When morning came, Phelaia gathered up her cuudruu leather and cuudruu jerky, saving a slice to munch on while she packed up her camp, then stamped out what was left of her smoking fire. She walked over to Ketu and leaned up against his cheek, rubbing his softly rumbling neck with her arm.

“So, Ketu - if you’re still coming with me, I think we gotta go west, and go find that city between the oceans, in that green place. It’s gotta be all the way across the Asherah! To start, let’s try Tirnua. They got one of those portal stones there, and it’s all kinds of people trading from what Mister Balta used to say. I bet those traders know how to use the stone. And maybe a place with all kinds of people won’t mind the two of us that much. Maybe we can use that stone to cross the ocean.”

Ketu rose abruptly, his head rising straight up in excitement. Phelaia instinctively dug in, and was dragged straight up into the air with him. “Whoa!”

OCEAN! KETU FLY, KETU FISH!

The tiefling nimbly swung herself up onto his head, lying flat atop it as he confusedly turned left, then right, then started rumbling with laughter. She couldn’t help but giggle… wow, for the very first time since she was a very little kid in the slums… before…. But who wouldn’t? She bet it looked like something out of a puppet show, if there was actually anybody around to see it. The dragon lay back down, gently resettling its head on the ground.

“Yeah, I bet you could fly it, Ketu! But what if there’s no little island to land me on while you fish? I ain’t that good a swimmer, Ketu, I’d probably fall off an’ drown, and then no more ‘Ketu’s Phelaia.’”

The dragon fell silent, aside from his thrumming breath. He had no back talk for that one.

KETU FLY… TER-NOO-AH?

“Yeah, Tirnua. Now, some of the people I heard live there are kinda small, and I bet they might look like food to a big guy like you. The Straline, they’re little cat-people, I seen them sometimes in Thagretis. Traders. The Quill, they’re like, I dunno, little chicken-dragons I guess? Usually got their beaks in a book just as big as they are. Anyway, please don’t eat somebody by accident, okay Ketu?”

The dragon just rumbled. Phelaia clucked her tongue, hoping that meant ‘yes.’

She gingerly climbed down to the small of Ketu’s back, and the instant her finger-claws had locked into his scales, he stood, pranced, and lifted off. He circled wider and wider into the sky as they climbed, before relaxing into a southwesterly soar, riding the mighty mountain thermals to cross the Teeth once again.

Phelaia was captivated by the grandeur that spread out below them. The Teeth that towered ominously above the Malakath wasteland looked so different from above, streams and pools, falls, cuudruu herds crossing saddles, large nests of who-knew-what. After a few hours, olive-green dotted foothills came into view ahead as they passed by the last Tooth in the range. The red earth was brighter here, and the air felt moister. And the mountain wind was really getting cold - she was glad to be riding kind of a flying furnace.

Between a couple tree-dotted foothills sat the weirdest building Phelaia ever saw. It looked abandoned, probably forever. It was shaped like a bale, but way taller and broader, made of criss crossed metal hoops. Whatever used to be in the frame was crumbled at the bottom, leaving just that weird hoopy frame standing. What must have been a really fancy road once ran next to it, leading west. It was also crumbling. As she strained to look closer, Ketu started circling down to fly closer to it.

“Not too close, Ketu. I never been here before, I don’t know what to expect.”

As they flew lower over the ancient road, Phelaia made out wagon ruts in the spaces between the parts with the broken, crooked old flagstones. Well, somebody was still using the road…

“Hey, let’s go a little higher, Ketu, then follow that road west. Tirnua’s gotta be the most important thing nearby. This road might lead us there!”

Ketu rumbled, and climbed back up, before starting a lazy S-shaped soar, generally following the road. Every so often, they would pass another off ruined frame like before. Phelaia thought they must have been guard towers or something like that. After about an hour, they could see a caravan of small figures that Phelaia recognized as Straline, the wagons circled off to the side of the road, and the faint sounds of shouting. A dozen dark insectoid shapes circled back and forth around the wagons.. must be Chi-Xilixis! It had the look of a standoff, though actual fighting hadn’t started quite yet. Might not be long… but if they weren’t already fighting, maybe there was time to do something about it.
,
“Land there, Ketu, quick! But not too close to them. I wanna try to talk to them.”

The eager blue dragon dove immediately into a swoop, causing Phelaia to dig her toe-claws in just to avoid flying up off his back. “You did that on purpose!” The dragon rumbled, puffing a hot blast of air to blow over her. He pulled out of his swoop fairly gently, though, gliding in, pulling up, then turning into a smooth landing trot.

