Immortality. The thing everyone wanted. The thing everyone needed. The thing that only a few could achieve. Genevieve wasn’t even immortal. She just had an extraordinarily long lifespan in comparison to others. She would still die someday in the far off future surrounded by kids and grandkids and great great grandkids. A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth at the thought. It did sound nice.

Genevieve quickly followed Coran out of the room. They didn’t have bags and she didn’t have a change of clothes. That was something she was hoping to change soon though. She was tired of wearing the same thing everyday.

“Are we going over there right now?”

Coran nodded his head. "Yes."

Why delay any longer?

Every day that passed by was another day for the other Kindred to gain power. For her worship to spread and her word to grow in strength even more. The faster they acted, the more strength they were able to gather to him the better.

Best not to tarry.

"We'll being with a question." He told Genevieve. "A bent knee, and then."

He gestured to himself. "A new face."

From there they could throw their party, offer their reward. Offer this drab little town a night that they would never forget.

"And a new dress," Genevieve mimicked Coran's gesture to herself.

She walked beside Coran as they exited the inn. The bright sun reminded her that she had drank way too much the previous night and she needed her body to hurry up with its healing. Fuck hangovers.

Genevieve asked for directions on where to find Cobell from the owner of the inn. Once the directions were given, the demon and his fae were off.

"I do not think I have been this excited about anything in a long time," she said as they walked.

It was true, obviously, but it was more than that. This was new and exciting and she was looking forward to it. She did not even care that she was doing it with Coran.

Coran slowly moved alongside Genevive, glancing at her as she made the request. "A new dress, yes."

That was, at least, easily fulfilled.

If everything worked out the way it should she would have a thousand new dresses. Such an expense was paltry now, when he had his power? It would be but the very blink of an eye.

"I must admit." He told her softly, the manor approaching quickly before them. "There is something...grand about this. Something new after even an age upon this world."

A new power to be found, exploited.

The greater whole of him craved it, demanded it. The avarice within him roiling and grasping. Only growing as they reached the gates of the manor.

"It is a new way for you to gain power, Coran. It is exciting and grand," she said with her brilliant smile.

They came upon the manor and were stopped by the house guards. The men looked quite grumpy to have visitors coming this early.

The wider guard stepped forward with a scowl, "what ya want?"

Genevieve bit the inside of her bottom lip to keep herself from scowling at the man.

"Good morning," the fae sang sweetly, "we are here to see Lord Cobell."

The guard chuckled and looked at the other before speaking again. "Ain't no Lord but he should be. What ya want from him?"

Genevieve looked over at Coran. It was his turn since she couldn't lie.

Well perhaps it'd be better not to inhabit the body of an arrogant Lord.

There was always a sliver of personality left when he took on a form. A small scrap of the person always seemed to stick to the corpses that he stole. The stronger the will, the more of that person remained. An interesting trait, and often why he did not take the bodies of dwarves.

They were a surprisingly...resistant species. Best to hope this man was not a dwarf. "I have a business proposal."

Coran said simply.

Then without another word he suddenly reached beneath his cloak. A second later he fished out a pouch full of gold, the weight of it enough to bend most wrists. He tugged it open, showing the contents to the guard and dropping a few of the crowns into his palm.

"Understand?" He asked calmly.

The Guard froze, glancing down at his hand, and then slowly nodded his head.

The guard was quick to let the visitors into the manor once the bribe had been made. This would be quite easy if the mans own guards were greedy and easily bought. The guard who had spoke whispered something to the other before the other stepped out and motioned for the two to follow him.

Genevieve and Coran were brought into a large sitting room and left to their own devices while they waited. She decided to lounge on the claw footed couch and she immediately felt relaxed. This floral patterned couch was definitely comfortable and she could have easily taken a nap right then.

"You explain then I will coax if needed?" She asked Coren as they sat in silence.

Coran did not sit.

