Allir Reach - West, Near the Spine

Saul wrenched his sword free from the corpse, already congealed blood pulling at it's steel surface as if trying to keep it in place. He scowled behind his helmet. "Fucking ghouls."

The Templar said as he kicked the body, turning away and inspecting the edge of his blade. The runes carved throughout it's steel still held of course, the lattice of silver carved throughout it seeming to hold just fine. A sigh escaped him as he slowly shook his head.

A dozen of his men walked slowly around the destroyed village, their swords just as covered in blood as his own as they continued the filthy work.

Bodies lay strewn everywhere, and the odd forest of crosses hung over them. The men and women lashed to them seemed to stare, their eyeless gaze as unsettling as a demon's maw. He frowned as he looked up at them, shaking his head again in a mixture of disgust and disappointment.

The Necromancer had not been kind to this place.

He understood the ghouls, there were always ghouls, but the crosses were...unusual. Berrick thought that it must have been a part of some ritual, something to do with summoning a wight or a stronger spirit than just a few ghouls. Saul wasn't so sure. Sometimes Necromancers were just unhinged, and he had a feeling this one met the mark.

"Cut them down." Saul called to the others. "Burn the bodies with the rest."

You never could be too sure with something like this. Half of those hanging dead from a cross today could be ghouls running through the countryside tomorrow. Better safe than sorry, especially with that damned Necromancer running around.

Voraak crept over the hill which overlooked a small village. His cowl covered most of his head along with his long hair, ice blue eyes penetrating the village.

The Necromancer is doing their work aren't they?
He pondered. Holding his right hand outward, a raven came to perch to listen to Voraak's words.
"Go forth young one, tell me what lies in the village." The young raven cawed as it launched off it's masters hand.

Figures could be seen in the village itself and Voraak wanted to know who they were. Necromancy was a dark subject, but it was another field of magic he would study in; in hopes that he would achieve higher knowledge. Perhaps he should go under the guise of a wayward warrior and follow these figures to the Necromancer?

Either way, he would have to fight or deliberate at some point.

"Maybe the Necromancer would reward me with knowledge if I assist" He grinned maliciously.

He didn't enjoy killing others but such would be the price of admission in order to gain further knowledge in forbidden magicks. Drawing his sword, he inspected the blade which had dried blood from his last battle--an unfortunate Orc who withheld vital information that would aid this dark scholar.

The smell of fire and smoke filled the air as the village was further decaying from the Necromancer's assault. Kneeling down, the Elbion mage surveyed the area furthermore, waiting for his messenger to return.

Arkarnianna walked up to the pile of burning bodies. She slowly took in all the people standing around it, studying every single person there as if looking for something in particular. I say 'looking at everyone', but she almost looked past them as if seeing something on or just past them. After everyone in the crowd had been examined she stared at the fire some more.

Suddenly her head shot up and her eyes scanned the village before locking on a building and she moved directly towards and then into it, without blinking or moving her eyes, her head keeping a slight tilt like a cat exploring a new scent. Out of the building came the unearthly scream of a ghoul, which suddenly cut off. Arkarnianna came out a few moments later dragging the corpse of a ghoul behind her. If one was observant one might notice the corpse of the ghoul had no wound, stranger yet it seemed as though the ghoul had just returned to being just a normal dead body. as though any magic had been removed from it. She proceeded to throw the corpse on the fire.

"I am looking for the necromancer, and will be joining the group that will be hunting him down" she announced, from her tone there could't be any other option.

Saul chuckled as the girl stepped out of the building, his sword stabbed into the ground as he rested for a moment. The other Templar were busy cutting down the other bodies, though they glanced over towards the new person. None of them seemed particularly concerned. "Sure."

He offered, his voice obscured by the helmet.

"As soon as you grow by about five years." The Templar Commander said as he picked up his sword and wiped the blade off on the edges of his robe. Ghoul blood wouldn't etch steel like some monsters, but it could be rather annoying to draw a sword when it was stuck in the scabbard.

He shifted slightly, turning away from the girl.

"I'm not in the habit of using child soldiers." None of the Templar were. Sure Recruits were trained at a young age, but they didn't go out into the field until they were well over eighteen. He glanced at the corpse. "Even if they're mages."