The Chi-Xilixis backed away chittering, spears all pointing toward the tiefling and the dragon. Phelaia stood and carefully walked down Ketu’s neck, empty hands held high, her voice strong and as confident as she could make it sound.

“Hey, hey! We’re all talking here, okay? What is going on?”

There was of course a clamor of voices and chittering - both sides were apparently very concerned about which side the big blue dragon was on. A mottled, black-carapaced Chi-Xilixi, wearing only a green-stone amulet and a belt with sacks and pouches tied to it, stepped forward, gesturing toward Phelaia and the Stralines in a sweeping motion as the stone started to glow. Inside Phelaia’s mind, she heard thin, clack-voiced words in the Malak trade-tongue in her mind, as this spokes-bug began gesturing and chittering away. Yesterday, this would have kinda freaked her out…

Thiss iss TOKUA territory! Thesse fleabitten vermin trespasss, to take from uss and ssell to otherss! They hunt food and gather fruit closse to our nest! Next will be our eggss, if we do not sstop them!

Phelaia nodded sternly, crossing her arms, trying to look like the bossy dragon priests who settled merchant rows in the slums.

“Okay, that’s your side of it. Who speaks for the Straline?”

The Chi-Xilixis all started chittering, and several advanced a step.

Phelaia gestured with her hands at them to back off. “Hey, hold it! Are you crazy or something? You don’t want Ketu to think you’re coming at me, trust me!” The blue dragon quickly stepped forward to loom over her, his hot breath washing over and past her to be felt by the closest of the Chi-Xilixis, his head directly above hers now, looking slowly from one side to the other. She patted his ankles backward a few times to get the point across that she was holding him back.

The Chi-Xilixis all stopped, and a couple stepped back. The spokesbug clacked a command, and in a somewhat reluctant fan of motion, all their spears were stood up at ease.

“That’s better! - let’s just talk this out.” She gestured again toward the wagons. “Straline! Send your spokesman out, and quick!”

A tabby-furred Straline with golden eyes leapt atop the frontmost wagon, then dropped down to the ground with feline grace, bowing first to the spokesbug, then to Phelaia, before beginning to speak in Malak in a purring, lisping androgynous voice. They first addressed the spokesbug.

“We see now why the Tokua are angerrred, and we did not know we had trrrespassed. The Old Rrroad has always been frrree to trrravel, if dangerrrous! We took no eggs, we hunted only birrrds, and picked only figs. We go to trrrade goods at Tirrnua-town, forrr sundrrry supplies to brrring to ourrr ship. We have come frrrom yourr people, Tiefling, in theirrr mountain village. Our carrrgo is cuudrrruu leather, cuudrrruu jerrrk, and cuudrrruu marrrrow. Theirrr leaderrr may come, may inspect. If we speak trrruth, as we do, may we prrroceed dirrrectly?”

Phelaia puzzled a moment. A tiefling village? Maybe it was the one Mister Jhinn and Miss Ysra mentioned coming from…

“Well, I’m not from any Tiefling village. I’m Phelaia Hope, and I come from Thagretis. The Straline offer sounds fair to me, but what does Tokua say?” She turned back to the spokesbug, who was enduring a LOT of chittering from his people. It replied in a hasty, exasperated sorta huff.

The Sstraline cannot be trussted! All peopless in Malakath know thiss! How will we know they will not circle back to ssteal our queen’ss eggs? We have been forced here by the sswarm of green-backed Sshaxa! They sseek all territory! And we musst not losse sstrength if we are to ssurvive!

Phelaia considered it a moment. “What if I swore to you that me and Ketu will go with them and make sure they go straight to Tirnua? We are going to Tirnua anyway. And we flew all day long, so Ketu's wings could use a break. This way, they're gone, your eggs are safe, and nobody dies. Okay, Tokua?”

There was a new clamoring, quickly silenced by another loud clack.

You sshow wissdom, Tiefling, and we ssensse no Sstraline liess in your wordss. The Tokua agree. Open your wagonss, Sstraline, that we may ssee the whole truth of what you carry through our territory! And no Sstraline trickss!

The wagons were turned back toward the road, and the donkeys re-hitched as wagon doors were unlatched, crates uncovered, vats pried open. Wax was fetched for resealing the vats. The spokebug clacked, then flitted off the wagon. The scene was repeated at each of the four wagons, until three loud clacks were issued.

