Coasting over white sands at breakneck speed, the polished wooden board sped through the trough of dune after dune. Weaving out his wild path, the young man balancing atop the thing screamed as he sped along. “Come on! Let’s go!”
A surge of power pulsed in Nahir’s stomach, his Sahu working overtime. As his elemental center spun up to full throttle, the sand under his board propelled him straight up the side of a dune, launching him into the air. For a few blissful moments, he was flying, framed by the quickly setting sun overhead. Then he was falling, and then he was crashing down into the pristine sands, the edge of his board cutting back and forth, a huge plume of sand spraying up as he fought to regain control, then sped off again. “Ha! Flawless!”
It was always hard to resist shouting nonsense when sandsurfing. How his people had ever allowed the practice to fade into obscurity was beyond him. There was no better way to practice fine control of elemental forces. Besides, it was almost stupid how fun it was.
Maybe it was the wind howling in his ears, or maybe it was the unsafe speed, but Nahir was suddenly aware of a keening cry in his ears. Turning his board towards the noise, he slowed enough to casually glide along, until he found himself circling one sand dune again and again.
Hopping off his board, he focused his Sahu to search through the sand around him with his Id. There it was… what in the world? His hand outstretched, he focused for a few moments, which turned into a full minute. This was harder than it looked. He had lots of practice pushing a board around, but pulling out buried objects could be tricky.
And then it surfaced, buoyed up by a tiny sand geyser. He crouched, scooping it up and wincing as the wailing grew louder. But the sound wasn’t in his ears. It was in his skin, running along the length of his arms and the back of his neck. His Ko. Holding the flask up to the evening light, the once-a-prince chuckled. “What exactly are you?”