Not to mention, Saul wasn't about to let an unknown simply walk into his group.

That would be stupid.

Voraak saw some more figures enter this blazing scene. The center of the village was becoming a gathering spot; no doubt a defensive point for soldiers.

Before the dark mage could ponder any more on the situation, his flying messenger came back from its flight and communicated to him that it was Paladins...hunting for the Necromancer, seeking to kill them.

Paladins eh? They would foil my attempts at learning. I cannot face them, not alone and not in my state. I must keep to the shadows and see where this....entourage ends up He thought.

Keeping to the ridgeline Voraak edged down to the village and kept his ears open. Surely he would end up being discovered by these Paladins one way or another. He would have to be on his toes every step of the way.

Without knowing where this Necromancer would be, he would have to tail the small battalion of soldiers in hopes to get his hands on magickal artifacts and perhaps effects of the Necromancer themselves. Creeping in the burned down remains of a tavern, the dark mage peeked through the timber debris to see what this group was up to. A young female was in the midst of this chaos.

What's a little girl doing here? He reflected. Voraak cared not of where the girl came from or what she was doing here. Being a potential witness to his schemes, every angle needed to be watched. The raven messenger would get more use this day.

Saul Talith Arkarnianna

Arkarnianna looked at the templar, head tilted, just staring for a few seconds, examining him, taking all she could get off him.

"You seem to be very confused on multiple points. I do not have time to educate you. Especially if you plan to of no use to me, but on the off chance you will see your mistake as well as see reason, I should try." Her voice sounded almost mechanical, the only emotion coming through being a frustration with having to waste time.

"I am no longer a child or a girl, all that remains is only a tool. A tool that exists purely for The College. The College wishes for all who practise dark magic as well as sully their Great name to be retired, and their will shall be done. You are not of The College so you have no say in anything. I just needed to know if you would comply." She showed contempt that she could be seen as anything other than a tool for her masters, and more at the fact that these fools wouldn't do everything in their power to help The College.

"I am also no mage, nor do I have any intent of joining you organization, and following your rules. No I intended to use you to take out the necromancer as efficiently as possible. Indeed I misspoke by saying that I'd 'be joining the group that will be hunting him down', I was trying to avoid stepping on any toes, what was ment was: You are all be helping me on the holy quest of enacting The Colleges will upon this necromancer." After staring into the templars helmet for another second finished with, "Going against The Colleges will, now that is stupid!" She spat at the idea.

"If you will not help me though so be it, I have fed as well as have tasted his scent, I will find him soon enough." She turned and began to leave, after going seven paces she stopped suddenly and spun around looking up, she stared at a bird for a second, and began squinting at it, releasing it was futile she shook her head. She knew there was some magic on it, but could only tell that it wasn't the necromancers, and the spell wasn't itself necromancy. Maybe it belonged to a templar or one of their companions, she cared not she had a job to do.

Saul could practically feel his men tense at the mere mention of Elbion.

Though the Broken Sword was tolerant of mages, they were most certainly not accepting. Many of the Templar of his Sect held the opinion that any mage, any at all, should be strung up and hung from the nearest tree. One couldn't really argue the fact, and this little girl was evidence of that.

They turned her into a weapon? Disgusting.

A human being, broken and twisted until she thought so little of herself that she would chase a necromancer. Shame really, that she had become a monster simply because of the wills of some Sorcerer in his high tower. His fingers curled slightly, his gaze wandering over to Berrick who seemed to have the exact thoughts as him.

The man slowly wandered over to Saul, his head leaning in to whisper something.

"Perhaps we should kill her. She's clearly been changed and you know what the Lord Captain sa-"

Saul shook his head. "We're not here for that."

The Commander saw an opportunity here, and there was no pain that came from it. Sometimes you just had to take advantage of others, no matter the road that it lead you down.

"The College has no authority here." Simple truth. Elbion was thousands of leagues away. "Run along now. Lest you get yourself killed."

Saul goaded the creature, hand on his sword hilt.

The banter between the young female and a Paladin figure escalated his adrenaline. A tall Paladin with an interesting helmet obscured any facial exposure and he assumed this was the leader...no denying it.

Hmmm...he must be the authority figure here. I guess I will have to rely on my beguiling to make it through this ordeal he thought.