Thiss time iss not a lie. They have no eggss and none of our goodss. Sstraline: do not be sseen north of the road, until you passs the ssecond tower ahead on your path. Thiss iss your only warning! We will watch you to the edge of our territory, and ssee whether you keep your word, Tiefling Hope!

The Chi-Xilixis didn’t leave until after the Straline wagons had gotten underway. They were good as their word, too, scouts buzzed after them, just within sight. Phelaia and Ketu followed at the rear for a while, until they had gone a couple miles. Then she walked up to the tabby Straline.

They mrowled as she approached, then greeted her.

“Ourrr thanks, strrrangerrr. I fearrr things werrre not about to end well. You will enjoy a discount at marrrket! We have morrre than ourrr ship will rrrequirrre.”

“That’s great and all, but you need coin to use discounts, and I’m all outta coins. But do you know anything about the portal stone at Tirnua? Where it is, how to use it?”

The tabby’s golden eyes widened, and they considered a moment. “We Strrraline do not use the porrrtal stone, but it lies beneath the rrruined towerrr just seawarrrd of the city. Howeverrr! The Quill speak of the porrrtal when we trrrade, and of the lands farrr beyond. Allirrria! The porrrt-town between the seas! That is wherrre we sail, but the Quill say they can go therrre in a flash of magic! Do I believe them? I will not say. But if you would know morrre, in Tirrrnua the Quill trrrade.”

By nightfall, a haze of light could be seen on the western horizon. The wagons camped in a circle below the third tower they had passed on the road - they had made it out of the Tokua turf. The salt-smell of the sea wafted over them, though they weren't in sight of it just yet. Ketu smelled it, rumbled happily, and leapt into the sky. Twenty minutes later, he returned with a sailfish. The Straline swarmed out in amazement, though he snapped at them, zealously protecting his prize until Phelaia jogged up. He dropped it a few feet in front of her this time. She carved herself a chunk with a knife, then laid her hand on him.

“Can the Straline have a piece to share? There’ll still be a lot for you, it’s even bigger than the tuna! I think they’re gonna help us in town.”

KETU’S FISH?… KETU’S PHELAIA’S FISH?…

His big blue head sulked a moment, casting melon-sized side-eye toward the cowering Stralines he had just nipped at, before he finally huffed a searing hot huff.

STIRR-LEEN EAT SAIL.

Phelaia patted him lightly on the leg, then told the Straline, who eagerly came with knives and a saw. Apparently the sail meat was some kinda delicacy for them. The sailback removed, Ketu gorged himself happily on the rest of the carcass. Phelaia set about making camp, starting her own campfire while Ketu was busy eating. It was a lot easier with the ground not drenched with seawater, and she was already frying her piece of fish in a dab of cuudruu marrow a spotted Straline had shared with her when Ketu padded over. She enjoyed her dinner curled up against Ketu’s paw, under the gleam of twin full moons.

WHY KETU’S PHELAIA BURN FISH?

“I don’t got green fire inside my belly like you do! So, I have to cook meat before I eat it.”

The dragon rumbled and settled down. Phelaia tugged her bedroll gingerly over to him, and curled up to sleep. She still worried about a lot that could go wrong, but hey, one day, one problem solved, and no Thanasissers had come yet. She hoped they didn’t trade in Tirnua. Luckily, the soothing, warm, thrumming and the drain of the day’s events eventually overwhelmed her worrywarting, and she drifted off to sleep too. A lonely green face, with kind amber eyes. A city between two seas… and it had a name, Alliria. And it still felt really far away, but a little less really far away. And that was something.

"I'll be back."

Few words but each one meant and spoken with utter seriousness. Malakath was on the other side of the world but after what Esmoria had told him about others of his kind being there Voe knew he wasn't going to be able to rest until he found it and her whom Esmoria seemed to take great pleasure in emphasizing was a key factor in this adventure.

He still did not know what to make of all of that, some part of him felt such magic was more than a little lacking in ethics.

So the message went from Alliria back up north to the others and Voe took Otho with him to the Allir portal stone.

The journey was quiet and contemplative. Long slow nights blurred into days of hiking and camping allowed plenty of time for wondering about the blue skinned woman.

After a few days of plodding he reached the portal stone and waited. Otho refused to go near it and Voe trusted his companions instincts, so he watched and waited from a camp on a hillside cave.

