Open Chronicles Swarm - The Birth of a Race

A roleplay open for anyone to join
Scabbers listened to her instructions, the pair returning to him and feasting as he took note of the new roots that broke the surface. Pools for material to be placed in. No more having to travel all the way back to the center to leave it there. His small group assembled and fed, Scabbers and his ilk had followed hot on the heels of the wolves, letting them take the lead well ahead of the altered goblins.

The lot were anxious to fight. To find something else to scratch and claw, to bite and bring down. A few final snarls had them orderly once more as they sat silently against the cover of the woods. The color of their skin helping them blend into the shadows of the plant life around them. They watched, this time with their own eyes, to see the giant and its companions move and fight.

Cinny’s eyes slid to the newcomer, taking in his garb… A hunter, himself? Or simply a well-armed traveler who just happened to be drawn to the sound of the giant’s, ahem, hardwork? Andrea had already greeted him and asked him those very questions… even as the giant at Cinny’s side began to shift that ridiculously large slab of metal in his hands, and Cinny’s eyes flicked to the rune that had drawn Andrea’s attention.

Her stomach twisted inside of her, and she shifted her cloak back in order to take hold of her knife. It wasn’t much, but…

She really didn’t want to let the ‘other one’ out right now.

“Well,” she said, loudly and perhaps with a forced chipper-ness. “Jair, our new friend… What say you both to quickly and efficiently moving upriver to the village in question?” She gestured with the hand that didn’t have hold of her dagger, in the direction of the village. “I humbly suggest we move quickly, as it seems we might even be surrounded at this point….” Despite her words, there was an urgency to her tone that was unmistakable. If it was more of those wolf-creatures that could be… problematic.

Quite problematic.

“This way,” she directed, along what remained of the path near the riverbank, leading further through the densely wooded area towards the village of Kito in the distance.

Skulking about? How rude.

Draedamyr was listening whilst he inspected one of the bloody forms. It had been well and truly crushed by the giant. It made it difficult to identify, but no more than a cursory look told him that it was no creature he had met. He couldn't feel much of a trace of magic coming from it. Draedamyr would have expected to feel something from a summoned beast.

Surrounded? His two guides were still some distance behind him. He hadn't heard a cry. Turning his head from side to side he tried to block out the sounds of the others moving.

Reverie was drawn from its sheath. The blade held low but ready with no sign of whatever was closing on them. Things were moving through the undergrowth quickly.

"We might nees ground we can defend!" he called as he followed after the others. The giant would need room and would likely make his own. The rest of them however could do with something defensible if they were outnumbered.

The Giant looked over to the direction the trio wanted to retreat. "If we're surrounded, than let me make a hole. Yall might wanna get behind me." The giant said before he started swinging his anchor horizontally, building up speed. He had to concentrate, he didn't want the ajax wave to spread around him. He wanted a line, A LINE he worked the shape in his mind, he grabbed the rope of he meteor hammer with both hands, and gave a fast storm from above slam into the ground, the rune on his arm glowed, a yellow brown glow of eldritch energy ran from his hands, through the rope, and was released in a combination of eldritch, and kinetic energy was released in the pound.

The Ajax wave was not a straight line, but was near enough, it was more of a wedge, and it was not near as over the top as the last one he conjured. The wave radiated out in a wedge from where the anchor connected with the ground, in the direction of the means of retreat. The wave seemed to build up steam as it rolled forward in a large swell, at about two feet the swell broke over in a crashing wave of dirt uprooting saplings. Small in comparison to the crater he made the last time. Exit stage left so to speak.

The Hounds were not idle. When the giants wave attack detonated the earth in front of him the hounds leapt back a considerable distance to get out of range, the memories of the fallen hounds before them still kept in the swarm.
There was a deafening scream coming from multiple throats that ground on the nerves of any who heard, and if magical precautions were not in place, or resistances were not a factor, terror would enter the hearts of their prey.

At the point of impact the hounds to their left and right flank darted forward to attempt a hamstring tactic, but weren't committed to the distraction attack and leapt back as soon as they could before they could get caught alone in combat.

