Maraan
Teal Shadow Tavern
Midday

Riding from the west was a simple feet in the world that the Empire had built. It was a complicated world made all the less complicated in the image of the Empire. Unified and strong. The roads were safer and the banditry, while still a part of any ride, was now kept to a minimum. Unless they were paying bribes, which essentially brought them in as part of the Imperial beaurocracy, than they had only to wait for the Empire to visit their den and root out the weeds.

Ralian Thorpe had not ridden alone, rather he had attached himself to a trader convoy that made its way to the eastern trade city of Maraan, where he had come to spread the word.
The Empire possessed many tools. Most were incredible and violent. But others were a bit more subtle. A drink bought here, and a kind deed done there allowed the message of unity to reach the barbarians abroad in ways that could make them more willing to see reason... rather than be later visited by the sword.

It was an Imperial Warrant that gave him license to do this. He charged recruits to seek out a garrison and enlist in the Empires service. He met with local leaders to open new trade routes. He garnered support with fine folk to allow for simpler dealings when Imperial legions marched East.
Was he well known for this work? Not at all. He was far from famous. But to carry the Imperial Warrant was respectable. It was his experience in the field and with the Empire that allowed him to do that work, and it was his nature to ramble on that made the work easy.
But the Ralian was here in the beautifully middling tavern that nestled near the edge of the city of Maraan. A place where traders from around the world could meet for a simple drink, trade stories from the word, and give gossip.
That was what Ralian sought. Gossip and words from the East so that he could better spread that word of the Empire and perhaps engage in delightful political debate to help others see reason.. and he kept his sword handy in case reason was not what was sought.
He approached the bar, ordered a beer, and graciously smiled with the call. "Unity and honor." a call of the Empire... loud enough to hope someone heard it.