Phelaia Hope

Phelaia awoke to the sounds of mewling, mrowling, hisses of the bustling Straline as they worked to strike camp. Ketu was flying westward on the horizon, no doubt to gorge himself on fish. She took out a slice of cuudruu jerky and stuck it in her toothy mouth, absently chewing on it as she packed up her own things.

Ketu returned some fifteen minutes later, jaws still smacking from his breakfast. Phelaia had just been worrying about how fat she'd soon get if Ketu kept bringing her these enormous fish every meal. She cocked her head, wondering if the dragon really was in there full-time.

The caravan started moving, cresting one last hill, seeing a huge cluster of those tower-frames laid out in perfect spirals. Colorful banners marked different areas, and all manner of species were already bickering, bartering, and arguing in a nearly constant din that only grew louder as they approached. Ketu certainly drew his share of looks, as did Phelaia herself to a much lesser extent, but as they were peacefully walking along with the Straline, they met no accost.

Once the Straline had set up camp, the tabby-spokesfeline came and beckoned to Phelaia. "Come, come! Felixa will intrrroduce you to Berrrkah. A grrreat sage, even among a people of sages. You should ask Berrrkah of the porrrrtal stone."

They walked through the bustling market, errand runners of different races running by, competing hawkers making grander and grander claims about their wares as they passed by. Phelaia moved instinctlvely to avoid jostles. This was almost like home, and she found that folks were largely the same everywhere, including pickpockets and confidence artists. She really hoped this Berkah wasn't gonna be some con artist. To possibly get totally stuck this close to the portal, without money and without anything she could do without to barter!

Her nose wrinkled disgustingly, remembering what some girls her age with those problems did in the Thagretis slums. Remembering the screams and shouting that came from the alleys. Girls who wasn't lucky enough to get 'prenticed and learn a trade, or find a whole Hope-blessed dragon. Fate was fickle, both ways sometimes. She gave coins when she had them to give, wasn't much she needed that she couldn't go find herself, and even a little bag of them seemed like too much extra weight. She sometimes wondered how the rich people could carry so many of them. Maybe that was the real reason they always had big muscleheads following 'em around.

Felixa led them into a green-bannered enclave, literally abuzz with Quill activity. Ketu rumbled beside her, that goofy chortle he did sometimes. She guessed he musta thought they looked like chicken-dragons too! Inside an open parlor perched a venerable quill with a gem-encrusted monocle, and gem-beaded throng-necklaces, sitting amongst stacks and stacks of tomes, manuals, grimoires, and ledgers. And a crystal ball. Kalbeth...

"OOooooh, Felixa, whooo is this yooou bring to Berkah?" The minute feathered reptile cooed as he fluttered forth, curling around a different but no less plush perch towards the very front of the parlor-shop. Felixa made a gesture of introduction, but let the tiefling do herself the honors.

"Oh! I'm Phelaia. Phelaia Hope. And this big fella is Ketu. It's an honor to meet you, Berkah. I wonder if you could tell me about the portal stones. You see, we need to go to, I think it's called Alliria? A big painted city, on green and gold hills, between two seas, do you know it?"

"Of course! Ooooh, the stooone lies westward toward the sea, in a fig-forest, in the shadooow of the ooold tower ruuuin there. But yooou will need a key! And yooou will need to knooow the ruuuunes! These things I will sell yoooou for merely fifty shekels - for the friend of my friend!"

"That's my biggest problem, I don't even have one shekel. We're wastelanders, me and Ketu. But is there an errand I could run? Or something I could help you with? I mean, I barely know the letters so I'm not gonna be any good with your books. Sweeping up, carrying stuff around maybe?"

"Ohhh? Then how did yooou enchant your booow? I sense a source of magic, from outside our world, tooo which yooou are connected!"

Phelaia stood dumbfounded. Guess the Tief really was really real!

"Is it called the Tief? A friend told me about it once. And it kinda makes sense, but I ain't some wizard or sorcerer or anything, right?"

"I have read once of this Tief, and if yooou have it, yooou have magic of a sort. Yoooou will help me make keys toooday. And if yooou make six keys, I will take back five, and teach yooou the command... and the ruuuune for Alliria."

It was with almost religious reverence that Voe tended to his equipment. The day was bright and clear, the air had just the right amount of chill left in it for him to like the taste of.

Today was a hunting day, well, a hunting morning. With Otho's help to flush them out of the long grass he took home a fat prairie hen to his camp then he plucked it, gutted it and stuffed it with apple slices. Rubbed a mix of lard, salt and thyme onto the pasty flesh and set it high over the fire to cook.