As soon as the earth settled in front of the groups intended exit point the hounds darted forward from the front to again block their path, initially lunging at the giant to panic him a moment before he could pull in his weapon again, but they were not committed to this attack either and it was merely a feint which they would quickly jump away from merely to catch him off guard.
The other Swarm Hounds broke cover as well and now all thirteen of them circled the group, waiting for one of their victims to dare turn their back on the pack for even a moment.
The pack merely circled for now, occasionally feinting as a distraction for another feint which could mask another attack and keep the group on edge, but for the most part the hounds kept their distance, if a hound was able to draw blood it would embolden the rest of the pack and the circle would close a little more.

The Swarm Hounds were working more efficiently than a normal wolf pack, each one knew exactly what the others were doing and they were able to seamlessly plan and coordinate feinting strategies that were designed to draw only a little bit of blood at a time as they circled the party in a slow walk, crouched threateningly as their boney hide dissuaded attacks that would threaten their back, neck or heads and their abnormally large and sharp claws scraped deep rivets in the soft turf.
The pack was in its most dangerous formation, but they took their time.

Meanwhile Havilah was making her way through the tunnels to the surface and the ruins of The Forbidden City.
She had done much work from her lair, but now she was tired of that place and intended to move her base of operations, and with the new creatures she's created she deemed that it was now time for the Swarm to establish its presence officially in the above world.

She was followed by hundreds of Swarm Hounds.
Also in her train were many large creatures that walked on four clawed limbs and sported huge thick carapaces, they had mouths lined with rows of teeth and large mandibles for tearing prey apart. They were called Swarm Devourers. And Havilah had attached hundreds of new chrysalis to each one as they made their journey.

A path had been cleared for them in the trees... but was quickly cut off once more by these monstrous hounds. Their howl was ear splitting, and Andrea could feel the pressure they placed on her wards. That detail did not go unnoticed. It meant their very howl was not just for communication... it was a weapon.

The mage drew her spellblade from it's sheath. "Cinny, this is not going to be pretty. Stay where I can defend you and get ready to run." The first spell she cast was to light the blade on fire, and then point it at the ground. With a sweeping motion of her blade, she drew a line in the earth. And 10 feet away from them, flames erupted from the ground to defend their flank. One less angle they would have to worry about the wolves and their constant circling.

Her next defense, however, was a little more subtle, but something she expected the wolves would fall for rather easily. Drawing a quick rune into the air with her blade, she thrust the tip of her blade into the ground again. Several additional runes filled the field between them and the wolves, creating a nasty surprise for any wolf that had the misfortune of activating her trap. Large, deadly spikes waited to rise up and impale any creature in their path. Suddenly, even their feints go much more hazardous for them.

"Jair, I'm giving you an opening, just keep them at bay."

The howls rippled through the air, straining at the few wards that Cinny wore and making the rune on her skin itch with its heat; her heart began to hammer in her chest as adrenaline flooded through her and she could feel it -- that tingling at the edges of her fingertips, the pain coursing along her backbone. The change was threatening to sweep over her, rankling at the edges of her senses and clawing at that rage burning in the pit of her stomach…

No. Not right now. Not without the others knowing, it’d be too dangerous for them. She drew her breath in through her nose, counting to ten, then exhaled through gritted teeth, again to ten. Reaching up, she flattened her hand against the rune etched into her chest over her heart, feeling the weight of it against her like her chest as if it was a physical object. Mutely, she nodded in acknowledgement to Andrea’s words. She had to trust that Andrea would be able to protect her, or at least get the others far enough away from Cinny that they wouldn’t be harmed.

Pale and trembling, she kept behind Andrea, one hand pressed to her chest, the other gripping her dagger. It’d be easy for someone to look at her and see the fear on her face and misinterpret it… but she kept her wits around her, crimson eyes darting between the monstrous wolves flanking them.

The hounds didn't break the circle, they danced away from the flames at first but very un-wolf-like they didn't flee at the threat of fire, the fire couldn't keep them at bay or break their circle.
But what was most surprising was that even though the flames were magical in nature the hounds were able to walk through them with only some singed fur that wasn't covered by Chitin, but as a whole they didn't seem to mind the flames at all.

The wolves who blocked the front of the group continued their tactics. They focused mostly on the giant, trying their best to feint him out and get in one good bite. As soon as they they see that huge weapon begin to spin they would press forward to interrupt the attack and prevent another widespread strike.