Taking his small dagger out of the sheath he made minor cuts on his face and quietly showered himself with chalky debris that was lying about the smoldering tavern. Voraak unfurled his hood to look more presentable given the situation.

Holding his ribcage he staggered outside hacking like a plagued man.

"COUGH COUGH......Oh thank the gods.....I thought I was done for....What's going on here? I remember screaming and then I must have gotten knocked out when the tavern fell"

Voraak did his best to look presentable to the group that was scouring the village.

"My wife! Where is she? Were there any survivors?!"

He pleaded the group in front of him to give him some answers. With any luck he would get closer to the Necromancer, he just needed to act his part.

"The College has no authority here."
"You're right, The Colleges authority does not reach here, and the world is all the worse for it. But when one can not reach something they use a tool, and as I have made known to you I am that tool. I am the spear that is thrust forth to eliminate all that would sully the great name of The College. Though I know not if this necromancer originated from Elbion, my mission does not change, for using dark magic anywhere only sullies The Colleges name, causing people to fear what they should openly embrace, and embrace it they should so that they to can feel the love The College has shown me, though I don't have ability to call forth magic."

She spoke with the passion of a preacher, and talked to them as though they were children she was trying to teach about the glory of god. To say she was zealous would be an understatement. She was a fanatic by ever definition of the word. It seemed as though teaching about the glories of The College was nothing new to her, nor hunting down a necromancer. One could say it seemed as though she'd spent her entire life devoted to slaying the monsters of the world and killing those mages who cross a line that they should not have. Doing so with a fanatic zeal. (Did that ring any bells?)

Arkarnia began to leave again, she had wasted enough time as it was. She only turned again when a voice called out.
Looking at the man she knew him to be a magic user, there also seemed to be a darkness on him as though he'd been tied to some darker magic in the past. I she found him in the future she'd want to investigate this further, but for now she had wasted enough time on these templars, she gave a sly smile as she looked between the tattered man and the templar then turned to leave again, but before she did she had one last jab to make.
"My wife! Where is she? Were there any survivors?!"
"I don't know, tell me mister templar were there any survivors?" Her smile grew, a cat playing with a toy "I'll let you decide Mr. Templar, besides better safe than sorry, especially with that damned Necromancer running around." She cackled as she walked away so sure she had the templar figured out, because if you actively chose to go against The College, well you must be the worst kind of monster.

Arguing that the College of Elbion was the greatest thing since sliced chicken to a band of Templars was like arguing that air was the best thing ever to a fish.

None of them particularly liked magic. They tolerated mages, true, but only barely. Most of his men thought that the College of Elbion wasn't much better than a Necromancer school, and his fellow Commanders back in Alliria were of the opinion that they all should have been wiped out.

Saul was a tad more liberal of course, but...well only barely. He didn't exactly like mages either.

When the man came out screaming, his voice shrill and panicked Saul couldn't help but whirl around and draw his sword. In an instant the blade rang free, pulling from his scabbard and swiping forward towards the man. The other twelve Templar did the same, on instant alert as the man screamed.

A heartbeat passed, and then he saw the man for the whimpering mess he was.

The Commander frowned slightly, relaxing for just a breath. "No."

His blade lowered slightly, though he did not put it back into it's scabbard. The other Templar followed suit, though it was clear that each and every one of them was ready for a fight.

"No survivors." His voice was on the edge of suspicion as he spoke.

As Voraak was spilling his performance to this audience he felt a piercing gaze come to him. It was from that girl. Unaware of her true nature or her purpose, he wondered if she could see through his guise?

"Oh gods.....NO! My Beatrice.....Who....Who did this?!" He scolded. Voraak knew that this was the power of the Necromancer but he wondered if this lot knew the same. Besides, he had to make his performance semi-believable.

Once the female mentioned the Necromancer he knew he was in the right group. They could lead him to the Necromancer and he would salvage any remaining research. The price of knowledge was not free. He would have to assist the group or he would have to sneak his way behind them. The lead Paladin was very terse and blunt with his words.

"A....necromancer? The bastard! They took my wife from me.....they need to pay!"

He hoped that he would be able to offer his sword to avenge 'his wife'. Before he could ponder further on his plans he looked back at the mysterious female and remarked to her.