Instead he looked around the room., observing the paintings, the statues, the patterns of it all. A frown touched his lips for a brief moment, as though a thought were trailing over the back of his mind. "I do not think he'll need any coaxing, my dear."

The Demon told Genevieve.

"Just ensure the doors are closed." It was not exactly what they had discussed, but close enough. "I'll see to the rest."

Before The Fae could offer her response a man walked through the double doors that they had been lead through. He was handsome, as far as mortals went, a slight beard and his eyes surprisingly kind. He looked to the two guests in confusion.

"Good evening, I am Master Cobell...I'm somewhat...confused at your purpose here? I did not have any appointments but my Guard Insisted I see you."

Coran smiled, turning on his heel to regard the man. "My fault, Sir. I wished to have a word. My beloved and I you see have only recently come to town."

As the Demon engaged the man in conversation, he waited for Genevieve to do as he had told her.

Genevieve simply nodded at Coran's orders and started towards the door as the man entered the room. Oh, she had made a good choice. He was handsome and had the air of someone who commanded respect. Yes...he would do nicely.

She simply nodded at Cobell as she stepped passed him and towards the door. She gently shut it and locked it as Coran spoke.

"I wasn't really expecting anyone to off-"

The click of the lock echoed out into the room. It was all that Coran really needed to hear. There was no point in negotiation with this man. Any argument, any deal made would be moot at the end of the day. He was a demon of Avarice.

Not bargains.

Black smoke burst from the mouth of the man who had been standing before Cobell. His face spewing suddenly with the heinous scent of acrid ash as Coran poured forth from the man standing in front of him. His figure shook.

A howl of pain and fear echoed out.

Then, the body that Coran had been possessing dropped to the floor with a loud thud. His skin flaking, his form half folded in on itself. "Interesting."

The demon remarked in his new body, fingers furling and unfurling.

"It seems my dear, you chose a criminal." He chuckled. "A charlatan, driven by greed."

Coran sounded utterly pleased.

Genevieve had already been walking back towards Coran by the time the old body fell away and he stood as Mr. Lawrence Cobell. She studied Coran's new face with proud smile. He was gorgeous. She really had a way with picking out bodies.

She was in it purely for the connections and the looks but Coran's pride in her made her feeling something new. She was nice.

"I wonder if I have a sixth sense about what you need, Coran," she said as she touched the new face lightly. "I am quite fond of the way Mr. Cobell looks...looked...I am not sure of the proper term in this case."

She removed her hand from his face and just stood there with a smile that looked like pure deviousness.

"I believe we will find great success in this town, my dear."

The Irony wasn't lost on him.

"It seems you do." He complemented with a slight smile, allowing her palm to caress his cheek. Eyes then quickly flickered towards the body which now lay upon the floor. "I believe the good Mr. Cobell's servants won't question getting rid of a body."

Not from what the man's memories were telling him. "They seem the...compliant sort."

He chuckled.

"If we are to find success, we must begin immediately." The Demon remarked.

"We have a party to throw." A wide smile touched his lips. "Great rewards to offer, and mortals to tempt."

Coran whistled, calling to the servants beyond. "Let's begin, shall we?"

He asked Genevieve with a grin.

Genevieve did not need convincing when it came to party planning. She was a pro at it even if she hated most of the people of the Summer Court. She had still spent thousands of years at parties and shit.

Coran was right about the staff. They were compliant and welcoming of Genevieve as their new mistress. Well...most were...there were a couple that she had to convince. The fae did most of the work but she had given Coran the task of getting the people to the party.

It was only two days later that she swept down the grand staircase wearing a dark red gown that accentuated her womanly curves. She was short by fae standards but she was taller than most human women and a lot of the men. She did not feel that her glamour was necessary here. This was her home after all.

Genevieve was going over last minute arrangements with some of the staff with just an hour to go before guests would arrive. Coran would be so powerful after this and it would be beautiful.

While Genevieve planned, Coran prepared.