The next challenge came from the second spell the hunter had cast. Two hounds prepared for a coordinated feint when they made the misstep on the trap spots, as quick as an arrow a stone spike shot up from the earth, the hounds heads could not move fast enough to avoid the trap from below and the spike found a soft spot under the hounds jaw and drove through the smaller bones on the underside of the skull, the hounds died with a spike through their brains, but the spike could not penetrate the roof of the skull of either monster.

Down the eleven of their number the Swarm Hounds did not stop their circle but the flank paused their attacks to analyze the events to explain what happened to their comrade. A quick sniff told the hounds that magic was used, and in their collective memory they saw the human huntress cast the two spells and remembered the appearance of lights from the runes at several points on the ground between them and their prey.

Their own intelligence could not have comprehended this and seen a solution. As a collective mind with each other they are already more intelligent than a normal wolf pack, but intelligence beyond themselves, and even beyond Havilah, allowed the wolves to adapt to this new threat.

The hounds increased the pace of their circling strategy, the constant movement making it difficult to track where they were. Standing back to back their prey had a pretty good chance, especially with the giant able to cover the front with just his size alone, but the hounds were making it as difficult as possible for the giant to use his swinging weapon and were doing the best they could to not get caught up in direct combat with any of them.

As the circle closed the wolves would move faster, some of them triggered the spike traps, but being able to remember where they were they were able to avoid the spikes just enough to take the blow on their chitin shell. Another wolf died by the traps when a stone spike broke through a weak point in it's chitin and left the hound impaled on its side, but the swarm continued to move as they set off the traps one by one instead of trying to avoid them.

The hounds were not silent, they began clicking their mandibles loudly and the sound was like the sharp snap of a sword breaking, they created this sound as a defense against spells that required focus, disrupting spells already cast that required focus to keep functioning.

Havilah made it to the surface at last, and now it was time to work.
The swarms of hounds spread out through the ruins and began collecting materials, both genetic and construction based.
The Swarm Devourers began moving about the area and a green ichor gushed from their mouths which they spread all over the area.

Havilah selected a green glowing seed and placed it on the slime covered broken stone area that was originally a town square. Once placed it was as if it reacted violently with the ground, it sprouted roots that gripped and shattered the stone as it burrowed down quickly into the soil, fed and nurtured by the slime it grew and grew, shattering stone and breaking the area until it sprouted up and became a massive ichor pool with which she could work to create genetic sequences and adaptations to the swarm.

The Swarm hounds returned with genetic material as well as large stone and other things for construction and building.
The devourers unloaded their cargo of chrysalis, placing them in and around the ichor pool. Then they began taking the collected building material and covering them with slime, they began placing and shaping the materials, building a large construct for the new base on the surface, as if they were bees building a giant hive. The construction would take a while, but even with the wind picking up and a dust storm rolling in on The Forbidden City, they had time.

While the swarm worked Havilah selected a tiny chrysalis, inside she could see the formed shape of a bulbous insect, a little creation of hers called a Swarm Carrier, that would once again revolutionize evolution for the swarm. She placed the chrysalis on the ground. Once the ground was covered with slime from the workers, but now the slime has hardened into a hard shell like substance that was similar in function to a coral reef, it provided the ideal environment and sustenance for creatures of the swarm.
She attached the chrysalis to the ground and stood up, she lifted her hand at the small chrysalis and her hand began to glow green, something like slime came from the green glow and covered the chrysalis, making it glow green as well. She waited a moment before it took effect, the little bug inside the chrysalis began to split, and another complete insect was formed, it then split off from that chrysalis to form its own chrysalis, and the process repeated itself... hundreds of times... created hundreds of new chrysalis with these tiny insects, their combined chrysalis forming huge clusters.

Havilah turned from these clusters, they would continue to reproduce themselves without her guidance and she turned her attention to her other work as walls formed of rock, building matter and the coral substance quickly rose about her. Even as she worked the sun was gradually closed off and she was now inside a dome where creatures of the swarm can be created and birthed.

figFear, yes giants felt fear too, especially magically induced fear like which had began screaming in his head. Jair was trained in head spaces, compartmentalizing certain parts of his mind mostly for the execution of magical spells. Each head space using a different language, Jair had a total of three at the moment. He took time to start building a wall of head space, putting all the fear, all the panic behind it where it could scream, and flail at the mere thought of these dogs, and their magically infused howelling.

