had been taught to fear such power as this. Her gaze swept over her surroundings as she stepped toward Faulkin, her hand outstretched toward him, fearing that they might somehow be separated..

How could they possibly be in two places at once?

"Please, just tell us what it is that we're supposed to do." she asked with an edge of impatience to her tone now. She was growing tired of the little surprises around every corner, of every unanswered question or cryptic answers, of not understanding what any of this had to do with her. She was tired of feeling so helpless and afraid.

"Tell us how to stop this."

"What you are supposed to do my dear?"

Itae smiled as she responded to Yvaine's obvious frustration, and then without another word turned away and started walking in the direction of the strange castle. Faulkin looked to Yvaine with a confused look, but took her hand and started to follow.

"It is not what you are supposed to do that will matter, but it is what you choose to do."

Each step felt odd, almost weightless, and it felt as though the ground would give way beneath his feet, yet it didn't. The cold bit at him, but only delved so deep. And he could have sworn when he reached out his hand against the wind, while there were some snowflakes that landed and melted against his skin, there were others that passed right through. Before he could question Itae on this, she spoke again.

They were drawing near to the castle.

"This place is a refuge, one which was taken up after a great fall. You will find no evil here..."

They approached great wooden gates, and they were made open to them with the wave of Itae's hand. They entered in, and though there were torchlights lit, and clear signs of occupation, there was no one present to greet them. Through the courtyard they traveled, taking only a short time to reach the entryway to the keep, and it too was made open to them.

"What is this place," asked Faulkin.

"This is where the remains of the Broken Tribe dwell, having fled from the darkness of Aeraesar."

The door opened, and within they beheld a great room. In its center was a large pedestal several meters wide. Suspended several meters above it by some unseen force was an enormous, glowing crystal. It shone a brilliant blue light that grew and faded with a gentle and soothing pulse. Around it were several individuals wrapped in robes, and they regarded the great crystal with reverence, and prayed. They paid no heed to those who entered, even as they came near.

When Itae had come just a short distance from the crystal she stopped and turned to them.

"It is in my memory that you see now as you do, for I have been here, and I have seen. It is here you must come, Yvaine, and you will find your people..." she paused, and turned her attention back onto the crystal, "and you will finally learn the truth."

Yvaine's lips pressed into a thin line in the first visible sign of frustration, as it seemed that every time the woman spoke, the more questions Yvaine was left with. Rather than press pointlessly, she let out a slow sigh and drew her attention back toward the castle ahead.

What she chose to do... She wondered what choices she would face, and whether the woman guiding them already knew what would come to pass. It was clear that Itae wasn't about to write down some detailed instruction for them to follow, and so she would take all she could get out of the woman and simply try to trust that she would land on the right path, and make the right choice. Still, she couldn't help but think of the horrors she and the others had witnessed in person, nor the ones she'd watched in Itae's vision. What possible power could she have to wield against any of those things? If her entire tribe had failed to stop them, what use could she possibly be?

One step at a time, Evie.. She recalled her mother's voice into her mind with a soft smile at the comfort it brought, and a gentle squeeze of Faulkin's hand reminded her that she wasn't alone. He was the strongest man she'd ever known, and he would stay with her. She watched him reach out to catch snowflakes and her chest squeezed at how quickly she was reminded of the boy she'd watched grow with her, and how visible he still was in his handsome face. The smile she wore now spoke of how much she loved him, and how thankful she was that he was here with her, wherever they were or were not.

Her attention returned to Itae as she spoke and to the great gates that opened to invite them in. She hadn't felt afraid in this place even before Itae had assured them of its safety, and she had felt somewhat comfortable in fact, before she spoke of who had lived here. She glanced at Faulkin with a sparkle of curiosity in her golden eyes before the door opened to another chorus of whispers. She was getting better at silencing them, having learned that assurance rather than denial had seemed to assuage them.

Yes, she would listen. Yes, she would come home.

Something pulled at her then, and if she had not already been walking toward the circle of elves and the crystal they surrounded, it would no doubt have forced her forward. Memories, some her own, others that she was sure were not, flashed in her mind. The crystal and the creature who had tainted it, the robed elves who died protecting it, the blazing forests and the hell beast that rose from them.. the horde of twisted creatures that followed. Her hand tightened on Faulkin's ever-so-slightly as she fought to keep her mind here and now, wherever here and now was. Her brow had already grown clammy with the effort.

Yvaine's gaze swept slowly around the ring of hooded elves, and back to the crystal Itae had stood before. She nodded, having already known that would be her instruction, and somehow she already knew that she'd know the way here. "Thank you Itae." she smiled, and looked back to the elf stood closest to her. "We will leave as soon as the frost thaws.."

