Winter had finally arrived and tables and chairs had been set up inside a large white tent. The Knights had a serious problem on their hands: Syr Cymbeline had tried out a new spell and unfortunately brought a gingerbread cookie to sentient life. It said its name was Ginger, Ginger Breadington, and if it were to be alive (it had never asked to be alive! Or eaten, so don’t get any ideas!) then it deserved a home. Ginger hated the design forced upon its being by Syr Cymbeline, that fool! How dare she give them a misshapen scarf, mismatched gumdrop buttons, and a ugly pair of icing boots that had clearly been smeared.

All who could were called to help: to build a home for Ginger Breadington that they could live in until the magic wore off or they died from old age and mold. The judge would be Ginger themselves, and the winner would receive their praise— and maybe a little something else.

Sivan was there because he had to be, not because he wanted to. He looked at the tables that had all the supplies they would need: candy and icing and gingerbread cut in so many ways. Everyone could take what they needed, or more, but at the end of one hour, all the houses would be judged whether they were ready or not.

Rules of the Competition:
  • Characters can build a gingerbread house by themselves or with a partner.
  • There will be four rounds:
    • First Round: having all walls stand up, +1 point
    • Second Round: putting the roof on, +1 point
    • Third Round: decorating, no smeared icing, candy looks good, +1 point
    • Fourth Round: if the house remains standing when being carried to the judging table, +1 point
  • Winner will be chosen by highest point score; if there is a tie, a coin will be flipped.
  • For single-competitors: roll 1d20, for for team-competitors: one person will be chosen to roll 1d20. The goal is to get a higher number than what the DM rolled for that round.
  • Each character can have any buffs/debuffs that fits their personality. There is no set limit currently on how many you can have. Please list the buff/debuff chosen in your first post.

It was all, rather tragic really.

The inception of Ginger, and the task that set before them. As cheerful as it was to bake gingerbread, and construct the little home, well. A tiny being had been brought to life, only for them to await the loss of the magic that sustained them. Or for rot to set in.

Maybe that's why, Roki felt so compelled to try his best.

With a huff and a nod, Roki looked to his partner, a newer squire by the name of... "Hey, what's your name again?" he asked the pale human with the ashen black hair. "I'm Roki, by the way," he introduced himself with a tusked tooth grin.

He had been away from the Monastery for some time. The winter holidays giving him some time to return from his... assignment afield.

They ought to give Ginger a good home, no? At least, that was the driving force for Haelyn as she took a seat and looked at the pieces before her. Should she go simple? Should she perhaps put in the effort of making a grand home for the duration of the life of Ginger Breadington?

Alone, Haelyn began to plan her idea.

"Oh, hi! My name's Nacht." He'd return without a moment of hesitation. It was always nice to interact with fellow squires, and Nacht had immediately chosen Roki as a nice potential partner for a reason: The guy cooked. Cooking was really really hard and required a good attention to detail, or at least it had been when Nacht last tried (and failed) at it.

"Glad to meet you, Roki. I have a feeling we'll make a great team!" He'd say, flashing a toothy grin in return. Truthfully, he was a little scared. He had never really spent the winter season with anyone other than his family, so this cheery competition made to house a doomed gingerbread man made him a bit nervous. What if I screw it all up? Just then, he realized he hadn't seen the half-orc around much regularly. "I actually haven't seen you much before..that must mean that..." His eyes became a bit more sparkly as he continued, "Do you have missions and stuff?"

Roki looked about while Nacht said his how-do-you-dos. Brow's raised with curiosity as his head swiveled quick, one way, then the other. Sivan was easy business, he was sure about that. Haelyn, his eyes squint at the site of her. She was a mystery. Calm and contemplative. He squint his eyes at her.

Do you have missions and stuff?

"
Hmm?" his eyes came back to his fellow squire. His teammate. Nacht. "Missions?" he parroted. Nod nod. Grinned. "Yeah, we can call it that," he said as he nod. Not like he wanted to get into it all when there was a competition to be won.

He showed the young man his hand, bladed and straight, almost as if he were starting a bout. A spark in his eye. "Alright, Nacht," he said, clear and confident. Nod. His fingers clenched quick into a tight fist that trembled with excitement. "I've got a reputation to maintain, and you've got a reputation to build!" he said with a fire in his voice. Pumped his fist. "Let's win this thing!"

He looked down at the assortment of materials. Gingerbread sheets, icing, gumdrops, sprinkles, hard candies and confections. A grin crept across his lips. His eyes grew twice as wide. "I got this!" he said, and thrust a hand out to ward the other squire off.

