Announcement New Years Behind the Scenes

To usher in the New years I'm going to drop a series of bits of information about Arethil and how we went about making this place.​

Some of them will be interesting. Some will very silly.

Here's the first:

Originally the site's main theme was going to be green. It was going to feature some background art of the Eldyr Tree which was a location we were going to make more important to the setting.

We didn't get permission to use the art so we went with Rune Theme as the default before release and sort of forgot about the Eldyr Tree...

Maybe it will feature in an event in 2021

The map was made from scratch by the very talented Netherworld

When it was done, staff spent an awful lot of time discussion an island that looked like balls.

This one I think:



We spent far too much time debating this and eventually asked Netherworld to change it.

Sadly, testicle Island was lost before we even opened.

The first site we built was a scifi forum set in the Expanse universe. Unfortunately it did not last, but it looked like this:

During the Age of Wonders the great architects of age time who had fused magic and technology tried to tamper with the portal stones.​

Ultimately this is why the civilisations of the time were wiped out. ​

Belgrath was originally going to be called Barabas.​

Arethil was the name of Kasim Areth DnD campaign location.​

​

We weren't going to use it.​

​

No one came up with a better name.​

Civilisations on Arethil have been around far, far longer than those on earth. Tens and tens of thousands of years, but the world keeps falling into dark ages.​

​

Arethil is slowly coming out of one of these now. Reading and writing are still the privilege of the few, but it is starting to trickle down into the merchant classes from the nobility.​

Somewhere on Arethil there are more relics from the creators of the portal stones. They may lead to the truth about who they were and whether they still exist.​

The hidden continent was drawn with the very first map. It has always been obscured with clouds but is fully drawn.​

Much like my terrible haircut to people I used to work with, it will be revealed in 2021.​
