Dearest Uncle,
Do forgive the abruptness, or what may seem to be abruptness, of this letter and its entreaty. My return from the war in Cortos to my duties as Lady of Vel Numera has given me some time to think—to think, as it were, on the things which I have, and more directly, on the things which I do not. I am grateful, of course, for my many blessings and fortunes, and indeed, to come home from a harrowing conflict is certainly not the least of them.
Nevertheless, I do so very much think on one thing in particular, and verily am I pained by it. I wish not to alarm you in writing this, for surely any bodily wound would be the greater torment; I am well and in good health, of that you can rest assured. What ails me is a pain of the heart, coming and going, now with lesser strength, now with greater strength. But I believe you, and my father Neil (for I have also sent him a letter), may help to alleviate what grieves me.
Might we meet in person? Whether in Vel Anir itself or in Vel Numera, whichever is most agreeable for the schedules of yourself and your brother, my father.
With great love,
Kristen
