"Cassian!"

Kain's crying of his name was muffled by the water closing over his head. Lexi half glanced behind her when she felt and heard something behind her. There was clear surprise on her face when she saw who it was who had dived after her. About her lips as a bubble to help her breath and with a flick of her fingers the same bubble appeared around his so he too could breathe. She pointed for him to follow her after her.

The serpent had not expected for its attackers to follow it to its own domain so it hadn't sunk that deep beneath the waves. It was attempting to get the weapons out of its throat and eyes. Blood reddened the ocean around them and it wouldn't be long before other predators were drawn to the smell.

Lexi threw her blade towards Cassian and motioned she wanted him to attack after her spell.

When he was ready to swing it she clapped her hands. The creature contorted suddenly as if it were in cast amounts of pain but it would give Cassian a chance to take its head off.

The water was freezing, it knocked the air from his lungs and felt like knives stabbing at his skin, but he pulled himself down to find her. He pulled in a gasp of air thanks to her spell, and he nodded as she gestured for him to follow. He'd never swam in the sea before, he hadn't honestly realised how deep and dark it was, the weight of it felt like it was crushing him as he dived deeper, trying to see through the thick blood that obscured his vision.

He reached out to grab the blade before it sunk, and nodded again. It was difficult to move quickly in the water, but as Lexi cast, Cassian plunged the blade as hard as he could into the serpents throat, and yanked at it to sever it's head from it's neck.

Lexi held the spell, her face contorted in a mix of pain and concentration as Cassian worked. It was a high level spell and took a lot of the energy out of her to render such a large animal immobile but slowly and finally the head came off the beast and it fell away into the sea. Lexi breathed out in relief as she let go of the spell and the rest of the body too went slack and began to sink. She shifted back onto her stomach and swam over to him, wrapped her arm around his waist and then winked. A rise of bubbles shot up under them, propelled them in a jet up back towards the surface.

When they broke it the bubbles about their mouths burst and Lexi spluttered at the shift from air provided by a magical source to the real salt air. The ship was a little distance away but there was a series of shouts when they appeared and Tryst threw the pair a rope.

"Still want to sail around the world?" Lexi wiped the blood from her nose which had begun to bleed as she wrapped her hand around the rope and allowed herself to be dragged back to the ship.

Cassian grabbed hold of her as he felt her arm around his waist and he watched the surface race toward them. He coughed as they broke the barrier and gasped in a deep breath of real air. He was instantly shivering and he reached for her face with both tremulous hands, pushing her wet hair back and inspecting her as his thumbs caressed her cheeks.

"Fuckin' hell, lass.." he shuddered a breath and pulled her in to feed on the warmth of a kiss, his heart pounding painfully in his chest. He stared at her with relief and held onto her tightly with one arm as the other gripped the rope that pulled them in.

Tryst pulled them both onto the deck and Cassian lay on his back and pulled the woman against his chest as he shook and panted for air. She'd be the death of him.

Lexi's soft laugh was muffled by his kiss as she allowed herself to be dragged closer to him. She wasn't faring much better with the shivering thing. The sea was frigid and this was her second dunk, albeit planned this time at the very least. She offered him a small smile as he smeared the blood from her lip and looked at her with worry. She was about to say something when Tryst heaved on the rope and dragged them back onto the deck as if the pair weighed nothing at all. There was a general shouting for blankets and things as the pair lay groaning on the wooden boards of the ship.

One soft thick sheepskin fell about her just before Cassian pulled her to his chest. She gave another chuckle and tugged the skins about them both.

"You d-didn't h-h-have to c-come in w-w-with m-me," her teeth were chattering hard and she wiped again at the blood pouring from her nose. There was more shouting happening before Aeleanora was beside them both. She placed a hand on both of them and with a soft murmur heat began to flood through them, warming them. Lexi breathed a sigh of relief.

He was holding on to the woman for dear life and pressed a kiss down on her head as she spoke.. "Told..you lass.. I follow you." he laughed under his breath. "Ffffuck .. Oban is... gonna be ..fffuckin warm.." he groaned. His muscles ached from the tension and painful tremors spread through his body in waves.

The touch from Aeleanora was welcomed with a throaty rumble and he looked up at the woman "Yer a fffuckin' angel, lass." he smiled and rubbed his hands up and down Lexi's upper arm, echoing her sigh as the heat seeped into his muscles and bones. His muscles eased, and slowly the shaking stopped, but he wasn't ready to let go of her.

"Yes I think we deserve a summer holiday," Lexi laughed huskily at his words and lightly brushed at his cheek. Despite the radiating warmth it still took a moment for her body to stop automatically shaking; it knew it should be cold for it was still soaked to the bone with the freezing water. After a few more moments in his arms she moved to sit up to have Alec shove a wad of handkerchiefs into her hand. She glanced up and pressed them to her nose with a muted nod of thanks.

