Private Tales Raindrops on Roses

A private roleplay only for those invited by the first writer
Tabitha was trying very hard to stay focused on what she was doing. It was more difficult than she expected. She kept her eyes glued on his arm, examined the still healing flesh. She was trying to stop the romanticized thoughts running wild in her head. Her cheeks were still flushed, but she was determined. "Hmm"

He spoke and her eyes flicked up to his briefly. "It's stabbing well, I don't see any infection. I'm not happy with how slowly it is healing, and I suggest you rest it more. I'm obviously no doctor, this is just what I know of wounds." She averted her gaze to the floor and gently released his arm. "I'll go back and sit. You should try and wash it with the soap and water, gently."

He knew that she didn't mean it as an accusation, but nonetheless felt a little defensive about what she was saying.

"I'm trying to rest it," he said. "Alas that I could rest more before I begin training tomorrow, but I cannot. I will simply have to rebandage it and work through the pain, and hope it heals nonetheless... At least it is not my sword-arm."

He gently wrested his arm back from her as she released it.

"Tabitha, I..." he started to say, giving her a longing look as his heart skipped a beat. "Do not worry for me. I will return to you, to my castle, and so long as I live, my life will be for this House, and my father's will before me... So long as you and others like you support me, I think I can do no wrong. So... please wait for me? As a favor?"

He gave her a smile, at last, his cheeks tinged with red.

Tabitha frowned as he spoke. She knew he had a lot on his plate, but sometimes taking care of yourself had to come first. He certainly could have delegated tasks to Landis or herself. He was just plain stubborn. She wasn't about to argue with him though, that wouldn't end well for her. "I cant help you wrap it either, unfortunately." She raised her own bruised hand and winced. "Quite the pair, aren't we?" She laughed softly.

She sobered as a serious look crossed his face, and she braced herself for what he had to say. It wasn't what he had expected at all. It was sweet, and touching. It made her heart flutter, and her stomach do flips again. "I will wait for you, I will be patient. I know this is what you must do, and I know this if for your estate. It was selfish of me to speak the way I did. I will always support you, and I know everyone else does too."

She was tempted again by his words, his face, his lips. It was best that she step back, and so she did. She gave him a smile, though it was tinged with sadness. "I feel like I can speak freely with you, so I admit, sometimes I forget my place." What he had said earlier was still fresh, though his words just now had dulled the edge substantially.

Llewen sighed, slipping back into the tub again as she walked away. It had been quite the exhausting day indeed. But the water was starting to lose its temperature, and he'd soaked for long enough, so he stood and started to actually wash himself, working with a quick pace.

"No, Tabitha," he said, scrubbing himself. "It is fine that you are so open with me. I.. prefer that. Honesty is a rarity in most situations like ours, and besides... I feel like you understand me better than most. Perhaps there is much a maid and a knight have in common after all. I do not quite know the extent of your own loss, only the vague details you have given me, but..." He dunked himself to rinse off. "Perhaps it was fate that brought us together, or rotten luck, but I am nonetheless happy that you are here, and I look forward to many nights together like this, if it pleases you."

He quickly washed his hair, preparing himself to get out of the tub.

Tabitha settled back on to the stool, humming quietly as she waited for him to finish. It was intimate to spend time with him like this, there was no real reason for her to be there. Still, she was enjoying it, despite the small hiccups. She could hear him moving about, it seemed he was ready to get out soon. She resisted the urge to turn as he spoke, a small smile on her lips. "Any time you want my company, it's yours. I find that you make me feel comfortable here, make me feel like I belong." She sighed softly and put her head in her hands. "One of these days, I will tell you everything of my dreary past. Just give me a little more time."

She knew he was bound to be curious, and she knew lying wasn't great. He was going to be upset when he learned the truth, and she didn't want to lose this closeness they had gained. She knew she had to tell him eventually, but she couldn't, not yet. She didn't want to hide things from him, but this was a chance for a new start, without prejudice on how she should act and behave. No talk about who she had to be married off to, or that she couldn't ride her horses, and spar with the boys. "I'll be glad to see you, when you come back. I'll pray for your safety, and that you always return home to us."

