Coraliv is a city located on a large island within the sea of the Cortosi Coast.
Founded originally as a smugglers outpost, Coraliv came into being as a place of trade. Though originally meant to be little more than a stopping point for vessels heading to and from Cortos and Vel Anir, Coraliv quickly began to grow and surpass it's original purpose.
Within just a few years of it's founding, opportunists and merchants saw the island as something more than just a smugglers outpost.
It's place within the Cortosi Sea and it's middling position between the rich lands of Vel Anir and Cortos marked it as a perfect spot of neutrality. Over the years more and more legitimate merchants began to come to the island, and as they arrived so did their money.
Within a generation Coraliv became a city, eventually developing into an independent state with it's own government and oversight.
The City of Coraliv covers nearly the entire island it has been built on save for a small sliver of rock and sea caverns at the western end of the land. The City is surrounded by huge limestone walls mostly quarried from surrounding islands. It sits as a small bastion within the middle of the Cortosi Sea.
Recently it has been occupied by Vel Anir.
Overview
Demographic
Coraliv is mostly populated by human descendants of the original pirates and smugglers who had made their home on the island. Intermixed with this of course is the noble princes who are related to the Rich Merchants that made their way to the island and arguably 'built' the city itself.
Unlike Vel Anir or Cortos however, Coraliv does not hold the same strict xenophobic views as many other human cities. All are welcome in Coraliv, and the city has long prided itself on welcoming those of different cultures, creeds, and species.

Designation
Though founded as a smuggling outpost, Coraliv has over the centuries become a massive center of trade in the Cortosi Sea.
Most merchant vessels at least visit Coraliv in order to ply their goods or speak with other merchants. The city has a thriving economy, it's markets always flush with spices, fish, luxury goods, weapons, and anything else that one might imagine.
Though some of it's economy revolves around the building of ship, the majority of Coraliv runs simply on trade. It is a valuable stop over point for many merchants, and a haven from Pirates.
Of course, just because the city has grown Coraliv has historically held to it's role as a smuggler outpost. Until the fall of Coraliv to the Anirians, the city was well known for turning a blind eye to the trade of certain illicit goods. This will likely change with the new regime.

Description
Architecture
Uniquely, Coraliv does not have a singular architectural influence. Due to it's origin the city has a strong mismatch of cultural influences.
This fact can be seen within the buildings and streets of Coraliv itself. Houses, Palaces, and even Government offices do not share a uniform design. None of Coraliv was ever constructed with the idea of conformity, and was instead put together piecemeal by whomever powerful Merchant was funding the project.
As a result of this there is no one style or look to Coraliv. While one quarter of the city may appear Anirian, another may follow those lines of Cortos, while still others may even hold elven influence.
This complex weaving of design gives Coraliv and odd sort of charm, making it feel like a second home to many people who pass through it.

Points of Interest
Palace District: At the very heart of Coraliv sits the Palace District. It is here that the rich and powerful of the city make their home. The Palace district is an impressive collection of massive manors and mansions. Some of them are walled off, others are pressed right against one another.
Without fail the buildings in the Palace district are all in some way grand. A tremendous amount of money has been spent on these structures, and the very streets seemed to be littered with the riches of the families who make their home here.
The Palace District is also the sight of Government Offices.
Harbor: The central lifeblood of Coraliv itself, The Harbor is a huge walled off section of the Cortosi Sea. Larger than most city harbors, Coraliv prides itself on the ability to keep safe the ships of it's merchants.
The Harbor itself is protected by a massive seachain forged nearly a thousand years ago. Though no one is quite sure how many ships can fit in the Harbor, it is thought that the entire Allirian Armada would only be able to fill half. Whether this is is true or not can't be said, no ones ever done the math.

History
Background
Founded originally as a smugglers outpost, Coraliv came into being as a place of trade. Though originally meant to be little more than a stopping point for vessels heading to and from Cortos and Vel Anir, Coraliv quickly began to grow and surpass it's original purpose.
Its place within the Cortosi Sea and it's middling position between the rich lands of Vel Anir and Cortos marked it as a perfect spot of neutrality. Over the years more and more legitimate merchants began to come to the island, and as they arrived so did their money. A robust and profitable whaling industry sprang up as well, for as long as the cetacean bounty lasted.
Within a generation Coraliv became a city, eventually developing into an independent state with its own government and oversight.
The Government of Coraliv closely held trade at it's central position. Due to this the city never created or armed a true military. Instead Coraliv relied on a small force of trained knights dubbed the 'Cataphracts', chosen from the ranks of the noble elite. These men were specially trained to utilize magical armor that allowed them to move faster, fight longer, and even endure the powers of magic.
Cataphracts over the years developed a reputation for their fierce effectiveness particular in ship board combat. Due to this and the cities massive walls, Pirate attacks on Coraliv were exceedingly rare.
Though this system of protection proved reliable for Coraliv for several centuries, it did not stand up to a true test of force.
Just recently the City of Vel Anir sent a fleet to Coraliv under the guise of ending the smuggling of illegal goods. The government of Coraliv of course claimed it's independence, denying the Anirians entrance to the harbor and calling for a cease in their aggression.
Unfortunately for the great city of the sea its walls proved too feeble and it's cataphracts poor defenders of the people. With no proper military force to defend them, and only the valiant actions of the Thronebreakers stalling the overwhelming Anirian forces, Coraliv fell in a single night.
Vel Anir now claims Coraliv as a protectorate city, intending to install a new government to ensure that trade flows fairly.
