Quest Totally Legal Deals

Organization specific roleplay for governments, guilds, adventure groups, or anything similar
Kala stood up just as quickly as Kara, except she took three swifts back and slipped her hand into the satchel on the small of her back.

A single card was dragged free from it, held between her index and middle finger as she stared at the figure just ahead of her. The length of her ear twitched, and she couldn't help but recount the mans words inside of her head.

Golden eyes briefly flickered towards Kara.

Had someone followed her?

Kala knew for sure that no one had trailed her, but Kara was just a mage. What did she know about tradecraft and the like? Her fingers pressed a little tighter, and she cast a glance back towards the way that she had come to make sure no one was boxing her in.

"I already have my favor." Kala commented.

Nicodemus' plan to keep the tone of the conversation and meeting light and professional hadn’t worked as well as the sorcerer had hoped. Even forcing a somewhat friendly tone and calling them friends had failed to make much impact. The one with the rod reacted first, letting go of it, unsheathing and then pointing a sword towards Nicodemus. It wasn’t the first time he had been at the wrong end of a blade, so he didn’t move. But this one looked like a particularly nasty piece of work judging by the runes and its wielder tone of voice.

He wasn’t sure about the runes function, he’d need a closer look and his glasses for that. Even so chances were that it’d do a lot more than sting and he mentally patted himself on the back for not having moved closer to the fire. At this range he still had a lot of options, both with his own items and calling in the hired thugs.

However he refused to believe that the negotiations had already broken beyond mending. A bit of pushback was only to be expected. He wanted the Heart of Trill, but not at any cost.

“I’m not here for a fight”. Nicodemus responded, his hands still open and spread. It didn't’ really impact his readiness to fight, but he hoped the gesture would deescalate the situation. Only plebs fought with swords and their own two hands.

“Already got your favour, huh? I’ve never heard anybody complaining about being owed too many favours. But fair enough.” He said to the second of the duo, her eyes flickering around, her hands clutching a card? Seemingly weighing her options. “This isn’t an ambush or robbery.” The sorcerer said with a small sigh, how he wished they had been easier to track down earlier. Then he could have approached them at a place and time of his own choosing, a dark and mostly empty dock was hardly the best scenery for making new business acquaintances.

”I take it you’ve already exchanged the artifact then. How about you?” Nicodemus said nodding towards the woman with the wicked sword. “You clearly have knowledge of the arts and an eye for magical artifacts. Would you be open for negotiations?” Let none say Nicodemus didn't do his best to accommodating.

Nicodemis failed to give an identity. And, he suspiciously denied this was an attempt at robbery or ambush without prompt.

Kara disapproves.

As a result, Kara twisted her runic sword and took a two handed grasp. She shifted into a stance as if she pretended to be one of those Dreadlord battlemages.

The illuminated runes surged in radiance for a moment. With hissing, several runes appeared to spontaneously materialize in the ground leading to the yard's gate. The prominent symbols those runes were "light" and "sound". They did not activate.

"You're on private property," Kara declared, "Leave."

If one researched this specific yard beforehand, they would discover that the Cairou River Trading Company possessed it. Kara never told Kala whether she had the ability to act on behalf of the trading company. If she could, the two need not fear the night watch being alerted unlike those that would be charged as trespassers.

Kala wasn't one to waste an opportunity. Not when one had quite literally walked in on the situation with her.

She was still weary of course. A thief like her didn't live long by trusting every Dick and Daisy that wanted something she had. At the end of the day though she did this for money, and here was an opportunity for more money staring her directly in the face.

Helping Kasimir had been personal, but that didn't mean she was done stealing. "Listen."

She offered quietly.

"This deal is spoken for." Kala gestured between herself and Kara. "But I have a few other things up my sleeve."

Or rather, back at the hideout in the Underground. She wasn't about to walk back on the deal she made with Kara, but opportunity for the future was always more than welcome. She had to make a profit somehow. "There's no need for violence. I have enough...wares to go around."

She was sounding like a merchant.

Sometimes diplomacy didn’t work, it was important to remember that it wasn’t your fault that the other party refused reasonable terms. That was their shortcomings, not yours Nicodemus reminded himself.

The sorcerer didn’t know who owned this part of the dock, he hadn’t really cared. It was most likely in the notes his associate had provided, but there hadn’t been time to read all of it. As such the girl might very well be right that he was trespassing, which meant unless she was lying that she was if not working with the owners then at least known to them.

Interesting, he filled that away for later. Always good to have another avenue to finding her again, should he be unable to get the prize he had come for this night. Which seemed more and more likely as she escalated her earlier aggressive stance even more. Now she had dipped fully into the theatrics pool, trying to scare him off? It might have worked on lesser men. The uninitiated or ignorant, but not him he seen far deadlier works of magic. He was a sorcerer of Elbion and was made of sterner stuff.