Then he darned his socks and mixed the gizzards with pebbles for Otho to eat. Saved what feathers he could for arrows and fletched two new ones. Waste was the only sin he knew of.

And he watched the portal stone.
Watched as people came and went again and again. In and out from the world over to there and beyond.

Here, away from the people, too high on the hill to be bothered, Voe felt his best. People were complicated, survival was occupying. He would have liked to spend a few weeks up there. All on his own with the wild things.
Alliria for all its wonders was a cacophony of voices. The wild was quiet, approachable and sometimes even still.

"We'll give it until tomorrow."
The first words he said all day came from him mid chew as he dined on hen flesh. Otho's ears perked up at the sound of his voice.

"If they are not through by the risen sun we go in."
Otho whined in meek rebuttal of the plan.

"You are going to need to be brave some day."
The Drake-hound got back to gobbling up the innard mixture.

"Hmm."

Phelaia considered the Quill's offer and figured it couldn't hurt, so she nodded. "Alright, Mister Berkah, I'll give it a try." If a key was worth even 25 shekels, what she guessed the actual selling price woulda been, it seemed a useful skill to know. Not that she ever tried to use the Tief before, not on purpose. It just happened when it happened - and mostly just when it was needed. She hoped this was needed enough.

The Quill got a bag of tarnished, cheap-stamped, hand-long zinc-metal keys, flitted over to a work-table, alit a plain perch, and dumped out the bag onto the table. He slid one before him. Phelaia pulled a dusty stool from a corner at sat at the table, and hesitantly pulled a key in front of her, correcting how it sat to be the same as Mister Berkah's. The Quill took an important sounding breath, then began his instruction.

"Intent... intent is the mooost important thing! Fooocus on what yooou want the key to do. Yooou have seen the pooortal ooopen, yes?"

"Uh, no. I mean, I haven't yet. I heard stories about the one that appeared in Thagretis when I was little. But everybody said only the priests were ever allowed near it. Then I heard the stories about Tirnua, and that another one was out here. They also said the whole city looked like the towers next to the portals. I guess that last story sure checks out."

"Then yooou must see how the pooortals work, tooo learn what tooo fooocus yooour mind upon. Return, when yooou have learned!"

Well, that turned out to be a whole waste of time. She still thanked the Quill, though.

"Let's go, Ketu!"

West... she raised her hand in an L-shape to the sun, moved it a bit to account for the few hours since sunup, and the started walking westward, Ketu walking behind and kinda above her. They went through the Quill district, then an orc district, then an arcing row of those weird-shaped crumbled tower-frames before the fringe of the fig-forest Another one of those crumbling old roads promised another cookie-crumb trail winding downhill and westward, more or less straight toward the Asherah, she reckoned from her memory of the map Mister Balta used to quiz her on. Sure enough, a couple miles out of town, she saw the tower Felixa had mentioned. And what looked like a huge, rickety slum, rising up from the treetops a ways to the northeast. It was built right up the side of a cliff. The salt-smell was strong here. They continued toward the tower.

It was late afternoon by the time they found the stone, standing inside a big scorched circle, at least a dozen yards across. It made her nervous - was that what happened if you messed up making a key and tried to use it? A big fireball? The stone and the ring of rune-plates surrounding it looked wizardy. She found a clearing partway up a little hill, and started making camp. Ketu of course took right off for the ocean. Phelaia laughed. The priests back in Thagretis could probably set the temple clock by the rumbles of that dragon's stomach...

After sharing a great eel as long as Ketu's tail, she began watching the stone, sitting on her spread bedroll with her back to Ketu's fore-haunch. His big head turned to look where she was looking. Nothing obvious was happening, though. The stone just sat there, nobody else in sight, and no sounds but distant birdcalls and faint shooshes of the tide rolling in on the beach, hidden behind the last copse of figs.

WHY KETU'S PHELAIA WATCH ROCK?

"I gotta see what happens when somebody uses it, Ketu. Then Mister Berkah can maybe help me make a key, so we can go through. To Alliria. It has two oceans, Ketu! I think you'll like it there."

KETU FISH!

