Hunting was fun. It took one's mind off of things save for what they were doing right then and there, it gave him focus. And on top of that it brought food back to the pack. He and his pack had recently ousted human settlers in the Falwood, with the help of a few human mercenaries, and had even learned the art of cooking from one of them, now they only ever ate cooked meat unless they couldn't start a fire. With such improvements in the way they did things they began to grow, slowly, but they grew nonetheless.

Baraek hesitated a moment, and sniffed the air once, then a second time, and continued along the trail left behind by their quarry. It was a large buck they hunted, majestic and white, almost as big as they were, and that was no mean feat. So he hunted, alone. It was strange for a wolf to hunt alone, wolves always preferred to be with their pack. Only he needed a little bit of time alone, he and the alpha had been quarrelling more frequently, it hadn't come to blows just yet but that was the inevitable conclusion that everyone foresaw.

He stopped, and sniffed the air again. Another scent, not a deer, no. A wolf, but not one of theirs. He forgot about the buck, he needed to know what this was. Intruders would not be tolerated. He crept through the forested landscape, coming ever closer to the intruder, being certain to stay downwind of them so that they were less likely to catch his scent. He spied her, he couldn't make out much detail from where he was but he could tell that she was fellow wolf-kin like himself, though she was not of their pack, so suspicion was on her.

Normally he used his swords, he had them on him at the moment too, but right now his bow was better. He withdrew an arrow and pulled back on the string. He made ready to fire, though he wouldn't kill her just yet, not until he was certain she was a threat.

Seph lowered herself to the small stream to get a drink. She had scanned the area and scented but had not sensed anything dangerous. She cupped her hands before dipping them into the water and bringing them to her ebony muzzle. She buried her muzzle into the pool created by her hands. She sucked the icy water into her mouth slowly as her sapphire eyes continued to scan the horizon.

Movement caught her eyes, a deer, white as snow was running away in the distance. She pushed herself to her feet and watched it. Ears perked forward, twisting back and forth as she listened to all the sounds around.

Her eyes caught the movement of a bow string being pulled by a large Anthro-wolf like herself. She dropped to the ground quickly to protect herself, her heart suddenly racing. She lifted her ebony nose, scenting the air again. She could tell it was male, the scent strong coming from him and his size too had struck her as male. She looked around for an escape, hoping he would leave her be.

Her ears rested against her skull as she stayed put cautiously, the fur aligning her lean muscles rippling as her muscles tensed, ready to strike if need be, but more likely ready to run.

The deer. He hadn't expected it to be so close, but by the looks of it it had crossed a stream, and it hadn't been able to develop the scent of wet fur just yet, that explains why he couldn't smell it when it was so close, but regardless, now it would be easier to track. His attention swiftly returned to the female, she was... hiding? That was no behavior befitting a wolf, unless she were trying to flank him somehow, but he didn't hear any movement from anywhere else, no, she was hiding, perhaps to force him closer?

Lucky for him he wasn't dumb. That was a common misconception about wolves, especially lycans, that they were mindless beasts that always killed without thought. No, he wasn't dumb, he didn't so much approach as he did circle, keeping the bow partially drawn to save energy. He'd come to the other side of her cover a few seconds later, and he'd draw his bow again, "Who are you? And what is your purpose here?"

Her sharp hearing caught the sound of him as he broke through the brush besides her. She had listened as she stayed close to the ground, and learned there was not multiple of him out there ready to strike. She knew wolves hunted in packs, so this wolf being alone surprised her. And while he was still much larger than her even in her largest form, she was less concerned by his presence now.

"Who are you? And what is your purpose here?"

She stood, turning to face him. Her tail rested against her legs as she stood, her ears, perked forward defensively as her sapphire eyes scanned him closely, eying the bow a little before seeking his eyes out. He wore some clothes... that was... different. She wore nothing in this form, she preferred to wear no clothes, ever, though in human form she did so to appease the humans.

"My name is Sephrenia... I was getting a drink....

She said lightly, though a tinge of a warning growl played across her vocals. It said "I don't want to fight, but I will defend myself." She kept her chin high, slowly dragging her tongue over her ebony muzzle, showing off her sharp ivory teeth without actually threatening him.