Once he had finished washing, he stepped out of the bath at last and started drying himself off. Finally, he wrapped a towel around himself and approached Tabitha. There were a lot of things on his mind, especially about her, but right now he decided being close to her would be enough. He felt less ashamed of himself than before, perhaps because they had both basically just bathed together, although it wasn't quite what one might suspect from that phrase.

"I am glad you feel like you belong," he said. "I know in time things will be clearer between us. But for now, it is late, and we should both retire. Care to follow me back to my quarters? I would love to change into something warm and get some much-needed rest. It's very late... I understand if you'd like to go to your bed instead, though."

He trailed off, thinking about how the castle would likely not always be this empty. He knew what he was doing might seem scandalous in any other context, but when it was just the two of them, he felt adventurous, and maybe a little mischievous, too. It was honesty, at least.

She could hear his feet on the stone as he approached her. Why did her heart start beating so quickly? She waited until he approached, not daring to look just yet. Part of it was privacy, part of it was the butterflies in her stomach. Still he was next to her, and she looked up at him for a moment before standing.

He was just in a towel, though after the tub fiasco, it was nothing she couldn't handle at this point. When he spoke she felt her face heat. In reality, he wanted to walk with her. Still her mind worked a mile a minute, maybe he meant more than that. It made her nervous, but she was also curious. It gave her more time with Llewen anyways, and that's what she wanted.

"I-um, I wouldn't mind walking with you." She was fidgeting again as her eyes met his. "It is late, but I don't mind spending more time with you before you go." There were implications in every they were doing, were the castle housing more people it would be gossip for months.

Llewen Merrick

"Great," Llewen responded. "It's settled--follow me back to my chambers. I'll be leaving early tomorrow... As early as I can, anyway." He offered her a smile before turning, presuming she would follow him. The stone felt cold to his feet, but before long he would be under the covers in his own bed, warm and asleep... it was a nice thought. He almost had a mind to ask her to bed with him, but... No, there would be far too many implications for that. And besides... his thoughts wandered far too much for something like that. And they were still so new to each other...

Still, he walked out of the room, expecting her to trail behind. "Thank you again for the help, Tabitha, and for checking my wound. I'll try not to strain it too much in training tomorrow. I need this arm... it wouldn't do to be a one-handed knight, now would it? What do you plan on doing while I'm gone, though, Tabitha?"

He put his hands behind his head as they walked, allowing the towel to hang around his waist. It was a good feeling--he felt like a real lord of the castle, at least right now... in no small part thanks to her.

Tabitha trailed after him dutifully, his smile only stunning her momentarily. "I'll get Spirit ready for you if you'd like. I could see you off, make sure you have everything you might need." He was perfectly capable, but horse duties were her job. She was already thinking of rations to pack just in case, her mind wandering to anything he might possibly need. She wasn't too far behind as they walked, but her thoughts were miles away, planning.

She was brought back as he spoke again, and she smiled at his back. "You helped me, it was only fair." She laughed softly, he was endearing himself to her more and more. She never wanted a time when he was not around, he was a torch in the dark of night for her. "Please do try and be gentle with it, I prefer you with two hands." She let out a soft "hmm" at his next question. "It'll be a surprise, you can see what I'm planning when you get home."

She wanted to get the castle cleaned up and organized better, make it more like a home instead of a place to throw your boots. She shook her head at his posture, grinning from ear to ear. Apparently she needed to boost his ego more often, make him feel important. If that's all it took, she could easily manage that. Anything to help him succeed.

"Oh, would you get Spirit ready? That would be fantastic, I'm terrible at saddling him," he said in response to her first question. This is technically what he hired her on for. "I mean uh, I am the lord of this castle, and you will prepare Spirit for me!" he said in a fake boisterous voice.

He listened closely as they made their way ever closer to his bedroom. The things she was saying had him wondering if the feeling he had, that maybe she felt something similar, or perhaps even more than what he did. She preferred him, did she? They'd only known each other a few days, but it felt like it had been much longer... perhaps it was because they had so much in common.

"A surprise?" Llewen said, turning to look at her with some incredulity on his face. "Well, I must say I'm eager to know what it is, although then it wouldn't be much of a surprise, would it? Always the cryptic one, aren't you, Tabitha? Very well, I shall have to return in once piece just for you..."