Hours passed into dusk. Phelaia lit a campfire, gnawing on another piece of cuudruu jerky, before returning to curl up in her bedroll. She drifted off to sleep hoping somebody would come use this damn stone soon, soon replaced by another dream. The green tiefling was also in a camp, cooking something over the fire, with what looked like a small, blue, wingless dragon half-plopped down beside him, half-bursting with anticipation, eagerly awaiting his share of the meal. Those eyes like hers kept watching something in the distance. Just like she was...

"Malakath, one way."
He would figure a way back soon enough. First he had to get passage and thankfully the Noct got cheap passage.

Otho struggled, resisting his collar at every turn but Voe dragged him onward anyway and through the portal.

The transition was not new but Voe was not ready for the swift change time would have on his body. When he looked up the sky was darkening already, was he so far from the Reach now that day had turned to night?

Otho belched green muck from his insides. Something about the stones power upset the drake-hounds stomach something terrible but a fistful of chalkdust eased him well enough that he plodded along behind him.

Voes instincts became alive in that new place. Shadows danced in between the stars. Echoes of wild unthinkables carried on the wind and the earth was burnt to ashes beneath him.

"What manner of place is this?"
He asked his companion before the light of some fire caught his eye like a beacon in the dark.

Malakath was more dangerous than anywhere in the world and Voe knew it, this camp would make or break his whole adventure so he paused a bit before deciding that standing in the dark was no doubt a worse idea.

It took him a while to get close enough for Otho to smell it but it made him go frantic. Barking and squawking at the night around him then it moved, the hillside moved and Voe became overcome with the terrible feeling that he had made a great and final mistake.

They had disturbed a dragon.

Phelaia awoke with a start as Ketu nearly rolled her over, head alert. He padded to the edge of the clearing, looking straight at the portal stone. The tiefling got up, and half staggered over.

"You see something, Ketu? Oh! Someone came through, and I missed it! Hey, Ketu, wait!"

But Ketu crouched, his great wings flapped, and Phelaia found herself knocked backward onto her butt as he took off into the predawn twilight sky. She vainly called after him.

"Ketu! Hey! Wait up!!"

Half-muttering about stubborn dragons, half-fretting about somebody getting hurt for no reason, the tiefling started half-scrambling, half-stumbling down the hill in the direction of the portal, cursing fig-roots as she half-tripped on them. But she had to get there quick! She didn't need Ketu accidentally roasting some merchants!

The dragon landed on the opposite side of the portal, turning toward Voe and Otho, then sniffing at the scorched ground curiously. Then he looked back at the blue drakehound, his big head cocking sideways. He blatted out not quite a roar; it was more like a foghorn kinda clearing its throat - or maybe some curious dragon-greeting.

Before Voe knew it his sword was in his hand for all the good that would do him and Otho, brave and loyal Otho, stood betwixt him and the dragon barking defiantly until the dragon crooned and he stopped to tilt his large head and perk up his ear fins.

Voe had heard of draconic kinship but he was forced to wonder how far that might stretch. Otho was draconic but it was like testing the relationship between a field mouse and giant rat.

"If you have any sway over this one Otho, now would be a good time!"

Otho yelped and wagged his long tail. Voe had seen him like this before, excited. It wasn't completely relaxed but it was something.
Maybe this was a friendly dragon?

Phelaia finally burst from the undergrowth into the clearing, hopping sideways on one foot while shaking off a tangle of witch-fingers that had snared onto the sandal of the other, then falling right onto her bottom as the root-ends finally gave way. She wore an old, oft-repaired thin leather breastplate strapped snugly over a nearly as old muslin shift, the fabric distressed in places somewhat like it had been convinced by force of habit to grow up with her, and a loose pair of linen trousers tied bloused at her knees. As she got back up and jogged into the clearing, she smelled somewhat strongly of underripe figs and faintly of brimstone. Her attention was fully on the dragon at first.

"Ketu! What's gotten into you! You..."

And then she noticed Voe and Otho. She stopped and pointed at Voe, slack jawed.

"YOU... you're that tiefling from the dreams! In the city between two seas... but you're here? Hey! You can use the portal?"

The dragon bounded across the clearing to loom over Phelaia's shoulder from behind, eyes fixed firmly on Voe's face, a steaming hot blast of air huffing out from his nostrils and clenched jaw. The huff blew Phelaia's shock of hair forward, but didn't seem to bother her much. She patted his leg gently.

"Easy, Ketu, easy! He's... he's from that dream I told you about."

The dragon's head rose, remembering the story of a city between two oceans... fish!

Phelaia answered the dragon as though he had just spoken to her.