So she was naked, not uncommon among his kind, he wore clothing mostly to protect his legs, his fur took care of the rest. Her explanation was vague, vague enough to warrant suspicion if nothing else. He was even less inclined to trust her the moment she growled, which was swiftly met with one of his own, his lips curling in a snarl that said, quite clearly, "Try it, I dare you"

But before it could continue any further his ears perked up at another sound, coming from across the river, he sniffed the air. If she were to listen she'd notice it too, the scent of many wolves headed their way. In that moment, she was no longer his biggest concern.

"Are they with you?" He asked.

He growled through curling lips causing her to step back slightly, she would be no match for his size and she knew this much. Her eyes darted from him to a way out, but as quickly as his demeanor to her had gotten dangerous, his attention shifted.

His ears perked, causing her own to perk as she looked around, catching the sounds of quite a few feet padding in their direction. She too lifted her muzzle to the air, taking in a deep breath through her nose before taking a second through her mouth, letting the scent run over the roof of her mouth and her tongue, tasting rather than smelling it.

"Are they with you?"

He asked gruffly, the distress in his voice, obvious. She could lie... say they were and maybe he would get scared off by the fact she had others with her, or she could be truthful and help him with whatever was headed their way.

"I have no pack." she said abruptly. Ears pinning against her skull as she stepped to the brush, grabbing her own bow and quiver, nocking 2 arrows before stepping nearer to him, cautiously, following his gaze.

Well that was news. Not exactly happy news but neither was it immediately disastrous, nor did she show any signs of lying. So he was inclined to believe her. That wasn't to say he trusted her by any means, but the pack coming up on them didn't seem to care who they were, so he had no reason to believe that they were affiliated with them in any way.

He sniffed again, "I'd estimate there to be twelve of them, and I doubt they are all that there is. If what you say is true, then you have nothing to fear from us, so for now we need to retreat, we cannot possibly overcome twelve on our own."

She nodded, moving to where the bow had been hidden and grabbing her bag. She didn't know why she felt the urge to follow him, but she definitely did. He was definitely Alpha material, and his attitude mist definitely appealed to her.

After she grabbed her bag, holding the bow still, she moved to his side again.

"Let us get out of here" She said softly. The urge to be submissive to him, to get her head beneath his and seek out his approval tore at her senses, but right now was not the time to indulge that instinct. She didn't know if following him was a good idea, but she would do so and hopefully would benefit from it.

She grabbed her bag, which had apparently been in one of the nearby bushes, and agreed with little opposition to his decision. He didn't hesitate any further than that, he gave instructions to stay close so that he could lead her back to his pack, she likely wouldn't be trusted at first, maybe even detained for a little bit, but it was unlikely that they'd harm her unless she were aggressive.

It would be a long run, he'd keep roughly the same pace as she so that they wouldn't be separated easily, and they'd make good distance in the two and a half hour run to the pack's hilldens. Upon arrival she'd see what was essentially a village of sorts, a number of small hills with holes in each, making each it's own den of sorts, and each housing an individual or pair of wolves.

Off to one side would be the sight of an open forge, a couple of anvils and a clay furnace with a pair of wolves working hot steel. Each wore leather aprons to protect them from the hot coals. A fletcher and bowyer were working off to the other side, stacks of arrows and a small pile of bows behind them. The entirety of the Hilldens was active, various wolves were doing various tasks, cooking, tanning leather, carrying wood, or training pups in the use of weaponry. Their arrival was not unnoticed though.

Upon arrival a number of heads turned their way at the scent of a newcomer. One wolf in particular would stand out. A wolf who's fur was pure white, and who's body was toned and strong, but clearly past it's prime. An elderly but well-built wolf who's very presence commanded respect and obedience, there would be no mistake that this was the Alpha-Male.

The Alpha approached them, a single hand resting on the pommel of his sword as he approached. He looked weaker than what most wolf societies would permit, but at the same time, the fact that he was there at all when he was so old would tell anyone with any brains that he was a force to be reckoned with. Baraek bowed as he approached.

"You've returned so soon?" The alpha questioned, "Yet no prey."

"I bring news, a new pack is coming into our territory. I don't know if they are aware of us, but they are many in number."