"You need to get out of your wet clothes or the spell will have been a waste," Aeleanora commented in her matter of fact manner, though there was a slight crease to her brow that could be mistaken for concern. She held out her hand and Lexi took it, allowing herself to be pulled to her feet. Alec likewise helped Cassian. "You used too great a spell," the woman berated her commander with a deepening scowl.

"It was the pressure of the sea is all, I'll be fine," she waved off her friends worry and started off towards the cabin. "Let's get moving, I want to go home - no offence Mitch," the captain looked relatively calm considering what had nearly happened to his ship and gave a mocking salute before returning to the wheel and shouting orders. Once they were inside the cabin she began working on getting her sodden clothes off of herself whilst one hand pinched her nose.

Cassian patted Alec on the shoulder as he helped him to his feet, his eyes moving between Lexi and Aeleanora as they exchanged some tense words. He followed her to the cabin and his brow knit as he watched her.. "Let me help, lass." he rumbled at her and went to help her undress and left her to deal with the nosebleed. He was still rigid and cold, but his tremors had died down and his fingers weren't as numb at least.

"Aeleanora seems to think you were reckless with your spell..." he glanced down at her as his fingers hooked under her shirt to pull it up. "If it was Kain that did it, would you say the same thing?.." he asked curiously. He didn't know how her magic worked, he knew that it was incredible, that she was incredible, and he knew that it had an effect on her, he'd cared for her after she'd put Alec back together, and so it also frightened him.

Lexi dropped her hand and closed her eye, a small nod showing she agreed to his help. For a moment he seemed to be content to go about the job quietly though she could sense him working out the words to ask her something. She hadn't been sure she would like the question and when he finally did bring the subject up she settled on being sure she wouldn't like the conversation. She gave a soft sigh as his deft fingers worked her robes off and then pulled her shirt up and over her head.

"Probably," she opened her eye again and then gingerly removed the wad of fabric from her nose to examine just how much blood she was losing. She gave a slight grimace before replacing the handkerchief. "There is a price for all magic, a sad on your energy reserves. We learn to build those up and have a few to draw on. The sword holds my reserve," her hand motioned towards the large gem on the pommel. "When I gave it to you to use..." she hadn't been able to access it. "I had to draw on my energies - which are strong - but I came close to pushing those limits. Not as bad as with Alec though, nowhere near that bad. I promise," her fingers grazed his cheek slightly.

He listened without interrupting, but his jaw clenched as she explained and he fought the urge to scold her the way Aeleanora had done. He knew it wouldn't do him any favours. He left her for a moment to throw extra blankets onto the bed and pull back the covers before returning to her.

"Then that's my fault, lass. I'm sorry.." he muttered quietly. Cassian crouched slightly to lift her from her feet and lay her on the bed to remove her boots before hooking his fingers into her breeches and removing those too. He savoured the sight of her only for a moment before throwing the covers over her.

He hopped around as he pulled his sodden boots free of his feet, and he quickly tore at his wet clothes and hung them next to Lexi's before climbing under the covers with her to pull her close and get warm.

"Can't you draw on mine? Use it to heal you?.. I ent sure how it works.." he reached to brush her hair back from her face.

Lexi was used to people caring about her of course; Kain, the boys, Aeleanora in her weird way. Most if not all of the order in fact cared about her. But not like this. He was so gentle with her like she might break when really it was the other way around; if she forgot her strength she could hurt him badly and she had done so already. Still she didn't protest - couldn't protest what he offered her so sweetly - this man who had come into her life a broken thing and now dove into the depths of an ocean without a second thought for her.

His apology stung though. It wasn't his fault in the slightest, it was her own.

"It's not your -" she didn't get to protest much further as he lifted her back onto the bed and finished undressing her. Her lips pressed into a thin line but she didn't continue the thought, he must have known what it was she had been about to say. When he crawled in with her she wriggled into him and, pulling the eyepatch off, rested against him as best she could whilst still holding the wadding to her nose.

"I... can," but she sounded uneasy about it. "It is... a horrible feeling having someone take your energy though. It would be easier if you learnt the simple spells," it was a gentle tease as she lifted the tissues away. Finally it had stopped and she fisted them up and incinerated them in a small ball of flame.

He wasn't sorry about diving in after her, only that he might've gotten in her way for his own need to make sure he didn't lose her. He wasn't sure if it had been selfless or selfish, but he pushed the thought aside. She was here and she was alive, they both were.