His medallion shaking more urgently underneath his coat in response. The entity within itching for a fight, it always did, any chance to be loose was welcome, he could feel it at the edge of his mind. Circeling, ready to leap if he let it, but he didn’t. Its presence a known factor and easily ignored.

“I see.” Nicodemus responded as he considered turning the whole thing into a robbery after all. He was reasonably certain he could, if push come to shove deal with them both, at the very least until the rest of his hired thugs could get there. The entity gave a pulse of excitement at his thought. It all came down to if it would get him the Heart. He had no solid proof they had brought it with them. They could very well have reached an agreement to deliver it at a later date.

Meaning he’d start a potential lethal fight for uncertain gains. His eyes taking a quick glance at the squared wooden board by the fire. It was clearly a part of their deal so securing it could be a way to gain leverage.

Was it worth the risk though? That was the question the sorcerer contemplated. Her stance was reminiscent of what he had seen Dreadlord apprentices use, it was enough to make him pause. His assessment of the situation changing, was she working with them? If so he might just have stumbled into something a lot bigger. More risky, but potentially also more rewarding. Perhaps a retreat would be the best course of action for now, when he knew more about the woman he could negotiate from a position of strength.

“ I’m sorry we could not reach an agreement this evening.” Nicodemus said his hand moving towards his coat pocket before freezing. Not wanting to cause a misunderstanding he quickly continued “I’m getting a business card from my left breast pocket” before proceeding to pull it out and placing it on a crate to his side. “When either of you want to take things a bit more seriously and stop with the theater. This card has the name of an associate that know how to reach me. Good evening to you both.” He didn't turn his back on the duo as he started to back away in the direction he had come from.

Kara kept her eyes on Nicodemus until the figure disappeared into the darkness. Her stance relaxed as she approached the crate with the business card. She then looked to the card and attempted to commit its writing to memory. She would then pick it up and offer it to Kala.

With that settled, Kara walked back to the fire pit. She kept glancing back for any signs of Nicodemus.

The runes on her sword ceased to glow. The runes that manifested in the dirt remained.

Grabbing the metal rod with one hand while her sword was in the other, Kara yanked it out. The end that was in the fire was just as a brand with an elaborate design.

"Let's be brief," Kara told Kala, "I'll explain this once. Ask questions if confused."

Kala watched the man with narrowed eyes, frowning as he slowly backed off into the darkness of the alleyway. Her gaze flickered quickly towards the card that he had deposited, and before Kara spoke she tied over to it and gently scooped it up.

It played in her hands for a moment, and then she slipped it into her sleeve.

With another two steps Kala took her position opposite Kara once more. Her eyes caught to the fire and then slowly panned up towards the mage. "Will do."

The Tiefling said with a shrug.

She was sure that there would be many. Most of her own magics had been learned through trial and error. Kala had never once in her life been taught to do anything. She had always learned by doing and trying rather than observing.

Still, she'd gotten herself Into this and so she would follow through.

Then find that other man and try to make a little gold.

No sign of Nicodemus. Kara continued with the demonstration.

This will seem cruel,” Kara told Kala, “But this is the simplest way to free your friend.

As part of the lesson, Kara took what was essentially a brand and pressed it upon the wood board. She applied firm pressure as hissing filled the air. After a few seconds, she released her grip of the brand.

You have to apply this mark to his back,” Kara said as she sheathed her sword.

Then, Kara picked the brand up once again. A rune-like pattern was now burned to the wood. She tapped the board with her foot so that it slid to Kala.

The pattern on the board was simple compared to Kasimir’s brand. Still complex, but nothing like the work of insidious art known as the Forsaken’s Brand.

The brand in Kara’s arm likely cost quite a bit to have manufactured in two weeks. It definitely was not cheap…

And this is the first step,” Kara said.

"Well that's easy enough." Kala commented with a frown, though she suspected that Kara was about to tell her there would be many more hoops to jump through before she actually could free Kasimir.

In her head she was already preparing a plan on how to actually get the brand on the Forsaken.

It didn't seem likely that he would volunteer. More likely she would have to catch him by surprise somehow. Kala very much doubted that she could take the man in a straight up fight, particularly with his magical gifts active.

Her lips thinned. "What's next?"

She asked curiously.

As Kala spoke, Kara touched the hilt of her sword with her free hand. Magic activated and a simple rune materialized on the ground beneath the brand in her other hand. A small poof of wind followed.

Kara then gingerly touched the tip of the brand to verify its temperature had been reduced. Then, she sat the brand down.

With her hands empty, Kara held out her left hand palm up and shaped her right as if she was to perform a karate chop.

"Then, take a knife and," she began.

Silently, Kara then performed a slicing motion with her right hand over the palm of her left.

"Then press your hand on the new mark and activate magic," Kara instructed as she motioned her left hand as if she pressed it down in something in the air.

Kala stared blankly for a moment, then slowly spoke. "Wait."