Gold was easy enough to find. Master Cobell having a vault full of it, and what the man did not have the Demon fetched through means of magic.

As it was with everyone else, there was a cost. Magic on this plain always had a price. Coran's abilities were no different. Yet what he could do was not magic, not really. His very existence in Arethil was determined by the law which wizards and sorcerers held themselves to. He was here because he was constantly paying his price.

That was why he killed.

Why he took the dead as his host. Why he drank from Genevieve. It was all anchors, keeping him from being drawn into the abyss.

So then, Coran did not need magic to provide the gift that he had promised. He did not need some great arcane ritual or spell. All that he required was a piece of himself. One that he carried as he made his way down the stairs toward Genevieve.

Inside of a small bottle of clear glass swirled darkness. It moved and shifted, rounding on itself again and again. An almost hypnotic dance, captivating enough that one could get lost within. "Immortality."

Coran told Genevieve, holding up the bottle.

"In a way." The demon mused.

Genevieve looked up and smiled at Coran as he walked down the stairs. Her eyes focused on the bottle and the swirling darkness. She had a feeling it was something to do with their event tonight and she was not disappointed when he stopped in front of her and explained.

“Fascinating,” the fae said as she was mesmerized by the darknesses dance. “I have a feeling it’s more than just immortality? A little bit of control for you to exert over the victim?”

Coran mused. "No, sadly not."

He admitted with a shake of his head.

"This part of me has been severed." For a brief moment the Demon wondered what that control would be like, what it could have offered him, but such a power was beyond even himself. "There will be other effects."

The Demon said freely. "But they will not be beholden to me."

In truth, he had absolutely no idea what would happen.

He was confident the sliver of himself would let someone live forever. Yet the price would be great, and the craving horror within would without a doubt settle deep within. "It will be fun to see what happens."

Coran said with a wicked smile.

Genevieve found her own lips curing up into a matching wicked smile.

"Despite my best intentions, you are growing on me, my dear," she said as she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. "I have not thought about wanting to kill you in at least two hours," she said as she pulled away.

"Our guests should be arriving shortly and I cannot wait to see what trouble we will get in to tonight," Genevieve hummed as she walked down the entryway towards the kitchen.

It was not long until their guests arrived. Genevieve was Mr. Cobell's new partner. No one questioned it as the two of them greeted the guests like they had been doing it their entire lives.

Every rich merchant and tenuous nobleman within fifty miles attended Mr. Cobell's party.

Apparently the man's connections had been far enough reaching that his word alone could be the draw of many hundreds. By the time the night was in full swing the Manor was filled nearly to the brim. Servants rushed around with foods, drinks, and other favors.

Coran had personally greeted more than a hundred guests, and he was sure that Genevieve had done much the same.

As the night continued to roll around, the Demon found himself standing upon the upper Foyer. He leaned against the railing, watching as the people milled below. He knew what they discussed, whispered and talked eagerly about.

Most of them had already heard rumors of prizes, of things being offered.

None of them quite yet knew the truth. "I think it almost time."

Coran mused, gently running his fingers over one another as he considered the crowd below. They were a useful, self-indulging lot, but that was exactly what he needed. All of them would find a new god by the end of the night.

Genevieve had made her way up the starts when she say Coran move that way. They had not spoken since before the party had started because they had both been quite busy.

The guests she greeted had many questions for the new woman in Cobell's life. Where was she from? How did they meet? Wasn't he just the most handsome man? It was enough to make her want to vomit but she had instead kept the smile plastered on her face as she did her job.

"I think you are right," she said as she placed her hand on his with a smile. There were many eyes on the two of them even as they looked over their victims.

"How many people have you had the urge to kill this evening? Cause there have been a few for me," she chuckled before smiling and nodding at a guest who waved up at the hosts.

Coran mused for a brief moment. "Kill?"

He let the seconds tick by.

"None." A perhaps surprising revelation. "Consume?"