"...as soon as the frost thaws.."

Only a few short weeks passed, and the frost indeed thawed. All that ice which had showered the swampland in an array of light melted away, and before long, the familiar dankness returned. The air became even thicker, and the land wetter than before. But for Faulkin and his men, for Yvaine, the hardships that the land offered were paltry next to what they had endured.

So as they made their way through the swamp-land, not the muck gathering and weighing on their boots or the incessant harassment of insects detered their resolve - a newfound resolve. No longer would they say they stood for king and country. No. Now they marched in the name of she who their captain pledged himself to unwaveringly. And as he marched they would also - for Yvaine.

"It will take you some time, but you must continue toward the west. Follow the forest along her northern edge... avoid the humans in Vel Anir... avoid the elves in Fal'Addas... to the portal stone. It will take you to Sheketh. She dwelt there, and so to do they now, as that is a place where she would now almost never go. The road will not be kind, captain..."

Leaving Itae-O'mel and the El'thulian people behind was bittersweet. They were a formidable people, no doubt quite capable in combat, and for the most part seemed an honourable sort. But Faulkin was hardly wounded to have seen the last of Joran. After their altercations, it was something of an accomplishment to Faulkin that he never challenged the chieftain after Itae's initial interference. He so would have liked to settle the score... perhaps some other time. So instead, as the forest grew denser and the swamp dwindled away, he offered one final glance back into the misty lands. Despite of how dreary it appeared, despite how arduous their being there had been for a time, there would always remain something special about this place to him.

As the men following behind him came nearer, he turned away again and carried on away from there and on into more familiar terrain. And there at the front, with Yvaine by his side and with Alwin and Tor by their flanks, they set off on a new leg in their journey.

"Are you ready," he asked, taking Yvaine's hand in his.

Was she ready? The longer she had spent in the strange little sanctuary, the more dread hung on the thawing of frost. The more time she had to appreciate this sense of peace she had found by Faulkin’s side, amongst his friends, their friends, the less she wanted to leave and risk losing any of it.

They were moving further into the perilous jaws of danger for her now. By choice and not by command, and the guilt was a heavy and uncomfortable thing to wear, though she managed to find some reprieve from the daunt here and there. It was in the moments of laughter around the hearth, of listening to the stories of boys now soldiers and in laying content in her Faulkin’s arms. How could she ever truly be ready to leave this?

Her golden gaze was full of memory as she cast it back, narrowing her eyes in the hopes of catching one last glimpse of their retreat, or of Itae. The time spent with her too had been invaluable over these past weeks, and in them Yvaine had managed to find some better understanding of herself through the female’s cryptic conversations. She had shown them the way.. If only she could have offered her more in the way of affirmation that they would survive their endeavours..

They had a part to play, and playing it would be their only chance at peace, for if they did not take the path set before them she knew her mind would be forever tormented by guilt. She wasn’t a coward, but now she had so very much to lose.

One step at a time, Evie.’ her mother’s memory whispered and she drew in a deep breath, finally nodding a quick response and flashing a warm smile of reassurance to the Captain.

“Ready.” she answered, and squeezed his hand gently as she took it.

It was good to walk for a while after being confined to their holdings. Neither Veres nor Juniper could contain their excitement now that they were back on the road, and she found herself smiling as she watched the little vixen scamper from one side of the path to the other with her nose to the ground.

“I wonder if we will see her again..” she said with another glance over her shoulder, feeling eyes on her back and half expecting to see her stood there, ominously watching. There weren’t many who could sneak up on Yvaine, but Itae had a talent for the sort of silence that rivalled the keenest of ears.

As liberating as it had felt to walk, being in her saddle again sent a rush of nostalgia through the young elf. Veres had been her freedom within the walls of Drennantor, and had been a saviour since. A beast meant for Dargarren but broken by her, they shared a begrudged bond that she would forever (and rather smugly) cherish. The inky friesian’s head lifted proudly as Yvaine whispered a few words of elven tongue to him with a pat to his neck.

“Have any of you ever travelled so far?” Yvaine asked, the sunrise casting a ruby glow over them as they crested a hilltop and looked out over the vast landscape ahead of them. None of the land they could see had been touched by the darkness. Not yet, and for another still moment, it was easy to forget the plague that was so quickly spreading across their world.

He smiled at her and nodded. She was ready, and he was ready too. Gods willing, there would be nothing set in their way that would stay them from what they sought. Faulkin and his men would see to that, or fall for the cause.

"I don't think that is the last we've seen of any of them," he replied.

"I for one wouldn't mind never setting foot there again," Tor interjected, the gruff in his voice betraying his distaste.