They arrived at his chambers, where the door was open.

"Give me just a moment," he said. "I need to change into something to sleep in..."

He'd go in, leaving the door open while he found some clothes in a dresser and dropped his towel, getting dressed and returning to her in a moment's time. He returned with a simple question.

"Say, Tabitha, do you ever find it particularly cold at night? I often wonder if other castles are this drafty..."

Tabitha grinned as he teased, she was happy to see him a bit more playful. He was teasing her, but she didn't mind when he did it in this manner. It was much better than the offhand comments he had made prior. "Yes Milord, as you wish Milord." She laughed, her eyes lighting up with happiness. She would cling to this closeness while she could, it was only a matter of time before it would inevitably change.

She nodded as he questioned her. "I think you'll like it, at least I hope so!" She gave him an impish grin, tilting her head at his next words. She didn't know if he was teasing again. It seemed like he was alluding to more with his offhand comment about her being cryptic. "You better come back in one piece, or you'll have to answer to Landis, and you know how he gets." She wanted to say he would have to answer to her, but that was awfully forward, and she was already too invested in his attention.

She waited as he slipped into his room to change, it didn't take him long at all. They stood face to face, her in a nightgown and him in his own night clothes. She studied him for a moment, not sure what she should do now that she was here. His question made her pause for a moment. "It does get quite cold when the sun goes down." And lonely, though she kept that to herself. "I don't remember it being that cold where I lived before. Maybe it's just less people and more space." She bit her lip and looked away as she spoke about her old home. They always had fires lit all over the place, not so much here. Not enough people to keep up on it.

There was something about the way she fidgeted so much, and now bit her lip, that Llewen felt himself overcome with something new. He knew what he was about to do was improper, for so many reasons, but it was just the two of them in the hall, and no one had to know but them. It made it a lot easier. Llewen suddenly pulled Tabitha close, holding her in a firm embrace, although he knew her frame was quite light at this point, so he tried not to hug too tightly.

"Thank you, Tabitha. I'll return for you, okay?"

It was a strange promise, perhaps too intimate, even, but this was a dangerous world and he genuinely didn't know if his trip to the capitol would be his last, or when he would really see her again. It could be days, but it could also be weeks. He didn't truly know. But he did know he wanted to see her again. So he held on to her, knowing it would be the last thing he could do before her departed, even as improper as it was... it would be an appropriate last memory of him, if something should happen. And he wanted to leave a memory like that for her.

They stood facing each other for several moments, just being in the same space. It wasn't uncomfortable, but she didn't know where to go from here. What if he asked her to stay? As his servant, he could tell her too and she would obey. Though in her heart, he knew he would never force that upon her.

It was a great surprise to her when Llewen suddenly embraced her. Tabitha stood stunned for a moment, but she wrapped her arms around him. They were locked in the embrace when he spoke, and she resisted the urge to bury her face against him.

She was loathe to break it, she had never felt such warmth, and comfort. He felt like home. Still, she was the first to break it. She smiled sadly as she looked up at him.

"You better, we need you. I need you to come back."

She leaned up and kissed his cheek softly. She looked at him again, her eyes searching his, hoping he wouldn't hold it against her. Tabitha stepped back and bit her lip again. "You had better get some sleep, you have a long day ahead of you. I'll have Spirit ready for you in the morning. " She trailed off and looked at him one more time. "Goodnight, Llewen."

She began to walk away, knowing she needed to. All she could think about was sinking back into his arms. She was confused, one moment he was Lord, the next he was a friend on even ground. She didn't know what he wanted from her, but she wanted to find out.

As Tabitha kissed his cheek, the color of his cheek blossomed into a warm, rosy red. He knew it now, for sure: this was more than her being a good subject, this was something else entirely, something that had his stomach in knots and wanting to act in new, strange ways that were foreign and entirely unfamiliar... Still, before he could respond to her affection, she was already wandering off back to her chambers. He had half a mind to follow her, but even the lack of protocol they'd already demonstrated wasn't enough for him to simply abandon all reason and pursue her in a way his body and mind were aching for.