The alpha paused to think, "A good thing then, that we are prepared for war. But who is this stranger you bring to us?"

"She claims to be Omega," He said simply, earning a few murmurs from those around them, "I don't know how trustworthy she is, though it did not seem that she was affiliated with the encroaching pack."

The alpha paused for thought again. then approached her and began an inspection. He'd circle her once, then stop once in front of her again, then he'd address Baraek. "Keep a close eye on her. And keep her restrained if ever you need to leave her alone."

Baraek nodded his understanding then turned away and began to walk, and he said to her one word, "Come."

She ran with him quietly, staying just a step behind him respectfully. His scent filled her nose as they ran, he was wolven, but not a shifter like her, his scent was strictly wolven. She thought to tell him what she was, but the opportunity did not present itself. She kept her voice to herself as they ran for quite sometime before they came upon a village. It was a beautiful sight, she’d never seen anything like it. She slowed a little, though he did not so she had to speed up again to catch back up.

By the sights of it, there were alot of his kind here, this unnerved her. She knew she meant no ill will, but they didn’t, and based on his reaction towards her and the other wolves that had been headed their way, his kind didn’t assume good will above bad. She slowed again, taking in the sights of the village, her sharply angled ears perked curiously as she walked past the metal workers, her bright sapphire eyes curious, wanting to go see what exactly was being made, but she stayed near Baraek. There were so many wolves, all actively working until her presence was noticed. Many a head lifted to look at them as they walked through the streets.

As she looked around, her sapphire eyes landed on the large white wolf and she stopped in her tracks. He was obviously important, the way he stood, the strength rippling through his body all screamed dangerous and strong. She followed Baraek slowly, her tail pressed tight against the back of her legs as she walked. She knew little of the wolven hierarchy, but instinct overruled everything and she knew somewhat how to act. The white wolf approached, walking to them with his hand on his sword. Her ears twisted, resting back against her skull as he approached Baraek and Baraek bowed. She stepped back cautiously, her heart throbbing behind her breastplate, nervously.

"You've returned so soon? Yet no prey." The white wolf said, almost accusingly. Though she did not know Baraek well, she did not care for the way this wolf spoke to him. He was the closest thing to a friend she had in this village and this other male was being quite rude in her opinion. But she said nothing and lowered her eyes to the ground submissively.

"I bring news, a new pack is coming into our territory. I don't know if they are aware of us, but they are many in number."

"A good thing then, that we are prepared for war. But who is this stranger you bring to us?"

"She claims to be Omega, I don't know how trustworthy she is, though it did not seem that she was affiliated with the encroaching pack."

The white wolf approached her, circling her slowly. The muscles beneath her ebony pelt twitched nervously as he circled her, stopping in front of her, face to face before he addressed Baraek again. "Keep a close eye on her. And keep her restrained if ever you need to leave her alone."

“Restrained?” She thought was she a common house pet to be caged? She swallowed dryly, biting her tongue against her desire to respond. She was highly outnumbered here, she’d do much better to keep her mouth shut. "Come." @Baraek said as he began walking away, she followed closely, keeping her eyes down, looking to his feet. She didn’t like this in the slightest, true she wasn’t part of this family, but she also wasn't some wild animal needing restraint. The corners of her ebony muzzle showed her displeasure in the frown she wore, but she said nothing.

Her fear was obvious for all to see. They could hear her heart beating faster as the alpha approached, that certainly helped them with not viewing her as a threat, if she feared them, then she was less likely to fight them. Their collective gaze went from mistrustful to amused fairly quickly.

“Restrained?” She thought was she a common house pet to be caged? She swallowed dryly, biting her tongue against her desire to respond. The corners of her ebony muzzle showed her displeasure in the frown she wore, but she said nothing.

Baraek lead her away, and though she was silent her displeasure was by no means secret. He could practically hear her frustration. "Don't worry, I doubt you'll have to be kept in bonds long. A week or two at most, and then only for short periods of time. Normally showing fear is a bad thing in a wolf pack, but in this case I do believe it saved your life. I doubt anyone who saw that will expect you to try anything."