"Young one! It is much too dangerous to stay around here. You should find safety and shelter!"
The gaze she gave him earlier was enough to disturb him and she could potentially foil his plans. Anything could go wrong today.

Working up a sob, tears started streaming down his face and he fell to the drying mud, almost whimpering like a lost dog.
"I need to kill them....or see them killed...please let me see them perish. I have nothing left."

As he opened his eyes he stared at the ground, trying to look beyond it as he was in a trance--a mad fit. He was crying not for his 'wife' but to get closer to this Necromancer.

Saul Talith | Arkarnianna

Many self-proclaimed summoners of the undead walked the lands of Arethil, but few among them had any real power. Rumors spread swiftly through the Spine of this Necromancer and his atrocities, drawing the interest of many, including the Sons of Fire and their Father, who stared out from within the grim citadel upon the blighted plateau.

The Four sent out Gerra and a troop of Blight Orcs to find the Necromancer and bring him back to the black fortress.

And so they came along the road, two score or more, following in the wake of the Necromancer's destruction, the stamp of their ironshod feet beating a steady tattoo upon the land. In their midst walked Gerra, hair red and skin ashen, brutish and blocky features glowering about at his surroundings with an air of imperiousness made all the more imposing by his sheer size.

The smoke of the ruined village coiled in the distance, still some ways away.

The last corpse stopped moving forward, seeming to accept its fate. Ragna's maul pulverised it, reducing it to bits of bone and flesh. The collection of undead seemed to have been a band cut loose by their controller, left to harry the road and drag down unsuspecting travellers. The dozen had been a matter of minutes for Ragna to annihilate. The hill giant had barely broken a sweat.

She made a sound of disgust at the state of the maul. The giantess stooped to examine some of them. Mere peasants, not much of value before she'd smashed them apart and strewn the remains across the road. A passerby could have been forgiven for thinking that the cause had been a rain of anvils.

She moved off the road to a stream, determined to wash the filth off her clothing and weapon. Her nose wrinkled at the stench, most of the dead had been rotting for a few days. It stank to high heaven if a barbarian giant from the Spine found the smell offensive.

Arkarnianna was disgusted with what she heard, obviously this man, though a user of magic, was not from The Collage as one from that holy place would never look so pathetic. Also had he not heard that the templars had refused to help The College? Why would anyone, especially one blessed like him, want to associate with such... vermin! The people here were cursed with not knowing any better. She almost stopped right then and there to help the poor lost lamb, but she had a wolf to hunt. After finishing her hunt she would make sure to save this little lamb from the den of vipers it had fallen into.

Arkarnianna scanned the horizon, and took many large breathes trying to get a hint of the necromancers magic, and pin point where he was. Having already fed off his magic she already knew what she was looking for. Hunting necromancers was always made easier by thier tendency to leave behind their servants to cause chaos, it was a lot easier to track one by their magic from an active spell than a charred crater. Eventually she got a trace of his magic, but it was enough she began walking away from the village heading in the general direction the trace came from.

As she left though there was another smell that began to grow stronger, beginning to choke her, a strong smell of ashe, brimstone, and sulphur. This was a new smell to her, and she was terrified.

Saul stared at the blubbering man. "No..."

What the hell was it with today and random people trying to join their merry little band? Templar weren't Rangers, they didn't just let random weirdos hop on board to any mission. He didn't care if this man had seen the Necromancer revive his deaf wife right in front of his eyes.

They weren't collecting strays. The girl was a child, and this man...this man was already half dead apparently. At least on the inside. Neither were soldiers, and more important neither of them were Templar. His fingers tightened around his sword, though he flipped the blade and returned it to it's scabbard.

"We're not taking on recruits." The Commander said simply, his voice a bit more harsh than it should have been.

"If you want to join the Templar then head West to Alliria." That was where the chapter house. "Otherwise I suggest you head to the next village, lest you get yourself killed."

As was far more likely than being any help at all.

The Necromancer had managed to do all of this fairly easily, and fighting the man wouldn't be an easy task. More people would just get in their way, something that they didn't exactly need right now.

Playing into the scene a little more, Voraak shook his head in disagreement but then wiped his fake tears away.
"Fine....just...kill the bastard. No one else needs to fall victim to this atrocity"

Figuring this Paladin was a 'by the books' character, he estimated on tailing the group anyways. There was that young female again....was she from Elbion? From the College? Did she recognize him?