"Goodnight, Tabitha," was all he could muster. As she left, he felt a cold overcome him that was strange and uncomfortable. Yes, he would have to return alive--that much he knew. For her, if for no other reason. He climbed into his bed after a few moments of awkwardly standing in the doorway, and his thoughts began to wander again, thinking about the nature of his estate, but also now more hopeful thoughts about Tabitha. Only time could tell with them, he supposed, but he was determined to make a bid now, eventually...

It seemed like a much longer and colder walk back to her room than normal. It took everything in her to not look back at Llewen as she left him standing in the doorway. She couldn't look him in the eye, not right now.

It was an uneventful walk, but still it dragged on. Finally she reached her chambers and closed the heavy door behind her. She let out a heavy sigh, and slid into bed. Her thoughts wandered before her eyes closed, she wondered what it would feel like to wake up with him beside her.

----

It had been three extremely long weeks since she had prepared Spirit for Llewen's departure. There hadn't been time for words before he left, and it still saddened her. She had made sure to pack him with provisions and some small comforts from home, and she hoped it would be enough for his journey.

She immediately had thrown herself into chores around the estate. She went from room to room in the castle cleaning every corner. She even washed all the sheets and stickers each room with fresh fire wood.

It had consumed a lot of her time, and it made the days go by quicker while she worried constantly for Llewen. Days turned into a week, and then two. By then she had begun on the courtyard and the stables, enlisting the help of Landis and a few of the children from the peasant families.

Every night she was exhausted, and every night the grounds looked a little better. She put a candle in the window every night while she waited for his return, a light for him to see if he came home in the dead of night. Every morning was a disappointment, but she again would throw herself into work. She looked healthier, and had gained muscle to boot.

Three weeks it had been, and no word. She hoped Llewen was alright, though she worried constantly. This morning, she has woken up and gotten dressed. She rushed to the great hall, and Landis just shook his head as she entered. Disheartened, she ate her meal and headed out to the stables.

She got Rosemary ready, just a bit and bridal. She lead her out to out to courtyard and did a slow lookover on her. She had healed very well, and it was if she had never been sick. She patted the horse gently and hugged her neck. "Are you ready for some exercise sweet girl?"

He was so eager to come home again that he could barely stay in the saddle. Atop the gray courser, Landis' horse Spirit, Llewen was finally reaching the little farms that were cropping up in his land with the help of his new help. He hated being away for so long--this was what he really needed to work on--but he knew Lady Helia needed him to be in top condition as a Paladin. The training had been harsh, and his sword and lance skills had certainly improved, as well as his horsemanship. Yet his thoughts were always of home, and of the little woman he'd left behind, and still he wondered what state things would be in when he finally returned...

Still, there was only one way to find out. He pressed onward, eager as ever, until finally he approached the gates of the castle itself, which were open. He entered into the courtyard, looking around until noticing that Rosemary was up and about, but due to the angle couldn't see Tabitha.

"Rosemary?" he asked. "What are you doing up and about?" His eyebrows raised and a quizzical look overtook his features. He put his hand on his sword--something he was more used to after the training, and something seemed awry... or, at least, so he thought.

Tabitha had been petting Rosemary before she took her for her exercise, there had never been a more spoiled horse in all of existence at this point. Rosemary let out a soft nicker and she smiled as she gave her a final pat. She froze, her hand in midair as she heard his voice. Her heart felt like it was going to beat right out of her chest. It took everything in her to not run around Rosemary and fling herself like a foolish girl right at him. She fixed her messy hair briefly, and took a deep breath.

Tabitha stepped out from behind the mare and smiled at Llewen, she held onto Rosemary like she was her lifeline. She frowned slightly noticing his hand gripping his sword. "Welcome home Soldier." The smile returned, if hesitant. She worried if he had changed, her thoughts drifting to their embrace. "I'm glad you're home, are you alright?" She resisted the urge to fawn over him like she desired. All she wanted to do was run up to him, stand on her toes and embrace him. She was drinking him in with her eyes, he was not the awkward boy he had been when he left. Though she was not the frail wisp of a girl that he would have remembered either.

The moment Tabitha stepped out from behind Rosemary, his heart melted and his hand dropped from his sword. Before he could collect himself, he was dismounting Spirit and hustling over to her, quickly wrapping her in a tight embrace.

