The night was steeped in the moon's glow when a rider clad in a black gown emerged into a clearing in a distant wood far from any settlement. The familiar trappings of the darkness were all present: chirp of cricket and hoot of owl punctuated the unsure hoof-steps of the horse that carried aloft the witch. Every so often she would reach down, give the beast a reassuring pat, even though her own heart thundered in her chest as they grew closer to her intended destination. There was a great strangeness to this place: taller trees, thicker brush, and without the light of the moon and the little moonlight she had hovering around her own head, the forest would have been impenetrably dark. Yet onward she pressed, her eyes full of grim purpose, with faint blues reflecting the tentative light in her irises.

Years had passed since the first seal had opened. The heat had been unbearable, and the great elemental flame which sprouted from the seal had nearly claimed her life. She remembered the mage who had helped her then, whom had only illuminated her own weaknesses in that terrible battle. For Elle's entire life, she had resigned herself to the knowledge that someday she would die, and calamity would strike the world. That day had given her hope. But rather than seek the other seals, she instead sought to finally control the latent magical energies that resided within her. No longer a scared girl of 23, but a practiced mage of 30 due to intense training at a magical school in Alliria, her confidence was higher than ever. Yet even with this, as she grew nearer to the inexorable pull of the Second Seal, she was fraught with that same worry again. For what if it had not been enough?

After all, she had found no lover and had given birth to no child. Without a child, the cycle of sacrifice at the age of 40 would end. And so too would the world, at the behest of the very patron who gave her her power.

Her eyes flicked as a large glow appeared through the brush in the distance. She turned the horse quickly as she felt the magic begin to swell in the very air around her. The seal was going to break. All those sensitive to magic, or even just those making passage in the night would see or sense the great occurrence that was about to unfold. For the Second Seal, the Seal of Earth, was about to open, and its manifestation would begin wreaking havoc upon the world.

The witch steeled herself as she reached the edge of a small ridge, a rise in the terrain that allowed her to see into a valley where the glow was emanating from. There was one other lesson she had learned from that peculiar mage then, too: this fight was not one she had to bear alone. The witch held her hands together, swirling them around in front of her until a bright ball of light materialized, floating between the palms of her hands. Whispering, she raised her hands; the ball of light shot into the air, gaining in brightness and appearing as though one of the stars itself had just landed upon the area. Then, she lifted a hand to the gusting wind, whispering a plea into it that any passing by would hear:

A terrible evil awakens this night. If you wish to protect this land, then meet me at the star's light...

With the message upon the wind, Elle turned the horse back around to face the valley again where the Seal lay. Quietly, she prayed in her heart that this would not be a fight she would have to suffer alone...