Her eyes narrowed at Kara's palm.

"Is this blood magic?" She didn't really have anything against the practice, in fact there was a Blood Mage in the Reesh Reckoners. Kala didn't really like the man, he sort of had a habit of spitting on the ground in front of him.

It was disgusting. Her worry came in the idea of using her own life force for this sort of magic. If it would drain her of her own powers then freeing Kasimir would become even more dangerous.

She couldn't have that.

Kala had to say the BM word.

But the fact was, the design of Kara's brand alone would likely leave Kasimir a vegetable. Blood would compensate for the lack of power behind the rune.

"Magic has a price," Kara told Kala.

A phrase drilled into mages with formal education.

"In this case," Kara continued, "It would only be to the point of feeling anemic. A hearty meal and rest would remedy that."

The idea didn't really bother her, it was just the mechanics that she found somewhat concerning.

If she did this and the Rune ended up not working Kasimir would simply turn around and stab her straight through the stomach. He wouldn't want to...at least she was pretty sure, but the Rune would force him to do it.

That didn't sit well with her. "This changes my plan."

She said softly.

"But doesn't stop it." A breath filled her lungs. "I suppose you'll be wanting payment now?"

Or was there even more?

"Yes, that's it," Kara said as she picked up the brand.

"One thing though," Kara continued, "It's best to attempt this somewhere safe. If possible."

Though that probably did not need to be stated to Kala.

Kara then waited to see what Kala would pull out. If it was what she would know as the Heart of Trill, she would offer the brand for it.

If not, then Kala would recieve a lesson in how Elbion values even verbal contacts...

She had an idea for where that safe place would be, but getting Kasimir there was a problem she hadn't quite yet figured out. Her lips thinned, and she slowly nodded as she reached into her satchel once more.

The card she had earlier retrieved was replaced, and a new one was quietly retrieved. Kala held it with one hand, and then touched the front of it with her index and thumb. There was an odd swirling blackness that erupted from the card, a miniature vortex slowly appeared just above the blank white paper, and from it Kala pulled the Heart of Trill.

It was a pretty piece of jewelry. A gem nearly the size of an eyeball set in gold and rimmed with half a dozen emeralds at it's top.

As soon as the necklace was freed from the card she swung it once or twice, shrugging her shoulders and looking over at Kara. "Heart of Trill."

Kala still had absolutely no idea what the damned thing even did, but she didn't rightly care. It would have fetched her a pretty penny, but freeing Red was worth more than a few pieces of coin. With all the weariness she could muster Kala quickly reached out and traded the necklace for the brand before taking a quick two steps back.

Trust still didn't come easy to her.

"So…" Kala said blankly. "Anything else you want?"

It was always easier to steal more targeted things than nab something only might be magical.

Kara saw the card trick with wide eyes and whispered, "Wow, neat."

Taking the Heart of Trill in her hand, Kara examined the necklace. She then dropped it into a pouch on front of her that was strapped to her belt.

In response to Kala's question, Kara went, "Eh. Not at the moment. It looks like you have a chance to expand your clientele."

A pause. Then, Kara added, "But since you're going toward Vel Anir hearing some news of current events would be nice next time we meet."

Kara then pinched her fingers to make the $$$MONEY$$$ gesture - a sign she would be willing to pay for this.

She shrugged. "Suit yourself."

Kala didn't really like selling information. Gathering it wasn't always easy, and more often than not the wrong tidbit could be even more deadly than whatever she ended up stealing. Most people valued information more than a bit of gold.

Especially on Vel Anir.

Yet if all Kara wanted was rumors and goings on? That was easy enough. Anyone could gather that, it just mattered how fast they could actually get it to where it needed to go.

"I'll be in touch after my trip." Kala told the mage as she took a step back and began to leave, tapping her pocket to ensure she still had the other mages card.

That would come in handy.

"Stay safe, and good luck," Kara said.

Once Kala began to disappear, Kara got to work on cleaning up. She picked up the board she used to demonstrate the brand and tossed it into the fire. Once that was ash, she would put out the fire and leave - keeping an eye out for Nicodemus.

Kara forgot to mention several things that she genuinely thought would not matter. One was that Kasimer would also pay the blood price - mostly as an effort to keep Kala from being killed. The effect would be that Kasimer could also feel anemic after the runr was activated.

Another was that any wrong step - applying the brand weakly, a broken brand, or not using blood could spell the end for Kasimer. At least, as a functional bring.

And finally, Kara did not go into the details of what the brand actually did. To be exact, it would attempt to undo any scars, tattoos, and blemishes on Kasimer. Basically, an extreme way to reverse aging of the skin.

Not knowing how many scars Kasimer may have, Kara designed the brand so that it would prioritize anything with a magical effect. Kara would have no way of knowing that Kasimer had magical tattoos of his own or how the rune would react to it...