"I will miss that Olwynn, though..." Alwin lamented, his eyes trailing off to peer through the trees.

Tor huffed, replying, "didn't she toss you around the sparring ring like a rag-doll?"

He turned to Tor with stars clear in his eyes, "and I've never felt anything like it!"

Tor and a few of the men close by erupted with laughter. Faulkin too chuckled a bit, and cast Yvaine a sly smile. He supposed he could relate to Alwin, only his own heart did not ache with distance. He had everything he needed right by his side.

“Have any of you ever travelled so far?”
"Tor is much more traveled than most of us, but I believe Arrador and Chrissen have been to Belgrath before."

"Aye, they went with me. Girrel and Daryn had too."

There was silence for a moment. Girrel and Daryn had given themselves valiantly in battle so that others might live the night they were attacked and fled to Milvahn. They were great warriors.

"As for the rest of us, this is the farthest we have ever been from home."

Yvaine paid each of the men her attention as they spoke, her lips curling a slow smile until it broke into soft laughter that mingled with their own. Her eyes caught Faulkin's and lingered on the smile he too wore, and there was that familiar flutter in her chest, like her very soul trembled.

A sombre sigh tumbled from her as the joy withered from her face, replaced by condolence as she reached to rest a hand upon Tor's forearm with a gentle squeeze.

"I wish I'd had more time to know them, as I have each of you." she said quietly, her slender brow furrowing as she cast her eyes over each of them. "I'm grateful to have all of you on the road with me.. But please know that I would not think you any less wonderful or any less brave should you wish to remain at a quiet town along the way.." she dipped her chin, and her hand rose at the first sign of protest.

"That's all that need be said on the matter." she nodded firmly, and her shoulders rose and fell with a breath as her fingers curled around the reins of her mount, whose hooves scuffed at the ground.

"Now.. I believe, the horses could do with stretching their legs a little.." Her lips twisted as she cast a mischievous, sidelong glance at Faulkin before clicking her tongue, and the friesian took off down into the valley leaving the soft sound of laughter on the wind.

When night had come, there was certainly no debate that the horses' legs had been properly stretched. One need only look to their riders. They all rested rather quietly, with soft laughter rising here and there from time to time. And though they were still deep within the Falwood, they'd come to a place where the trees were sparse. A clear, star filled sky was above them. Lessat and Pneria both hung high above, peeking from behind Arethil's shadow. And for the first time in quite a while, there was an air of contentment among the company of now wayward warriors as they gathered around a handful of close fires.

Several of the men had left a short while ago for a patrol of the surround...

The campfires were distant, but their light could still be seen. They weren't that far away. Randall and Nakios were some of Faulkin's best men, and they had the sharpest ears. Trennan and Dari were pretty good too, probably why they were the second group of scouts sent out. Often they'd worked in these pairings, as Faulkin had obviously picked up on how well they complimented each other's talents. It is one of the things that had made him such a great leader in their eyes, and one of the reasons they'd all chosen to follow him instead of their own king, their own country.

Some of them had even left families behind...

Some of them worried what had become of those families...

But in each of them was resolve to push on as their duty required. They were all warriors, and honour bound them to their ways. But more than this, friendship had bonded them together, and kept them. No only did these two pairings set out to keep watch work so well, but all of them together had. It was why they'd been the best.

"I don't see anything," Nakios said, tracking his eyes across as far as he could see.

"Nor do I," replied Randall.

Their voices were hushed all the same. Just because they couldn't see an adversary didn't mean there was not one nearby. And so they maintained their vigilance for a time, until at last it truly seemed futile. There was nothing out there, nothing following them, or at least, there was no sign of it. So they'd return to the camp, which would only take a short time...

Faulkin sat near the fire, his legs stretched out before him, his arms propping him up. They'd deserved this quiet night away from others, just amongst themselves. It was easy to feel comfortable listening to only the crackling fire and the sound of friendly chatter around them.

"So Yvaine," someone finally said, "what do you think of everything that priestess told you? Do you really think we can trust her?"

Faulkin would have interjected, but by now, he knew she could speak her mind among the men and they'd hear her out. She'd earned far more than that by now.

Yvaine sat cross-legged and wrapped in her blanket on her bedroll. Her gaze was heaven-bound and wandering the stars, and a small smile had settled on her lips as she lost herself in wonder. She found the crackling fire to have the same soothing effect as her fountains, and so her mind remained here within the small group rather than absorbing every sound that surrounded them. She trusted Faulkin's men, and so for now she'd allow herself to relax.