The Demon chuckled. "A different story."

His head shook as though he had just told a funny joke, and then slowly he turned towards Genevieve. She had done well in hosting this party so far, but now it was time to get to the real reason that they were all here. A different sort of game.

One she would host as well.

"Make the announcement." He told her. "Be sure they know what's coming. What they can win tonight by giving way to their greed."

Genevieve would start them, enthrall them not with her magic, but her words. Then he would say his piece, and take their souls.

Genevieve threw Coran a look, "well kill for me because I cannot consume but same sentiment."

She smiled and kissed Coran on the cheek (for appearances, of course) before she put her hands on the railing. She nodded to one of the guards to get everyone's attention and once everyone had settled down, she spoke to their guests.

"I want to say thank you again for joining us this evening. We have had a wonderful time so far and we hope you have as well. Tonight we have many different competitions to take part in with various prizes that are well worth it."

She listed some of the competitions and some of the prizes. They last was saved for best though.

"The grand prize this evening is something worth more than you could even imagine. For tonight, Mr. Cobell and myself, will be giving one lucky winner immortality..."

The words hung in the air as whispers moved around the manor.

"That prize will be awarded to the most well rounded winner for the evening. Who can win the most different competitions?"

The words seemed to thin the air.

Some people laughed, some people chuckled, others seemed entirely aghast that such a thing would even be suggested. Coran watched them all, the faces, the expressions as they flickered and suggested. He could tell most thought it absurd, but that didn't matter.

"That's preposterous! Gold is all well and gold but lets not pretend any of us will live forever!"

Laughter this time came a bit more clearly, though even the man that spoke seemed to hold a tangle of nerves in his tone.

Slowly he stepped up besides Genevieve. "Oh I assure you, ladies and gentlemen."

Coran said with a wide smile.

"Everything we say is true, and everything..." His fingers snapped, and suddenly servants around the room moved. Some opened chests of gold, others removed cloches from trays to reveal beautiful glittering gems. "Is real."

Even the wealthiest in the room felt a spark of greed. Eyes catching on gold, jewelry, and then slowly drawing up towards Coran.

He placed the bottle of swirling black upon the railing in front of him. "Everything."

Dozens of eyes locked on him, no, not Coran, but what held in his hand. The constant, shifting movement a hypnotizing draw to even the strongest mind.

Genevieve watched the eyes of the guests as the servants started to move around with their treasures. She knew Coran had to be loving this because they looked like they were about to start murdering each other to get the gold and gems and other beautiful expensive items.

When Coran raised the bottle, she found her eyes wandering towards it. It was beautiful and it was not even something she wanted or needed.

"I think you are all ready to begin the competitions?"

Her voice was sweet and melodic as she sent the suggestion towards the crowd. It would not make them do as she said but it would certainly help implant the great idea in their heads.

Clamor began almost instantly.

A dozen voices that rang within one another. Men and women both eagerly trying to throw their hat into the ring for the games that would soon begin. Coran could feel the greed begin to grow within the room. The corruption of the soul.

The want, the need for more.

It was not even the immortality that did it, not entirely. Some still disbelieved, but it didn't matter. The stage was set, and now it was time to play. "What is first, my love?"

Coran asked, as though he did not know.

"The races? Or the tournament of blades?" He mused. "One is so much more dangerous than the other..."

The Demon trailed off. "Perhaps we start with something easy?"

Genevieve gave Coran the smirk that told the world she was up to no good. She tapped a finger on her lips as she thought about the options. So many choices and so much entertainment to be had. These peoples greed did not even do anything for her but the look in Coran's eye did. He was already feeling the effects of this little party.

"I believe races are the better bet. Slicing through opponents gets more fun once they have drank some. I wonder how many poor souls will parish tonight. So very sad," her words did not match the menace and glee in her voice.

"Shall we go watch, my love?"

She held out her arm for him to escort her down the stairs and out to the garden where the races were set up.