His arm slipped under her neck and his arm wrapped around her whilst his other stroked at her damp, salty hair. He gave a deep sigh, content now that they were both safe and warming up. "I don' care, lass.. If you ever need to do that with me you do it, I can deal with that.." he frowned and pressed his lips to her head.

Cassian really didn't want to learn magic. Gods, he could hear his father's voice in his head. He'd hated magic more than Cassian had. But things were different now, he was far from home, and he wasn't just looking after himself anymore. He wanted to be able to help her if she needed him to, and if something happened to her that he could have prevented he'd never forgive himself for being so stubborn.

"Fine... I'll let you teach me." he groaned quietly.

Lexi couldn't let it go; he had no idea what he was offering to her. The magnitude of it. She sat up and put one of her hands on his chest, her hair falling around her face as she looked down at him. For a while she held his gaze and then looked to where her hand was. She began to drum her fingers across his skin. It was hard to think of the right words that might explain it to him and relate it to.

"You know when you you have... one of those horrific hangovers where you feel like your soul has departed your body and you wish for death?" she ran her fingers up to his cheek and then brushed her fingers through his hair. A small smile danced across her lips at the movement. "That's what it feels like when someone else uses your energies for their magic. I know, I know you say that you would be willing to allow that but," her face crumpled a little. She wouldn't be ok with it. Lexi had berated him for losing his cool when he had cut her cheek but she wasn't above these feelings for him and it was abundantly clear in that moment.

"I promise, just a little spell or two, I know you don't like it," her voice was strained. It would definitely make her feel a lot better to know he could do minor things like throw up a shield or heal someone.

His eyes followed her movement, and something in him melted at the simple touch of her hand on his chest. He smiled, and reached a hand to curl her hair around the back of her ear “Aye.. I know the feeling all too well..” he was an alcoholic, after all... “But I’ve dealt with far worse than a bad hangover, lass. If it ripped my lungs out of my arse I’d still tell you to do it.” he laughed quietly and caressed her cheek with his thumb.

“I won’t break...” he promised with a sigh. “But I’ll try to learn if it’ll help..” he rumbled and reached to pull her down against his chest to cage her in his arms and press his cheek against her head, the memory of her jumping into the sea still fresh on his mind. He squeezed tighter.

"I know you say that Cassian but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if it was me who did the breaking," her voice was a rough whisper against his chest where her cheek had fallen after he had pulled her down against him. Her eyes closed tightly, her throat was tight with emotion and it was hard to work words around them. "For these level of spells I would have taken a lot, if I took too much it could..." her whole body was tense despite the warmth of him and the comfort he brought her. She turned her head so that her face was pressed into the crook of his neck and she let out a shaky breath before kissing along the underside of his jaw. It went beyond the fears of losing a man as a Commander. Lexi of course would be heartbroken if she lost a man - Alec, Peter, Kain. But Cassian... her very insides rebelled against the very idea, twisting into a hard knot that made her feel physically sick.

"I can't do what you ask on this one occasion... I... I'm sorry."

He could feel how tense she was. The shaky breath against his neck... He remained quiet for a long moment, absently stroking at her back as he held her there..

“Aye...” he frowned gently and glanced down at her. “I get it, lass.” he rumbled softly. “It’s alrigh’.. just get some rest at least.”..He pulled the blankets tightly around her and sighed a kiss against her head.

“I got you.” he smiled.

Lexi couldn't believe just how sick the idea made her feel, how scared she was. Her heart was hammering against her chest and it wouldn't slow no matter how many breaths she took. His words were meant to soothe and they did a little but now she was dealing with the shock of how strong these emotions were. She said nothing in response to his words but when the blankets were pulled up around them she tucked the edge under her backside to truly burrito herself to him entirely.

It took a while for the tension to ease from her body but gradually it did, and so did her breathing grow gentler and deeper. After a while she was sound asleep with one arm splayed across his chest in a possessive manner.

He considered the possibility that Lexi had felt that same fear that he had. He felt her pulse against him and continued to stroke at her skin until it started to slow and she felt her tension ease as she gave in to sleep.

Cassian lay awake for hours, going over all that was on his mind as he watched her sleep the way he had after she’d healed Alec, as though afraid she’d have a fit or stop breathing. The thought of it cemented his decision to learn whatever she wanted to teach him.

He had intended on staying awake until she woke, though his eyes grew heavier until the sound of her calm breaths and the gentle rocking of the ship lulled him to sleep.

It was actually Aeleanora who ended up waking the pair up having let them sleep for the rest of the day and night. It was a light rapping that made Lexi's nose scrunch up as she mumbled something akin to go away, burying her face half into Cassian and half into the pillow. The knock was stronger and then finally there was some muffled conversation and the woman simply barged in.

"Get up, you need to eat - well hello," the purred eyeing up Cassian's exposed chest and stomach.