"Tabitha... how I've missed you," he said, warmly.

He was smiling, and he felt overcome with the joy of seeing her again. He'd been away from her longer than he even knew her in the first place, but it had been a very lonely 3 weeks and seeing her again was truly a bright spot at the end of a dark passage. She was just his servant, sure, and one with a fraudulent identity, but he felt connected to her in a way he didn't with nearly anyone else, and had to pursue that feeling.

He let the hug hang for a little longer before remembering himself and pulling away. He smiled as he talked to her, his joy apparent in his eyes.

"I'm alright. I survived the training, for now, and have some time here at home again. How have you been? Has the castle treated you well in my absence? I hope you weren't too terribly lonely..."

Tabitha once again froze as he slid off of Spirit and practically ran to her. She wasn't sure what to expect, and it certainly wasn't what came next. He wrapped her in his arms, his warmth was something she truly realized she had missed. She melted into it, her arms wrapping tightly around him as she blinked back threatening tears. She had missed his presence more than she even realized. He was her budding leaves in spring, the refreshing breeze of summer, the colors of fall, and a warm fire in winter.

All to soon the embrace ended and she collected herself, a smile playing on her lips as questions rolled off his tongue. He had missed her, her. That was all she could think about, her stomach fluttering as she waited for him to breath so she could answer. He was so happy, and that made her own eyes shine with happiness. It was all that mattered.

"I've been good, I'm feeling much better than when you pulled me off the street." If he looked closely he would see curves where once was skin and bones, her hair shiny and full of luster. She was no longer a shadow of a girl, she was the woman she should have been. "You'll find the castle well, if not still on the empty side. The crops have come in really well. Almost as if overnight." She was yet unaware of her abilities, and would not realize that singing songs with the peasant children had helped the crops grow and flourish.

She quietly hoped Landis would not mention how she had longed for Llewen to come home, especially the candle bit. She would be filled with embarassment if Llewen found out how she had pined for his company. "I made myself busy while you were away, hopefully you'll see the result of it soon." She grinned impishly, very proud of the work she had done. "I'm just glad you're back, it hasn't felt like home without you here bossing me around." She was teasing him, her smile lighting up her entire face. Who knew you could miss someone this much?

Llewen laughed in a way he hadn't before around her, as it seemed she was much healthier than when he had left, in more ways than one. He couldn't help but briefly examine her features, her rounded out curves, her hair that seemed so much more voluminous than before. He couldn't help but see the noble stock he strongly suspected she came from. Then again, not every noblewoman was pretty or as attractive, so that was a thought he dashed as soon as it entered his head.

"Would that my time away had been more exciting," he said in return. "Please--show me this work you've done. Oh, I mean uh, I command you to show me this project of yours, maid Tabitha!" He once again used his fake boisterous voice for humor.

The news about the crops had honestly been the most exciting part to him, though. He was elated to see her, but his anxiety about the state of the Merrick Estate only grew while he was away, and such things were often unforgiving without a close attention to detail. He would need to speak to Landis later, surely, when his business with Tabitha was over... for now, though, he figured a little break couldn't hurt.

His happiness made her grin from ear to ear, his laugh like music to her ears. It was as if he had never left, the fell in stride together like they had never been apart. She felt her worry and tension subside every second she spent at his side.

She laughed as he teased, she much preferred this than his casual commands. She was glad to jest about it with him. "One moment, let me get the horses squared away." She whistled, fingers to her lips. Two of the peasant boys came running, as if their pants were alight, such was their urgency. She gave them instructions and they led the two horses to be taken care of. "They've been very helpful in getting the courtyard and the stables cleaned up. They'll be good hard workers when they get bigger."

Now it was time to bring Llewen inside, to see her hard work. In gleeful excitement, she tugged his sleeve, turning to face him as she tugged. Her eyes were shining, her lips in a wide smile. Once she was certain he was following, she dropped his sleeve and beckoned him inside, opening the big heavy oak door.

Once they were inside, it would be immediately evident just how much work she had put into the castle. Every surface was cleaned and polished. Not dust or spiderwebs hiding in corners. Everything would be well organized and the stale smokey smell of winter was chased away by stalks of lavender put in vases throughout the entry and great hall. "This has been my project." She was beaming with pride, it was quite a bit different than when he had left.