"Yeah, Ketu! The city with all the fish!"

She turned back toward Voe, looking him up and down, completely astonished for a moment before finally remembering her manners with an abrupt start and a whispered cuss - *kalbeth*

"Sorry - I'm Phelaia. Phelaia Hope. And this big fella here is Ketu... so.... uh... did you have the weird dreams, too?"

How does one describe a dream come to life?

Voe couldn't, he could speak but his vocabulary was limited. He wondered if the words even existed for this feeling.

Slowly he took the blue woman's hand.
"I know, I mean, I know your name. I know your face and I knew you were here."

He might have sounded insane but he knew he wasn't. Between them Otho happily gave Phelaia an investigative sniff his tail wagging his thick tail before going over to inspect Ketu the same way, sniffing about his forelegs.

"I'm Voe. Just Voe. That's Otho. A woman named Esmoria um... it's hard to explain."
He rubbed the back of his head to relax.

"She... made us aware of each other, somehow. I'd be lying if I said I understood it."

He wasn't even considering the dragon anymore.
"No I... I don't have dreams I just saw you or an image of you and knew you were real but now that you're here I don't think I know what to do."

Yellow eyes scanned her face, taking in all the features, already they seemed familiar.

The dragon's attention abruptly shot back from chasing dream-fish in dream-oceans to Voe as he touched hands with his tiefling. His head dipped back down to loom above Phelaia’s shoulder, melon-sized amber eyes narrowing to fully examine this act. But just then Otho sniffed at his foot. The dragon rumbled, huffing another waft of hot air over the pair of tieflings, and the head swung away again, and this time his paws followed. The dragon in fact turned most of the way around, maneuvering to lay his head down to sniff at Otho, once again blatting a curious crooning note at him. His tail also swung a bit in the turnaround, knocking Phelaia forward, right into Voe.

"Voe... it's nice to... HEY!"

She laughed, flashing a toothy grin as she backed up a pace or two to a less... close... distance. Funny how she suddenly felt so winded from just that little run down the hill...

"Ketu's... well... I guess we're still getting used to being 'round each other. He's knocked me clean over at least a couple times a day since we met, but he seems careful enough not to step on me or crush me flat. I guess we're connected somehow. I can hear him think if we're touching. I swear sometimes he can hear me think even when we're not... Hey, are you and Otho like that at all?"

She realized that she was staring again.

"But anyway... Voe... and Otho... - it's nice to put names with the faces I been seeing every night. Wonder why I didn't dream that part up too... But you don't get dreams? Like, any dreams at all?"

She looked past Voe toward the portal stone, and the orange just starting to pinken on the dark mountain line in the distant east, and then down to the scorched patch they were all standing in.

"Oh! - the sun's gonna be up real soon, and it seems like these portals explode or something when they open. We should probably clear off it, right? You and Otho wanna come to my camp? It's just up that hill there. I guess we could talk about what to do there. And if I've learned one thing 'bout Ketu, we'll most likely have some breakfast to cook right after dawn."

Voe

He caught her, arms out and then half closed about Phelaia before loosening to allow her to step away.

She was warm, as warm as he was. Everyone else felt a little cold to him.

"No."
Voe answered flatly.
"I don't dream at all."

He just slept and woke up. No inbetween.

"Otho? No he's just an animal. I raised him since he hatched but he's not in my mind. He doesn't speak, not with words anyway."

He listened as she spoke and Otho sniffed, undaunted at Ketu's snout and smelling the faint odour of food he licked the great dragons lips.

"To be honest I'm simply pleased he's with you. I think it would have been some horrible twist of fate for us to be eaten by a dragon minutes into our time in Malakath."
A small smile graced his thin lips as he gestured for Phelaia to lead on. He had breakfast already but he could eat again.

She nodded eagerly and started to lead them uphill. Ketu flapped his wings and took off, circling the hill once before landing in the clearing up ahead of the rest of them. Phelaia couldn’t hold in her excitement. She wasn’t usually a huge blabber, but she almost felt like there was a lot of catching up, even though they actually just met.

“I’m glad Ketu didn’t eat you! I was pretty worried he was gonna roast somebody when he made a beeline for the stone like that! As for animal or people, he’s people or close enough. His thoughts maybe ain’t real deep, but he sure has plenty of them, and not all of them about food either. He’s real curious!”