They approached a den, very similar to the others, and stopped outside it as Baraek began to make a fire outside the door in what appeared to be a small, designated firepit. Just a small bowl dug into the ground surrounded by rocks and filled with ash and charcoal. "Go on inside and make yourself at home. You may be staying with us a while, and if you end up joining the pack you'll get your own den, but until then I'm your Warden, that means you stay with me until further notice."

His words eased her frustration slightly and her steps sped up a little as she came a bit closer to him as they walked to one of the dens. Baraek stopped in front of it, beginning to make a fire outside in a firepit that had been there already. She tilted her head a little as she watched him curiously for a moment before looking around again. She slipped from the bag, holding it in front of herself lightly as she stood idly by taking in the sights around them. She lifted her muzzle to the sky, sniffing the smells in the area curiously. She really liked it here, this set up, this community was nice.

"Go on inside and make yourself at home. You may be staying with us a while, and if you end up joining the pack you'll get your own den, but until then I'm your Warden, that means you stay with me until further notice."

She did as she was told, walking inside slowly and looking around. She settled her bag upon the ground slowly as she looked at what the den had to offer, before looking back at the door. When to tell him what she was, plagued her mind. She was afraid he would be mad that she held back this long, and the longer she waited, the more nervous she got. She didn’t know if he would even care to be honest, he hadn’t asked after all. Perhaps he didn’t know she wasn’t even one of them. She stepped back towards the door, looking to him for a moment before speaking.

“Can I help you with anything?”

(nah, I was just trying to be helpful. Thought i'd help you out is all, if you're more comfortable doing it that way it's no inconvenience.)

She'd find the inside of the den to be supported by what appeared to be a large ribcage, likely that of a large troll or other oversized animal, which would explain why it was able to stay up at all. Inside were very few things, a sharpening stone laid neatly with a rough cloth, a fur bedroll and some extra materials for various things, mostly leather and shaped bones.

“Can I help you with anything?”

"Not really." He told her, setting sparks to the kindling with flint and the back edge of his dagger. The fire caught, and before too long it was going steady.

Honestly he could smell the difference in her, and frankly he wasn't surprised that she wasn't the same breed of lycan as himself, he'd have been surprised if she was of the same breed. But that was hardly of any importance. Once the fire was going steady, he went into the den and retrieved a few pieces of leather, and two hunks of meat.

"I need to go get something, I shouldn't be long but I am supposed to restrain you when I leave. However I don't think you're a threat, so just go into the den and stay put until I get back."

He was true to his word and returned very soon, the hunks of meat were gone and he had returned with a simple iron buckle. So he sat by the fire, and began to work with the leather, "You can come out now."

"Not really."

She nodded softly and headed back inside. She walked around quietly, dragging her fingers gently over the rib cage, curiously, bringing her hand back to her as he walked in to avoid getting in trouble for touching things she possibly should not be touching. She looked to him as he moved to grab some leather and meat before addressing her again in his normal, strong tone.

"I need to go get something, I shouldn't be long but I am supposed to restrain you when I leave. However I don't think you're a threat, so just go into the den and stay put until I get back."

She had mentally readied herself to offer her hands to be restrained as he said he needed to leave… but then, surprisingly, he advised he did not see her as a threat, she just needed to go into the den and stay put. She nodded softly and moved to sit on the fur bedroll in silence. If she didn’t mess with anything while he was gone, it would be for the better and neither of them would get into any trouble.

He was back relatively quickly as promised, though instead of meat he carried what looked like metal, though she wasn’t sure. He returned to the fire, she still did not move.

"You can come out now."

She stood and headed back out, lowering herself to her knees near him and the fire, her ears perked forward as she watched him work quietly. She drug her tongue slowly over her muzzle before speaking…

“The white wolf… He is the leader here? And what does Omega mean?”
She asked quietly, her sapphire eyes lifting to his, unsure if he would be mad at her for asking too many questions. Their “family” dynamic was far different than anything she’d ever been around and she was truly unsure what was OK and what wasn't.

“The white wolf… He is the leader here? And what does Omega mean?”

"Yes, the white wolf we spoke with is the alpha. Omega is our term for 'lone wolf', or a wolf with no pack, as you claim to be." He explained simply as he worked the leather. "If you speak with him you will address him as Alpha, as is fairly typical of packs."