It would be best for me to remain out of sight....for now at least he pondered.
Limping out of sight, the mage would rest himself against the outer wall of a building. He held out his arm to summon his messenger once more.

Whispering to the black raven he stroked it's soft head
"Follow them young one...lead me to them. Verüss Bek Levar" He said with a smile as the raven gracefully left his arm and took to the skies to lead his master to the group.

Stubborn fool. I won't get myself killed....not on this day. Once you find the Necromancer, I shall have his artifacts.
At least he would hope that there would be something to gain. He had met only a few necromancers and they each documented their notes as Necromancy was a difficult art to master.

While the raven would be perching on trees and monitoring the Paladin's progress, Voraak would be meditating and biding his time. Scanning the hills around the village he did not see any other people passing by....not yet. Time would be against him.

Faurosk had been travelling East from the Allirian College of the Elemental Arcane, seeking a mentor who was said to live along the winding roads near The Spine's tallest peaks. The journey thus far was uneventful to say the least, as there was no company for the young wizard save the scenic beauty that seemed to enrapture the fertile farmlands of the Allir Reaches.

According to a map he'd made certain to purchase before embarking on this most recent of his quests, Faurosk would be approaching a farming village just as the sun reached its apex, giving him enough time to find a place to bunk up for the night and make back some of the funds he had lost on his recent travels. Just as he crested the last hill before his idyllic destination would have come into sight, however, his nose is assaulted by the scents of death and burning bodies. It's a wonder he didn't see the smoke sooner, as the village lied strewn and wracked across the plains before him. After a cursory look across the expanse, he determined that most of the 'excitement' must have already passed.

Without another moment's hesitation, he set out to the village below, soon coming across the the Templars responsible for clearing the ghouls mere minutes after they had dismissed Voraak and Arkarnianna.

"Ho, there!" he exclaimed, roughly ten meters from where the soldiers had collected. "You're Templars from Alliria, no? Might I inquire as to just what happened here?"

”Oh fucks sake!” Saul called out as he rounded on the new person and very nearly drew his sword until he saw they were just a regular person.

His nerves were on edge now.

This was the third person that had crept up on them while they were just sitting in this town, and every single minute they wasted that damned Necromancer was getting further and further away. The thought made his chest ache, and he was barely sociable at the best of times. A sigh escaped him and his fingers tightened on the hilt of his blade. He had to fight the urge to just shout and start chasing people away.

”What is it disturb the Templar day?” He grumbled quietly to himself and then turned to the new person. ”Necromancer.”

Saul knew that he should have been nicer, knew that it was important to put up a good face for the Templar. It was just that he was growing...exasperated with the situation. All that he wanted was to do the work his Chapter was meant to do; kill the damned necromancer.

He sighed and then spoke again. ”Carving a path through the local villages. He's nearby somewhere.”

Likely to the north now.

Faurosk shot an eyebrow up at the mention of necromancy, ignoring the Templar's rude behavior if only for the time being. Slaying a city of the dead was sure to put anyone on edge, after all. So he stood- evidently unarmed save for the quarterstaff stored across his pack and wearing nothing more protective then his robe -and addressed Saul.

"Seems a terribly powerful necromancer, then, to do all this." His head turned to the remaining crosses, addressing what individuals remained bound up with a small nod. "A shame, to be sure, but I'm certainly glad you've all arrived to address the situation."

"The air is oppressive with the magic that bound these creatures here."
He looked back to the soldiers as he spoke, folding his hands at his front. "I would suppose you have it handled from here, sir? Not unless a magician would be of any help in purging this miasma from the countryside, that is."

Voraak sat idly waiting for the group of Paladins to proceed to their target. Keeping an eye on his raven he moved forward a few more buildings, almost within range of hearing any conversation.

I could cast some illusion spells and creep them out even more
he joked.

That would waste his energy as he would need it when they would face the Necromancer. If they survive that is.

A new voice caught his attention. They sounded around his age and his dialect….scholarly like or he was a well-versed merchant.

“Appened here?”

Hmmm I must have just missed our guest Voraak pondered.

