Selene Avar
Selene Avar is a First Level Dreadlord of Vel Anir.
Born twenty seven years ago Selene was taken from her family only days after her birth. Like many other children gifted with abilities of magic Selene was destined to become a Dreadlord almost the first day of entering the world of Arethil.
From a young age she was forged into a weapon for Vel Anir. Taught to use a sword, bow, and of course her own magic Selene became a near master of battle before she reached the age of fifteen. Her abilities only grew from there, and she quickly rose through the ranks of the Dreadlord's.
On her eighteenth birthday she was granted patronage by House Virak, and thus entered their service. She has been incredibly loyal since then, carrying out whatever task necessary no matter how dark or underhanded. Ambition drives Selene above everything else, and always there is a push for more.
Secretly, Selene harbors a great deal of envy for the nobles above her, and since her eighteenth name day she has sought a way to join their ranks.
Skills and Abilities
Like other Dreadlord's of Vel Anir Selene is a weapon of war. From the young age of seven Selene was taught the way of battle. She is an exceptional swordsman and even quite decent with a bow.
Though not a blade master, her swordsman ship is exceptional and has often been praised. She has won multiple dueling tournaments and takes the art very seriously, though more often than not only uses it as a display of skill rather than in combat.
Of course, what makes he truly great is her gifts within the realms of magic.
Her strongest talents lay within the control of the elements of earth and fire. These two are her greatest abilities, and both are something she can control almost innately without much thought or effort. Of course she still pays a price for both, coming in the form of her own stamina as well as a 'battery' of power.
This 'battery' is in simpler terms magical energy she absorbs and stores within an amulet strung around her neck. This energy comes from multiple sources, though it's main origins are from extreme heats. This includes fires, magma, and the largest of all; daylight.
Despite her innate control in these elements, Selene was also taught some minor forms of college magic as well as more simple 'battle' magic. These skills however are less developed, thus they require more time and energy on her part to actually utilize.
As well as these skills in magic, Selene in the past has also shown an innate kinship and fondness for dragons and serpents. This is often portrayed in her use of magic itself. Many of her spells take on a familiar tune, mimicking these creatures.
Biography & Lore
Dreadlords are the mages of Vel Anir.
They are above all and anything else the backbone of the Anirian Guard and the primary reason that the city has managed to survive for so long while other human settlements have either fallen or been forced to take in unwanteds. Dreadlords have an incredibly fierce and deadly reputation, one that is well deserved and reinforced often. Unlike the mages of Elbion or those of the Allirian College, a Dreadlord is not taught the finer points of magic. He or she is a weapon, purely and simple. Honed and crafted like a sword to protect Vel Anir at any and all cost.
Taken from their families as soon as they show signs of magical ability, Dreadlords are raised almost from childhood to be battlemages. Not only well trained users of magic, Dreadlords are also well rounded combatants in their own right. Most know how to use a sword, fight from horseback, and are taught a variety of skills to help them in battle.
Like everyone else in Vel Anir a Dreadlord eventually swears allegiance to one of the Seven Great Houses. Unlike everyone else however the Dreadlords have a choice in whom they swear to. This is usually decided through a combination of things that include; who was the Dreadlord's mentor, were they helped by one of the houses, personal politics, and of course sometimes outright coercion.
Though some Dreadlorda take this allegiance to heart, others do not. It is not uncommon for Dreadlords to play the infamous game of houses, and often enough through serving their masters Dreadlords are able to raise themselves into the nobility. Other times this is achieved through betrayal. Of course, any Dreadlord would be wise to remember that the Great Houses are great for a reason.
In summation; Dreadlords are incredibly powerful Battlemages, serving as the lieutenant's of the Great Houses and as the main back bone of the Anirian Military.
Selene is no different than any other Dreadlord. She does not have much of a history or indeed a background at all.
As far as anyone knows she was born in Vel Anir and was taken from her family nearly at birth. She was put into training with the other children and eventually rose through the ranks. She was shown to be incredibly adept at magics of earth and fire, making her a particularly talented combatant. She also was shown to have an odd affinity towards dragons and serpents.
Eventually she rose quickly through the ranks, mastering several levels of trainings before her peers.
She was one of the first of her class to receive offers of a patron, and eventually chose House Virak for their military lifestyle which appealed a great deal to her.
Since then she has only risen through the ranks, and become a First Level Dreadlord in the service of her Great House. She takes great pride in her work and firmly believes in the goals of her city, though quietly envies the position of the nobles and works through her own machinations to become one of them.