When she turned to face him, Llewen thought she must have been the most radiant thing he'd ever seen. Her smile, the sun kissing her features, the dress she was wearing--it was almost overwhelming. But seeing her like this brought him joy, and he eagerly followed her into the castle, wondering what surprise awaited him. And what a surprise it was--even Llewen, young man that he was, immediately noticed that much work had been done not only cleaning, but decorating as well, and before Tabitha even said so, he knew that this was her doing. He was at once stunned and amazed.

"Tabby... it's beautiful, Tabby. Thank you..." He turned to look at her, her demure presence and her fuller frame, combined with the work she had done... well, what else could he do? It was too overwhelming, and he'd already missed her far too much. In a half moment he grew close to her, wrapping his arms around her and suddenly kissing her, thinking of no other way he could possibly thank her for what she'd done while he was away. He may have lived here, but she had just made Castle Merrick a home.

Tabitha stood with barely contained excitement as they entered the castle. They stood just inside, and she fidgeted slightly as he took in just the entrance. Of course, that's not all she had done for the castle, but he would see the rest soon enough. Her eyes never left Llewen, she was hoping for a positive reaction. She had wanted to make him happy, and she worked very hard to make it happen. He was quiet for a moment, and it made her antsy, she hoped she hadn't upset him at all.

Tabitha wasn't ready for what happened next, not in the slightest. He turned towards her and thanked her, that in itself was one thing. "Oh, it was no trouble. I just wanted-" He stepped close, very close. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest. What was he doing? She froze as he put his arms around her, but his kiss made her melt. She couldn't resist it, he made her happy and it felt right. She leaned into it, savoring every moment. She wanted it to last forever.

Tabitha knew, she knew it couldn't last forever. She gently pulled away, a soft smile on her face. She reached up and rested her hand gently on his cheek, her own reddened. She brushed a wisp of hair from his forehead her grey eyes searching his, wanting to know where to go from here. "I'm really glad you came back to me, Llewen." Her voice rasped slightly, the heat of the moment affecting her as she tried to swallow the lump in her throat.

He was reluctant to pull away from her, even though their affection was so public, especially as the lord of the castle. He had mixed feelings; on the one hand he knew he was making a mistake kissing some other noble's daughter, if that were true, but on the other it felt so nice and with Tabitha he had no question in his mind that it was what he wanted for him and her. They hadn't known each other long, but in times such as these, you didn't have a lifetime to find and pick someone you wanted, you went with the feeling you had. And that's what Llewen wanted to do, but he couldn't, only because of that one damning detail.

"I'm glad too, Tabitha." He found her voice even more enticing when it was raspy and she was so flustered about it. Kissing her felt like getting a huge weight off his chest, but he knew he couldn't just keep going, as much as he might want to. He paused for a moment, still savoring the feeling and taste of her lips.

"Was... there anything else you wanted to show me?" he finally asked, slowly. "The castle looks wonderful."

Tabitha looked up at him as the stood, the feeling of his lips on hers still lingering. It was like a tingle that made her crave more. They were lucky that the castle still lacked occupants, the rumors would have been out in any other castle already. Hell, they were lucky Landis hadn't popped up out of nowhere like he usually did. Still, there was a part of her that didn't care. She wanted to kiss him again, but she knew she couldn't.

"Well, you can see the rest of the castle when you have time. I did every single room." She even put flowers in Llewen's room. Sunflowers, her favorite. Though she did refuse to touch anything related to his parents. She felt that would infringe upon Llewen, so she had just cleaned and left the flowers to cheer up the room a little. "I also had Michael and Thomas help with the courtyard and Stable. Those were they boys from earlier, they have been excellent help." She was rambling a bit, still flustered and shy.

She stood awkwardly for a moment before looking to the door. "I actually have to take Rosemary out and put her through her paces, it's important that I do. If you want, you can come with. If it's rest you want, I do have rabbit stew on the fire and there is fresh bread and some apples as well." She wanted nothing more than to take him through everything he had missed since he had been gone, but she couldn't neglect her duties either, just because he had kissed her.