Juniper lay curled in her lap as Yvaine's fingertips combed her fingers gently through the orange fur between her ears. Those ears pivoted toward the voice that spoke, and Yvaine dragged her gaze from the skies to settle warmly on the speaker.

"Yes.. I do." she answered. "I had already seen some of what Itae showed me in her visions, and we have all already witnessed the darkness and rot spreading across the world. I have no reason to question the truth of what she has shown me.. I only wish she could have told me more.. For that, I have to keep following the path she has shown me and hope that when the time comes I know what my purpose is.. And that I'm able to fulfil it." she added with a fleeting frown.

She did of course worry that she would fail. It was difficult to feel assurance and belief in herself when she had no idea what she had to do, but all she could do was trust in Itae that she would know.

"She showed me where I came from, a community of elves named 'The Broken Tribe'.. If I can find them.. If there are any of them left, then they can help me understand more." she offered a small smiled which she cast to Faulkin with a short shrug. "At least I hope so.."

"What's that?" hissed Nakios.

He and Randall were both sharp in their sudden movements, silently ducking beneath the cover of nearby brush.

"What is it? Did you hear something?"

"Yes, I- there!"

The pair of them sprang out, though Randall was only acting on instinct and total trust in his comrade's senses, as he'd not yet seen or heard anything. So when they rushed into action, drawing their swords and preparing to strike, he was indeed shocked when his eyes fell upon what Nakios had detected. It stopped both of them in their tracks.

"It's... you!"

There was no debate that they had borne witness to things more horrid than their darkest dreams, but there did seem to be an air of reluctance. There were murmurs of distrust in what the priestess had said, but to them the full scope of what had been revealed was likely difficult to comprehend secondhand. Some of them found it difficult to trust in people who had nearly executed their captain, and then proceed to do who knows what else. But then again, it was this priestess who had but a stop to it.

A more distant voice rose up, "well we trust you Yvaine!"

There was no debate there, and even those earlier dissenters were in agreement with this.

Faulkin placed his hand against her back as he smiled at her, saying, "we're all with you."

"I still think using the portal stones is dangerous,"
Tor protested, "we'll be vulnerable on both sides."

"Getting there like this will take far too long, and besides, we'd have to turn around."

Faulkin looked up into the sky, and thought for a moment. There was no reason to believe those monsters would be able to follow them all this way. He did however worry about those that they'd left behind in Drennantor... if only the King had not seemingly fell into injustice, sending his own guard to slay them, and worse.

"This is the best way to get us there, and the sooner we understand what is happening, the sooner we can do something-"

"Captain!" Randall's voice was unmistakable, and the urgency it carried ensnared his attention. Faulkin turned to see Randall approaching with Nakios by his side... and someone in tow. Someone he'd hardly expected to see out in these parts. He stood, and turned to greet Olwynn.

"Well now, El'thulian, to what do we owe this encounter?"

"She
sent me, to aid you in your journey," came Olwynn's sharp reply. Then her head canted over to see Yvaine, who upon seeing continued with, "to ensure she lives."

"well we trust you Yvaine!"
A statement as terrifying as it was inspiriting. Her chest tightened with trepidation as her heart squeezed with appreciation of their devotion. But Gods, what if she was wrong? If she led these men to their deaths through her own naivety, she would never forgive herself.

Faulkin's hand on her back dragged her mind back to where she sat and she turned to him, his gentle voice and sedative smile easing her as always. He never failed to hold her up.. "I know.." she answered him with a soft smile, and leaned into him as they debated their path. She'd been quite content to let her eyes close then and listen to the men speak for they knew more about such things than she did, but Randall's voice washed all thought of rest from her mind with a sudden wave of panic.

She sat bolt upright, her head snapping toward the voice and her senses on high alert, but fear gave way to confusion when she set her gaze on Olwynn.

To ensure she lives...
There was an unexpected stab of anger at the elf's answer, and given their prior discussions, she doubted many would be comfortable with Itae's eyes being amongst them. Yvaine pushed herself to her feet, her brow furrowed as she shook her head slowly..

"Why now?" she asked. If she had sent Olwynn to go after them, she had made the decision after they had left. Had she seen something? Or, had Olwynn hoped to remain unseen on their trail? "What has changed since we left alone?" she asked, her tone thick with scrutiny. Yvaine couldn't look at the woman without seeing the anger in which the female had glared at her with before, nor without feeling the memory of her arms tight around her, restraining her whilst Joran intended to murder the man she loved before her very eyes. She had trusted Itae, but not them, not after what they'd done.

"I am quite sure those I travel with are more than capable of keeping me safe." she frowned, cradling the sleepy vixen in her arms who let out a quiet growl as she yawned, as though to voice her agreement.
