One of the few remaining apex predators of Arethil hides in plain sight in Vel Anir.

Appearance

Rough black hued scales and spikes cover Solaiel’s upper extremities, while his underbelly and chest areas are comprised of a lighter gray coloration with much smoother scales. Solaiel has four legs and two wings. Large claws adorn all limbs including a clawed digit on each wing. Spikes jut out from his head, spine, sides of his tail, shoulders, and hips.

Solaiel is nearly impossible to see during the night, but brilliant slit emerald green eyes do clash against the dark coloration of his hide. Their glow will give him away once one is to close for comfort.

In human form, Solaiel is roughly six feet tall with an average build, slightly tan skin, and somewhat unkempt graying black hair. He appears to be an aging man perhaps in his late 40’s. The irises of his eyes are still a brilliant green, but do not glow.

A human would have a hard time trying to tell him apart from another human. However, he cannot hide the scent of his true nature because the transformation is magical in nature. Therefore, beast folk and other creatures with heightened senses will be able to tell that something is different about him.

Skills and Abilities

Solaiel is heavily naturally armored. Spikes provide deadly obstacles and natural weapons in physical confrontation. Scales are hardened to deflect small arms and resist magic.

Furthermore Solaiel is a dragon, and should not be confused with his smaller cousin, the wyvern. Wyverns have two legs, and use their wings as additional limbs for grappling. Dragons on the other hand have four legs in addition to their wings and are generally larger. This makes him the superior ground predator, but much less agile in the air than the wyvern.

Increased bulk makes him slower, but also more able to plow through obstacles. He is also of western stock which makes him shorter and stockier vs the longer slenderer eastern species.

Being heavy does make him more susceptible to wing damage though, which could ground him. The hide of the wings is tough, but not armored like the rest of the body to facilitate flight.

Solaiel is among the dragons that possess the ability to breath fire. This is a biological function rather than elemental. Fire glands in the dragon’s mouth produce a napalm like substance that is so flammable that it combusts when leaving the mouth.

It can be sprayed in a fine aerosol like mist that gets ignited while exhaled to form fire breath. The substance can also be projected from the mouth like a stream. This napalm like substance can be a problem because it will burn until it burns itself out. This is how a streak of dragon’s fire can continue to burn even while on typically nonflammable surfaces like stone.

Then there is human form, which is a magical transformation to allow Solaiel to lessen his footprint. Through this he can survive among the other races without consuming large quantities of meat. He retains a bit of his denser muscle structure, but does not have the sheer strength of a dragon in a human body. His flesh also pierces and burns much the same as any human’s flesh making for a much easier target. However, magical abilities seem to manifest more strongly since he is not surrounded in natural magic suppressing armor.

Solaiel was born with an affinity to the element of darkness. This aptitude allows for abilities such as fading his figure into smoke, controlling weak willed creatures, or consuming their life force. However, this affinity to darkness also makes him considerably weak to light type magics.

Personality

Solaiel is a god among ants, and his personality reflects this. Self-centered with a superiority complex does not even begin to scratch the surface. Yet, Solaiel rarely kills the lesser races. One might confuse this with compassion or kindness. Such a thought would be a grave mistake.

Many dragons kill indiscriminately. Indeed, Solaiel will kill without the slightest tinge of empathy. The difference is that while most dragons covet treasure, Solaiel also covets status and slaves. Thus, he prefers to toy with lesser beings and collect them rather than to slaughter them.

In this way Solaiel appears at times to be kind or compassionate. Those that have displeased him know better.

Biography & Lore

Dragons were once the de facto apex predators of Arethil. Magic and the innovations of man had eventually changed that. Dragons had become nearly extinct due to slaying, poor fertility rates, and territorial behavior.

Some of the surviving dragons did so through magical transformation into human forms. This allowed them to live among the lesser races.

Solaiel had been resentful of these creatures that populated Arethil so rapidly. Yet his avarice eventually won out. He found that human ingenuity had developed such pleasures that dragons never could have fathomed on their own. The dragon engorged himself upon drink, treasures, court intrigue, and the sins of the flesh. He collected gold, status, and slaves as he wormed his way into the role of a noble. One that had gained a reputation as a devious mage that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Currently Solaiel claims Vel Anir as his territory. Humans are ill equipped to discover his true nature, and he found the xenophobic nature of the city to be delicious.