He paused a moment. "So where exactly do you hail from? And what brought you into our territory?"

She watched him work the leather quietly, nodding softly at the requirement of her addressing the alpha as such. She tilted her head slightly as she watched him work so expertly with his hands, her eyes drifting slightly to look at him a little closer now that things had seemingly settled down. She looked away as he addressed her.

"So where exactly do you hail from? And what brought you into our territory?"

“I was born and raised in Elbion. My mother was a prostitute… my father a government official, a nasty human being he was. He had my mother killed, accused her of witchcraft…”

She said softly as she looked to the ground, not really sure how to get into why he accused her of witchcraft without telling him she was a shifter. She lifted her eyes and continued, trying to avoid that fact.

“He was a drunk, and tried to kill me as well but obviously was unsuccessful, so i have been wandering ever since. I wasn’t looking for anything specific, just trying to find somewhere to belong, away from him.”

She shrugged lightly, leaving it at that for now.

He glanced up at her, then looked back down at his project. "I'm sorry to hear that. So you were turned into a lycan, not born as one. I thought you smelled different. So do you shift? Or are you a permanent wolf?"

He asked both out of curiosity and for a purpose. His current project had specifically to do with her, a more secure way of binding her should she be inclined to try sneaking away whilst he slept. He doubted she'd like it, but it was to keep her under control as the alpha instructed. So really he didn't think too hard about it.

Neither did he really care if she was a shifter, it was just part of the nature of some lycans. So he simply wanted to know, and he doubted anyone in the pack would really mind either.

He himself had a rather... tense relationship with his father, but probably not so bad as the relationship she had with hers. That's not to say his father wouldn't kill him, but it would be far more honest than what this woman described to him.

She noticed his eyes as he lifted them to her for a few fleeting moments. His eyes were a handsome pale blue, far paler than the deep sapphire of her own but none-the-less stunning. His fur was grey, not dark like charcoal, but a soft grey. She was curious and wanted to sniff him and touch his pelt in her human form, as she had not spent anytime with wolves of any variety, but she knew the distrust was too high still and she would keep her hands to herself.

"I'm sorry to hear that. So you were turned into a lycan, not born as one. I thought you smelled different. So do you shift? Or are you a permanent wolf?"

"I am, not really a Lycan, I don't think. I am not overly familiar with the name. My mother was a shape shifter, he was a human. I am a shape shifter like she was, it was that ability that had him able to get her called a witch and in turn, burned as one. I have, three forms I can use at will. Human, this form, and a pure wolven form. I was with him until he tried to kill me 4 years ago. Ever since then I have just been wandering and exploring."

She bit the inside of her cheek softly as she rested her hands on her thighs, tail wagging slowly as she watched him work. Curiousity got the better of her though and she couldn't stop herself from inquiring. "What are you making sir?"

He nodded his understanding, "Lycan is short for Lycanthrope, which is the term nerds use for werewolves. I suppose that isn't quite accurate for us, but it's close enough. As far as technicalities go, you are more lycan than we are. I'm truly sorry to hear of your mother's fate, noone deserves to die in such a way. Might I ask you to show me what you look like as a human? I'm curious."

She bit the inside of her cheek softly as she rested her hands on her thighs, tail wagging slowly as she watched him work. Curiousity got the better of her though and she couldn't stop herself from inquiring. "What are you making sir?"

He looked down at his project. "I don't think you'll like it, but I imagine it would be far more comfortable to sleep with than it would be if your hands were bound. It's a collar, to keep you restrained at night, to keep you from running off and such. It's really only for when you sleep though, and to keep the alpha happy without being too uncomfortable."

"Lycan is short for Lycanthrope, which is the term nerds use for werewolves. I suppose that isn't quite accurate for us, but it's close enough. She nodded softly and stood, looking around cautiously. “Should we go inside? I, can not shift with clothing on. I, don’t know how your pack will take to a naked human appearing out of no where…” She laughed lightly, nervously.

She nodded softly with a faint "Ok..." thankful he was at least being honest about what he was making. It was true, she did not like the idea of being collared, but it did beat being handcuffed. She would survive however long it took for them to trust her. She was nervous, there was no doubt about that, but she was oddly at peace here. She watched the pack move about, partaking in their daily ventures, though obviously they were somewhat distracted by her presence and they looked to her whenever they passed.

