Designation

Mardus is considered a fortress city. All at once a bastion of protection and a center of commerce for the majority of Mardania.

For the giants who built it, it would have been a military holding, but it's size for the new inhabitants accommodate a large variety of enterprises, both state and private.

Description

Architecture

The city is... Massive... To put it lightly.
It was built by and for giants and its construction reflects this, each house is truly large enough to house a family of giants, and now they serve as housing for entire communities of normal sized humanoids that have made the city their home.
The entire city was designed to accommodate giants in an 18 to 21 foot range of height.
An average house in the city might span 180 feet wide, long and high.
A giants mansion might span upwards of around 400 feet wide, long and high and could support a substantial population of its own.

Smaller humanoid races have built their own dwellings amid these titanic structures and each giants house provides shelter to entire town or city sized communities.
Due to it's comparatively small population, however, only less than an eighth of the city is in use.

Horses and carriages are required to reach anywhere in the city in any sort of haste. The use of messenger birds are common, and those who can afford it appreciate the utility of magical communication.

Roads and Alleyways range from 45 feet to 90 feet wide.
A highway is 100 feet wide.

The entire city is made of a super strong material called Dracontine Glass. Knowledge of it's creation and use are a safely guarded national secret.
The walls are virtually un-scalable due to the sheer smooth surface of the walls and their immense height.
Each wall is around 90 feet thick and 800 feet tall, and proportionally thicker and taller at the towers, enough to accommodate an army of giants and their siege equipment.
Five giants could walk abreast along the length of the walls and fight in formation, the bases for their siege equipment are wide flat courts that span a 180 foot radius.

Now inhabited by smaller humanoids, they ride cavalry regiments along the walls and use ladders and constructed rigging to access the battlements, towers and siege equipment, as well as to traverse the giant steps and staircases.
Due to the smooth surface of the walls, the horses hooves and soldiers feet are shod with a special shoe that keeps their footing on the slick surface during inclement conditions.

(The style of the houses and buildings reflects a common western European influence)

Points of Interest

The seat of government for the entire country of Mardania and the first thing travelers see as they approach the city, it's glittering towers are almost blinding to look upon and they extend high above the city to touch the clouds.
It is named thus because of the way the Dracontine Glass structure bends the light to cast rainbow colors both inside and around the castle grounds.

Visitors often make it a point to make the long pilgrimage to see the castle itself.
Is a military academy dedicated to martial training.
It is here that the Knights of Mardus were born and where they are propagated. Students who attend this college either do so to join the military or to fulfill the martial obligations of their family.
Is a university of the finer things. From STEM fields to magical training and research to advanced politics and higher noble etiquette.
The school of Script is an exclusive institution for higher learning, and thus require steep tuitions to attend.

Nobility often send their children to the finishing school here to teach them skills of refinement and nobility, to hone their courtly abilities and to make friends and allies amongst the other higher class students.
Some who show an aptitude are also sent here to study under the professors who dedicate their tenure to the study and research of magic.
The first of the three walls and the first ring of the city.
Named after King Zerkalo Kyxo who held that wall during his long reign against all odds.
This wall is the uncontested bulwark of Mardus, the unassailable wall that keeps its enemies at bey. It is the second thing travelers see when they approach the city, and it is truly awesome to gaze upon.
The second of the three walls and second ring of the city.
Named after the renowned Princess Kathréftis Kyxo, where she delivered a speech which guaranteed that upon her ascension to the throne slavery would be completely abolished in Mardania.
The third of the three walls and third ring of the city.
Named after the royal sorcerer Spiegel Peligrade, who stood atop this wall and single handedly turned back an entire invading force with a single spell.

History

It is said that the capital city, Mardus, used to be a city in the sky built by cloud giants but was rebuilt on the ground and into the side of the mountain after its cataclysmic fall thousands of years ago. It's unknown whether this story is true, but the sheer size and capacity could certainly accommodate a population of giants if it didn't currently house thousands of humans and humanoid races.
This city is what's known as the capital of the nation of Mardania that was founded a long time ago, built up around this magnificent city, and brought under the monarchical rule by the ancient Kyxo family ancestors.

Now as a nation it spans far outside of the city walls, over several kingdoms and many towns and villages that grew up alongside their country, as each new king of the Kyxo line seemed to take what the previous king left and made it better.

The nation of Mardania was built around the city of Mardus as it's bastion of protection and center of commerce.

Background

Hundreds of years ago, Mardus was a city built by Cloud Giants as a fortress against others of their kind, a place where giant kind could come together under one banner and live as civilized people separate from their more brutal cousins in a virtual paradise.

Back in those days, the Cloud Giants were renowned as expert craftsmen, able to create weapons and armor of such legendary ability as to invoke bard tales and songs. So they gathered together to create a city in which a giant could defend themselves from atop a wall the same as the small humanoids did in their cities.

The very first problem they faced was a lack of materials, stone was a good weapon for a giant, but flimsy when it came to an enduring construct which a giant could use. Experimentation produced a transmuted substance based off of sand melted into glass. There was always enough sand to use and they harvested copious amounts of it to be melted into glass, transmuted and shaped into the walls and buildings of the city.

Lore

Scholars still speculate on whether the city actually fell from the sky or whether it was built in it's current location. Investigations into the question have produced evidence for both arguments, many prefer to believe that it actually did survive a cataclysmic fall which would explain the disappearance of the giant population.
