The Thronebreakers

Overview

Once upon a time, the Thronebreaker Free Company was a two hundred or so strong mercenary company consisting primarily of Cortosi soldiers who had nothing left to do after the last of the Quatreville Wars ended. They were led by Don Arkaitz, a battle-hardened noble whose father and father’s father fought against the Anirians in the Quatreville Wars, always on the losing end. Bereft of the last of his familial lands, he took the Thronebreakers against the interests of Vel Anir at all opportunities as a way to spite them.

After the Battle of Coraliv, the Thronebreakers were utterly decimated. Don Arkaitz was presumed dead and the survivors fled the city in any way they could.

A handful of the survivors made their way to Alliria, where they found employment in the service of an eccentric benefactor... an orc alchemist by the name of Urberus, whose stated purpose for employing them was to "collect baubles."

The members in Urberus' employment are:

Purpose

The Thronebreakers had some horse, but were primarily a company of foot, not having enough money to outfit all the soldiers with horses. The Thronebreakers did have some mages among their ranks. Foremost among them was Ondina di Ossatura, also a native of Cortos, who is a powerful necromancer and conjurer. Galen of Elbion also joined their number and brought his talents for illusion with him.

Structure

The Free Company was led by knighted officers such as Don Arkaitz, Sir John Kestrel, and Sir Aimrik Titian. Serjeants like the Ox and Fausto were charged with leading smaller groups of soldiers within the company or overseeing daily tasks.

History

The most unique aspect of the Thronebreakers was that in their contract they give over the right to their remains to the company. Those who die under contract are raised by Dina as undead, or in the case of battlemages as liches, and fight on for the Thronebreakers. In order to prevent disease and decay from spreading, the bodies are alchemically treated and resemble mummies. The process is apparently not as expensive as one might think.

Background

The Thronebreaker Company was all but wiped out defending Coraliv from Vel Anir. The few surviving members currently operate in Alliria, more as paid thugs than any real mercenaries.