Keeping his ears open, he could comprehend that the lead Templar was an angry fellow. Much to his enjoyment, Voraak entertained the idea of making the others envision the dead coming to ambush them.

He hesitated furthermore and focused on the task at hand. He missed the conversation that was had but he caught the tail end of what the Paladin had to say.

“He’s nearby somewhere”

Oh good. Please, lead me to my quarry fair Paladin he thought cynically.

The raven looked down at its master to signal that there was nothing else going on. The blood on his face was dried by now as Voraak took a stone from his pouch and glided it through his fingers. A perfectly smooth stone that was the color of the darkest night.

His treasure was closer than he realized and his mouth was nearly drooling at the mere thought of finding the Necromancer’s studies.

I can wait….I am a patient man he said to himself.

In the distance, those within the village might hear the stomp of many ironshod feet and shouted orders in a harsh and guttural tongue. The furor came from the south, along the road as the warband drew nearer.

Arkarnianna had not noticed the new man, who now spoke with the templar. She had even forgotten about the necromancer scourge of the earth though he was. No, all that filled her being was this new smell. The smell of brimstone. She smelt a creature that had been born of brimstone and fire, a creature that smelt as though it was fused with magic. She had been slowly backing up as it drew closer. She knew not if she should bow down and begin worshiping such an entity or to try to destroy it as an abomination, or to follow her every instinct not planted in her by the college and run.

AS she backed up eventually she tripped over some rubble and fell, she proceeded to crawl behind a stone and peer over it, praying desperately for The College to give her an answer.

The sound and clamour reached even Ragna in the river. She froze, her ears pricking up. She left the water as stealthily as a beast her size could manage. Sodden from the river, it had done something to cleanse her of the stench of rotting flesh. She gripped her maul warily, moving in a half crouch into the trees. Her ears and eyes scanned ahead of her for any threat.

"We're Templar." He was getting rather tired of explaining this to everyone that passed through. They didn't need or want mages helping them out, in fact he was pretty sure that one or two of his men would tell him that they needed to capture this mage in case he was helping the Necromancer.

Saul doubted that he was, generally speaking the Commander was a fairly good judge of character, but he couldn't help but feel this was all chalking up to be more than a coincidence. Though there was no real proof of that of course. "We don't need he-"

Suddenly Saul found his words cut off

"Sir!"

Someone called out to him, a Templar who had been standing at the edge of the village pulling off his helmet and listening to something beyond on the road. A frown touched Saul's lips, and he glanced over towards the man with a face of curiosity. Though it was obviously still hidden behind his helmet. "What's wrong?"

"I'm not sure...there's...something coming, sounds like marching, armed men"

For Kiva's sake. What now? Saul thought, his lips thinning as he turned towards the people gathered in the village.

"Take up position in the rubble." What sort of armed men would be here? The Commander turned and regarded the mage. "Come with me."

No point in sending him away, not with whatever over that ridge coming.

Faurosk | Arkarnianna | Gerra | Ragna | Voraak Tyrethian

Voraak listened intently on the conversation as best as he could. He didn't think anyone knew he was here which would work in his advantage. His scout of a raven looked down on it's master a second time and cawed, alerting him of a potential threat looming nearby.

That smell

He thought. Brimstone and fire. What was it though? The Paladins seemed to be taking a defensive approach in the village, which means that it could be a potential enemy coming to aid the Necromancer or to steal the research.

I'll perish before anyone else gets their hands on that research before me

Squinting his icy blue eyes he scanned the hills and didn't see anything but he heard quite a bit. Thudding of ground, the clanging of boots and armor. Guttural language could be heard, not a tongue Voraak was too familiar with.
Holding the black stone in his hand he clenched it and used his energy to scrye into the mind of his raven.

Orcs....a whole damned legion.

At any rate, Voraak would surely be discovered in the crossfire. Hunched over in the debris of a townhouse. If he had to fight, he would have to do it on the outskirts of town, where others would not notice him. If all else fails he could wait it out in the townhouse and await the victor to lead him to the Necromancer.

Unsheathing his sword, pale blue runes would glow down the blade in a pulsating manner as he murmured an unknown incantation with his lips. Blood would be shed this day, in some form.

The dark scholar pocketed his precious black stone and moved to a different building to await a potential ambush.