She waited for him to answer whether they should head inside before she shifted. He knew his pack better than she did. If he felt no more ruckus would be caused by her shifting here, she would do it. It didn’t matter to her.

"If you'd be more comfortable inside, then we can go in. I don't think it will matter much. After all I doubt your scent will change much with you, they will be able to tell you're the same female who came in earlier. We've had humans here before as well, it was actually a human that taught us how to cook."

Well at least she was complacent. Aggressive reaction likely would have kept it there longer, but her willingness to cooperate was certainly helping her chances with the pack, andifshe ended up helping them in what may very well end up being a Pack war, well then she was well on her way to being accepted as one of them, shifter or otherwise. He gave her a reassuring look, "I stand by my estimate, I don't think it will last longer than a couple of weeks."

So he sat and waited to hear whether she'd prefer to do it inside the hut or outside.

She shrugged, if he didn’t think they’d care, she was fine not disturbing his work by making him go inside. “I can shift here then, I am not embarrassed.”

He seemed pleased by her response in regards to the collar, his demeanor shifting just a very little bit, almost un-noticeably, but she sensed it a little… or maybe it was her imagination. He spoke again before she started to shift.

"I stand by my estimate, I don't think it will last longer than a couple of weeks."

She shifted on the spot, the process taking less than a minute. Her ebony fur melted away as she shrunk nearly a foot to her human form. Her long muzzle shortened, shrinking into her human face and the long black fur upon her head grew to thigh length black hair. She bit the inside of her lip once she was fully shifted, keeping her eyes nervously upon him, watching his reaction quietly. She kept her hands by her sides, just standing there, watching him look at her. To her, the scent didn’t change but she did not know what he would see, or sense. Her father was human, preferred she stay in human form and had no special senses to tell her otherwise.

She kept her eyes on him for a moment before pulling them away to look around and see if she was noticed at the moment, she brushed a long strand of onyx hair from her face as she turned back to face him.

He nodded his approval. "Quite the impressive frame I must say."

He sniffed at her, "no noticeable difference in scent so far as I can tell, so no need to be worried about the others."

He gave her another once-over examination, and the approval was clear on his face. "Quite impressive indeed."

After a few moments he broke the silence with a question. "Are you hungry? I can have some meat cooked for you if you want some."

She watched him closely as he nodded, then stretched slightly to sniff her. She didn’t move as she watched him quietly, smiling weakly. "Quite the impressive frame I must say. No noticeable difference in scent so far as I can tell, so no need to be worried about the others."

“Good” She said with a soft sigh of relief. “Though, I think I will remain in Lycan form, it is more matching of everyone here, so I think I will be less noticeable.”

"Quite impressive indeed." he said again, she could tell he was pleased.

“unless you prefer I stay in this form.” She said with a soft smile as she lowered herself to her knees, sitting back on her feet as she went back to watching him work. She stayed in her human form until he told her otherwise, the silence suddenly seemed very heavy between them.

"Are you hungry? I can have some meat cooked for you if you want some." She shook her head softly with a smile.

“I can eat when you eat. You are busy. I can help around here, once I am trusted. If there is a major fight coming… I maybe able help heal the injured. I would be happy to do so.” She left the offer at that, she could explain later. From the sounds of it, she would be attached to his hip for the foreseeable future, though, she wasn’t really complaining about that fact in the slightest.

"I personally have no preference. Remain or change as you will." He said simply to her, he really didn't mind either way. Her wolf form was more befitting where they were but it was her choice to make. He returned to the crafting of the collar.

He gave her a smile, "do that and trust you will have. As for a major fight, it is possible, no, it is likely, but there is the possibility that it may be avoided. Though I doubt that will be the case. Fa... The Alpha is stubborn at times, and he is not frequently inclined to forgive. If you ask me conflict is inevitable."

After another half hour or so of chatting he'd finally finish his work. He handed her the collar for her to inspect, it was nothing more than a simple leather buckle-strap with holes for adjustment and rivets to hold the buckle in place. "Choose which form you'd prefer, because I don't recommend shifting while that's on."