They came up into a clearing. A crumpled over bedroll half tangled with a desert robe sat amid a set of fresh dragon paw prints, next to a dragon-shaped indentation in the grass-clumped red earth. A gnarled, almost sinister-looking longbow leaned tucked into the handy branch-joint of a fig tree, with a satchel, a quiver, a weapon belt, and a pair of scabbarded shortswords. A small cookfire smoldered next to an old, almost over-seasoned cooking pan, an equally ancient looking iron spatula, and a creased flap of leather strewn with a few small spice pouches. Ketu crooned again as they walked in.

“Welcome to our camp! Not as it’s any big thing. We got just what we carry and eat whatever we find… mostly what Ketu finds since I met him. Big ocean fish, cuudruu… I bet I gained almost half a stone in less than a week.”

She looked Voe up and down again.

“So how ‘bout you, Voe? What do you and Otho do? You were in that city between the seas in my dream, but you didn’t look from there, right? I mean, you don’t look like city people. At least not most I ever met.”

"You don't know how glad I am that he didn't."
Voe replied unwilling to look too long at the dragon as it looked over and about them.

The idea of breakfast intrigued him though and came as welcome distraction. Whatever fish the great Ketu would catch would no doubt be foreign to him. He could not help speculate at how it might taste.

When he noticed Phelaia was eyeing him he looked down at himself as if he expected to find a stain on his tabbard or some such.
No he was a little dusty from the dragons entrance kicking up dust but otherwise unblemished.

"We are not from the Cities. We live in a mountain range called The Spine. It's harsh but it's home. There we do our best to keep the people who travel the mountains safe."

Slowly he made his way to the campfire and gestured to it.

"May I?"

“Oh, I don’t think you gotta worry about Ketu anymore, Voe. I think he was just protecting ‘Ketu’s Phelaia’ as he puts it. He sure seems to like Otho a lot!”

She winced as the first rays of sunshine smacked her in the face, throwing up her arm to get a bit of shade, laughing. Ketu perked straight up at the arrival of dawn, blatting out a short note towards Otho before turning, crouching, and leaping into the air, flapping off into the northwest towards the Asherah.

Phelaia nodded and gestured encouragingly. “Sure, Voe, go right ahead! So you and Otho are like pathfinders, then? Helping regular folks get from place to place in the mountains without starving, giving into the heat, or getting eaten, that kinda thing?”

Voe

Smiling up as he planted himself into a squat Voe replied.
"That's exactly it really. Pathfinders."

Otho watched forlorn as Ketu left then his large head turned back to Voe silently asking if they would follow.

"No, come here. Sit."
Reluctantly Otho complied with his master and lay down, head on his paws, before breathing in deep and letting it all out in a pouting huff at Voe's heels while he tended the fire and stoked it. Fed it what sticks and took his backpack off to rummage through it.

"Thank you for pouting in front of someone I travelled half the world to meet."
Voe said as if nobody else was around before a thought struck him.
"Phelaia, you seem okay with all of this. Did it not strike you as odd that you felt compelled to find a man you had never even heard of?"

It was in his pack somewhere, under the bedroll and towel but they were hard to move without taking it all out.

Phelaia clucked her tongue and thought a minute before answering.

“A couple months ago, Voe, I dreamed that some strange demon came and gave me a bow. And there it was when I woke up. I been dreaming about a blue dragon my whole life. And then I find Ketu, totally by accident. Then I start dreaming about a green tiefling and a blue drakehound. It’s almost like fate gets tired of me stumbling around sometimes and just strolls up to tap me on the shoulder. Fate ain’t all good things, neither. The stuff that bow does spooks me at times, and I learned that somehow, I made that bow with some weird connection I have to magic I don’t understand. Like from Pandemonium or something. And Ketu is amazing, but he also comes with all kinds of worries. So I’ll take a kind-eyed green tiefling kind of surprise. I think I’m gonna need all the help I can get! And I think you’re maybe looking for something too? Cause maybe I could help you too?”

She hauled on her desert robe and tied it snug, then gingerly rolled up her bedroll to bring over to her pack before turning around to face him again.

“Maybe it’s something to help you carry ‘round some big responsibility? Cause in my dreams, it was like you were already searching before all this happened. I mean, at first I thought you looked lonely, like I get sometimes out in the wasteland. But then it seemed more like empty than lonely, like some important piece was missing? I dunno. I’m just a street kid from the slums, got lucky enough to get ‘prenticed as a pathfinder. But here I am knowing where I am, but totally lost at the same time. Did this Esmoria say anything ‘bout it to you?”