"Ég mun reyna mitt besta!"
I will try my best
the Giant roared in his native tongue. The headspace he walled up was in the common tongue. "Ég get ekki notað galdra mína."
I can't use my magic.
he announced.

He reached down, and made use of the opening. People tend to forget about projectiles arrows, thrown knives, sling ammo, after they have passed their intended target. Jair stooped over smiling grabbing a firm hold of the end of the rope that was attached to the end of the meteor hammer. He rose, and in one smooth motion ripped the anchor from is sitting position, which was behind the dogs after they closed in. The rope made a loud ~popping~ noise as it went from slack to banjo string tight hopefully tripping, or tossing some of the dogs, then the anchor began to gain speed digging a pair of two foot deep furrows in the ground scattering saplings, and raking the a swath through the creatures.

"Berjast þá hart!"
Fight them hard
the giant encouraged.

(ooc: Sorry I was waiting on Draedamyr)

Draedamyr had fought creatures summoned by a mage before. The human in question had pulled a crocotta out of the aether. These didn't feel like any summoned creatures he had seen before. Perhaps alchemy or the experimentation of a wild mage. Regardless, it had been left unchecked for too long.

A shield and a spear would have been the best tools for the escape. His spear had been with the two guide who he suspected had been eaten by now. The first hound that broke in his direction received a crossbow bolt between the eyes. With the fletchings emerging from the middle of its forehead, the hound collapsed to the ground like a hearth rug.

The hounds were circling, testing, looking for weakness. Draedamyr was halfway through reloading his crossbow when the next one came for him. His sword sung as it cut through the air, forcing the hound back. It darted away from the sliver of metal.

Trying to think through the loud gnashing of their jaws was proving difficult on its own. Draedamyr doubted he would get the chance to reload his crossbow and using his sword brought him far too close to the hounds. There simply didn't seem to be a tactic available beyond holding his own and hoping the giant stomped on them all before they dragged it down.

The hounds were prepared for an attack, but their initial attempt to put the giant off balance before his second attack was foiled by his swift action. Three more hounds fell to his anchor, but the other two hounds were able to press forward close enough to escape the AOE of the weapon. They took advantage of their proximity and his unwieldy weapon to both leap onto his right leg and sink their teeth deep into the meat of his calves, attempting to twist and pull efficiently to remove some mouthfuls of flesh.

The other hounds didn't stop their motion or disruption. They continued to close the circle but they didn't seem in too much of a hurry to engage needlessly. Only seven of the hounds remained but they didn't seem perturbed by this. The giant seemed to be the focus of their efforts. and the other hounds were watching closely, making sure the other humanoids were too preoccupied with their own safety to aid the giant.

The new hive was completed, but the creatures continued to work, adding more and more to the already extensive maze of rooms and tunnels expanding in all directions. Havilah was working hard as well, but she was perfecting her new broods. The tiny bugs she created were ready and were already hatching in the hundreds.

She had been observing the tactics of the humans through the eyes of the hounds and had prepared new adaptations for use in the swarm. There was the question of how to get these adaptations to the hounds in the field, but this is what she was working on and why the swarm of insects were created. The flying bugs swarmed over the black ichor pits and began syringing the genetic adaptations into their fat abdomens. Then with their stingers full they left the hive in a buzzing explosion to deliver the adaptations to the creatures away from The Forbidden City.

Havilah was confident in the abilities of Scabbers, but she was excited to see what the altered goblins were capable of in combat with more intelligent foes than animals and magma worms.
She looked in her genetic pit, in the black ichor she could see reflection in the glowing fungus of the hive walls. Her face was almost human... but unearthly so when her glowing eyes met themselves in the reflection. When she opens her mouth one could see normal teeth, but when she chose her mandibles would unfold from the sides of her mouth and her tongue would extend in a very long and extremely sharp stinger. She shifted her arms from under her 'cloak', four arms, each set of two adapted for a different function. And her 'cloak' would unfold from around her body to reveal four beautiful moth like gossamer wings. Everything about her was created with a function, she was especially designed by the swarm to be the perfect brood shaper, genetic weaver, thread mistress... Her humanity was left far behind.