In a whirlwind of motion, the squire put together the walls, glued them down with the frosting and, at last, willed a bright flame at his fingertips. Turned it to a focused stream that hissed with potency. No longer than a good wick, but, it scorched.

Singed the edges of the gingerbread, bubbled the frosting. His grin turned wider, his eyes all the larger as the little construction withstood the spewing spout of fire that blazed from the end of his pointed digit.

Maybe he was going a little too far. But he was too excited to notice.

Nacht

Nacht watched as Roki pushed him aside, stunned but willing to allow his senior within the squire ranks to show him how the building process worked. A smile began to form, and he clapped Roki on the back when he had finished placing the walls. "Nicely done. I think you're a bit of a madman, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I have to do something to help, though, so perhaps calm yourself a tad?" He'd say, eyeing the last two pieces of gingerbread, the ones to make the roof. Hopefully this goes well. I've never really given myself expectations to surpass before, but there's a first time for everything, I guess.

Haelyn was particularly proud of how patient she was in getting the walls to stand upright. She had read a cookbook once on festive recipes, and there had been a tip on how to get the icing to stick better and keep the walls in tact. It had proved useful in this case, and even with impatient hands, Haels got the job done.

The four walls held up nicely, and the squire leaned back triumphant in her endeavour.

Sivan tried to make his walls stand up straight, and it seemed like they would until he realized that very, very slowly it seemed like the walls were caving in. He tried to straighten them back up, but the frosting smeared. Sivan unsuccessfully added more frosting, pulling the walls apart so to make the task easier, but when he pressed them back together they stood up worse than they had before.

He waited a minute, then two. One wall fell forward and cracked. Sivan sighed, adding more frosting and hoping that it wouldn’t ruin his chances of having the roof hold up.

[roll to beat for a successful roof is 8]

Roki had almost grabbed up the roof, but then the new kid said something. "Wha, oh... um, right," he laughed. Nodded, and stepped back. Hovered just behind him. Peeked over his shoulder as he moved to grab things and make his adjustment. "Just be careful, the walls are extra crispy, and, while I think that adds a cool scorch effect that Breadington might find artsy... It... does kinda make the walls a little more, well," a nervous laugh. "Brittle," he smiled wide and toothy. Gave him two thumbs up. "You got this though, Nacht, yeah!" he gave a nod and nod.

“Thanks.” He’d say, switching places with his senior and observing the pieces of roof from the table and looking thoughtfully at the house. Roki had done a good job building the house’s walls, however many artistic liberties he had taken by turning his finger into a spike of fire. Right, so most of the pieces will make a good roof if I can work them well. It was true, given there were two small triangles and two flat squares presumably to go on top of them.

Using a fair amount of frosting and patience, he managed to set up a sturdy roof without cracking the walls. It was nothing flashy, but he was pretty sure that wasn’t what people wanted from a roof. “Not too impressive, but it’s staying up.” He’d say, maybe a bit too humbly for how hard he had worked to make the entire thing function. He’d turn back to Roki, his eyes bright.

“Thanks for the encouragement, though! That was nice.” He’d say, returning Roki’s grin with a boyish one of his own and brandishing a single thumbs up. “Hey, maybe we could work together on each challenge. That’d probably be mutually less…boring, I guess.”

Haelyn put her blinders on and focused on the work ahead of her. She was getting the hang of this now.

The squire lined the edges of her walls with icing, letting it set a moment before carefully placing one side of the roof and then the other. Careful and with precision, Haelyn lined her edges with the binding component to make it look neater for decoration later. There had been extra pieces in her kit that had broken, perhaps spare parts if she needed it, but Haelyn worked some magic and created a chimney for Ginger Breadington.

How quaint!

Everyone would be able to hear the pieces of Sivan’s roof and walls falling down. He huffed and then sighed deeply when he went to pick up his gingerbread pieces to find that another one of the walls had cracked. He muttered curses under his breath when half of the roof was also cracked. Everyone would get to start decorating now, there was soft gumdrops, hard candies, pieces of chocolate both dark and white, and edible dyes.

Sivan looked around, watching Squire Ulrika draw doors and windows with icing. He looked over to Squire Ketyl and Squire Winnika, giggling together and blushing as they made a pattern on their stable roof with the gumdrops and hard candies. He then turned his head to see Squire Nacht and Squire Roki, but wasn’t surprised with their progress. When he looked further, he could see Squire Haelyn, the brooding grump… but, her house was still standing up as well.

Well who said he had to make a traditional gingerbread house?! Maybe Ginger Breadington would like something unique and abstract. All that mattered now was the decorating!

[roll higher than a 12 to decorate the house without having the house fall down. Feel free to describe the gingerbread house decorations!]
