Choosing a spot out of the sun, Mabbon settled down to wait as Kaira's tears began anew. Though he could not claim to know her pain, he understood it well enough. Can't imagine what it would feel like to lose my parents, he thought, his expression grim as he listened to Kaira's sobs echo around the courtyard.
He thought about going to her, then. To comfort her. To draw her into his arms the way he did his mother and father and sisters whenever he made it back from his adventures.
Adventures. Oh, how romantic they made his life sound!
Smiling sadly to himself, the shadow-bearer leaned back against the wall he was sheltering under, closing his eyes as he did. If Kaira needed him, all she had to do was call out, and he would be there by her side. To help, if he could.
Somehow, he doubted it.