"I'm sorry I tried to stop he-" Alec had been seconds behind her and similarly stopped on seeing the state of dress of his Commander. Unlike Aeleanora he at least had the decency to go red. Lexi swore as she gripped at the blankets and pulled them up around her chest.

"Gods damnit Ellie - get out," she reached for a pillow as the other girl's grin widened. Both of them backed up though and ducked out as she threw the pillow. The Commander flopped back down and wiped a hand down her face. "I cannot wait for Oban... when I won't have someone barging in on me naked for once."

Cassian was in no way ready to wake up yet and he groaned in irritation at the knocking. His eyes squinted open as Aeleanora barged in and rather boldly let her eyes wander over him. He’d be lying if he said the woman didn’t frighten him a little. He was used to being shamelessly bold with women, but the other way around was intimidating as fuck and the attention made his skin warm..

He rubbed the sleep from his face and stretched, though seeing Alec stop dead he glanced over Lexi’s exposed skin and lifted his own pillow to throw it at the lad in tandem with Lexi’s. “Fuck, lad! Hide yer fuckin eyes!”

With a quiet laugh at Lexi’s words he leaned to bite gently at her shoulder.. “Except me, of course.. But aye, me too lass.” He grinned and peppered a few kisses against her chest and neck, mingling words in between each kiss.

“How- are- you- feeling?”

There was muffled exclamations from outside including a distinctively disappointed sound from Peter. Lexi wished for the bed to open her up and swallow her whole and she groaned into her hands which she didn't remove from her beetroot face. There was however a muffled laugh from inside them as Cassian's words and by the third kiss on her neck she lowered them to watch him with a half smile.

"Tired, but I think that's just my normal state of being now," she rolled onto her side so she was facing him, her cheek pressed against her arm and her other hand came up to brush a few strands of hair from his face. "I am starving though, I'm going to get some food. Do you want to eat in here or with the others?" she leaned into him and pressed a soft kiss to his lips before resting her forehead against his.

Cassian grinned and leaned into her hand with a sleepy sigh.. "I can sympathise. Soon you'll have a few days off, lass. Though.. I can't say I won't tire you out a little more.." he winked and groaned against her kiss. He'd never tire of those.

"Personally, I don't feel like leavin' this bed today, but I suppose, we gotta eat." he rolled onto his back to release her from his arms with a huff in protest..

As he rolled away she rolled on top of him, not willing just yet to let the warmth of him go. She made a throaty noise and looked at him with half lidded eyes and a playful smile. Clearly she had a lot more energy than when they had gone to bed a few hours ago.

"Well, you don't have to," she shifted the covers around her and then, after throwing him another mischievous smile, she began very slowly to kiss and bite her way down his body. Further, further, further until she disappeared beneath the covers altogether.

Only when he was sweating and panting and she was pretty sure he was unable to move even if he had wanted to did she slip her way out of the bed, throw on his shirt and her boots, then leave to go and get food. She wasn't gone long before she came back with two bowls of fish soup. After kicking off her boots she crawled back into bed and passed him a bowl.

"Everyone's in bed, long day, we have the night to ourselves."

Cassian's cheeks dimpled as he looked up at her, rumbling at the weight of her and the warmth of her bare skin against him.

That smile... Gods.

Was she?...She was.

Fuck.

Every bite and kiss seemed to burn and yet a trail of goosebumps were left in their wake, his stomach muscles twitching and his jaw clenching as he watched her kiss until she disappeared.

He hadn't moved by the time she returned, he stared at the ceiling, one hand on his chest, the other's fingers raked into his hair and his heart still thundering in his chest.

Cassian looked up and his eyes followed her as she walked to the bed. He had yet to see a better outfit on her than this one, his white shirt that drowned over her soft, tanned skin. He groaned at just how addicted to her he really was.

He sat up to take the bowl, but before saying anything else his hand cupped at the side of her face to draw her in to a long, soft kiss. "I'm sure we can damage a little more of Mitch's ship before the night is through.." he mused and spooned out a mouthful of soup.

Lexi had been about to put the spoon in her mouth when he cupped her face and pulled her to his lips. It clattered back into her bowl forgotten as they kissed and she moaned his name softly against his mouth. When he let her go to attend to his own food she laughed at his musings and picked up her spoon once again to do likewise.

"That serpent destroyed the bit of the ship we wrecked by some miracle, I have no intentions of destroying anymore that man scares me," there was no sarcasm or joking tone to her voice as she finally put a spoonful of the soup in to her mouth and swallowed with a content sigh. She had been starving. Aeleanor had woken them at the right time ti seemed. "He was actually the man who taught my parents everything they know. He retired and became a captain around when I was born."
