Originating from the Eldyr Tree and residing in the Ixchel Wilds, the Pallexpri are descendents of the original forest spirits by the Eldyr Tree who were able to escape the violence wrought by the race of man. This lineage gifts them with a natural affinitity for druidic magic, magic involving nature and manipulating it. A typically sedentary species, most Pallexpri go their entire lives without leaving the Wilds. Of course, some are brought outside of it either due to their own desires or by factors beyond their control.

Overview

Language

Pallexpri are odd in the sense that they communicate through a weak form of telepathy. This telepathy works similar to regular speaking in that the farther the target is, the quieter the voice is. For the groups of Pallexpri that hunt together, this is exceptionally useful as it allows for quiet planning. All Pallexpri are taught Exprian, the language of the Pallexpri. In Exprian, some words and phrases include: "Ira Consyr" for Ixchel Wilds, "Iniori Abo" for the Elder Tree, "Sal vey" for hello, and "Ara mio" for goodbye. When coupled with telepathy, Exprian sounds exceptionally smooth and calming, similar to a slow stream of water.

Some Pallexpri learn Common through the meeting of outsiders, specifically those who are attempting to traverse through the Ixchel Wilds. However, it is not a commonly spoken language throughout the Pallexpri. Those who do learn it rarely use it in abundance or the majority of their communications, usually using simple phrases so that they can relay ideas such as "Hello/goodbye," "We are not harmful," and "This is a gift for you."

Appearance

Standing tall, the first thing one notices of a Pallexpri is the vividly glowing hair and eyes of them. All Pallexpri share common physical traits, these being: skin depicting a gradient, exceptionally light-weight hair that floats behind their head and glows a similar color to their skin, plain eyes, and being tall. Pallexpri often come in different colors, with some being a gradient of blue and some also being a gradient of grey. Their hair is often left up to the individual to decide how to style it, with some choosing to cut it short akin to grass while others choose to let it grow long.

There is typically no mouth on the face of Pallexpri, although some from more isolated populations do appear to have them, being the reason for their unique way of communicating and eating, which will be discussed further in the Traits section of the overview.

Pallexpri actually come in a wide variety of appearances in terms of color, but they do share the features of a general glow on their body and hair, along with being rather tall and thinner creatures. Subraces are not currently known to be existing, but due to the fragmented nature of Pallexpri, certain features have become more common in certain groups than others.

Habitat

Most Pallexpri reside in the Ixchel Wilds, however some do reside in the large forests surrounding the Eldyr Tree. Pallexpri are mostly solitary, although a few have grouped together in family units or tribes to better hunt larger and more dangerous prey. They excel in dense forests due to their agile nature and druidic magic, able to manipulate and maneuver about the environment to close the gap between them and their prey or to escape from a predator.

However, this means that Pallexpri are unequiped to properly function in a desert or desert-adjacent environment, being unable to use foliage as a means for traversal or attack. The lack of moisture, while not having as severe an effect as it might for a Mer-person, will take its toll on a Pallexpri. In addition, snowy areas are also an undesirable location for Pallexpri due to its cold temperature being a stark difference to the Ixchel Wilds' humid and warm weather. In cold locations, plants often can't survive unless they are specifically designed to do so in such temperatures. This limits one of the Pallexpri's stronger traits, that being their affinity for druidic magic.

Traits

Pallexpri have a set of traits that set them apart from outsiders, psychological, physical or magical in nature. Pallexpri are naturally inclined to the art of druidic magic due to their lineage and ancestry, forming a natural connection to the forest that, with training, can be harnessed and manipulated. Those who do not possess this connection or affinity are often shunned and considered disabled in some way, usually being pushed to either a difficult life in solitude, a more accepting tribe, or outside the Wilds.

Their typical lack of mouths has resulted in their telepathy and also a unique way of consuming food and drink. To eat, they put the food on their hands and simply focus on eating it, as it is slowly absorbed and eroded away. For this reason, berries are a common snack for Pallexpri due to it being able to be squished, allowing for better ease of absorption. Liquids are drunk in a similar way.

Their hair is another identifying feature, consisting of incredibly light hairs that float easily in the breeze so that it isn't a large problem when running through the trees. It glows in a color, usually matching their skin tone in a lighter color.

History

Background

No official settlements or cities of Pallexpri exist as of yet, the largest gatherings being tribes and family units consisting of 20-25 people and the majority being solitary. These tribes usually include two or three families that have decided to place their homes together. These Pallexpri then hunt together in order to quickly catch more and bigger prey, bringing them back to the small village. They may also go out to gather fruits and berries out in the Wilds, in case Some Pallexpri, referred to commonly as "Shamans" or "Druids," stay at the village to focus on using their druidic magic to manipulate the Wilds around them to the tribe's needs. This may include walls of brambles to ward off predators and scavengers who caught the sense of food, growing berry bushes up the sides of trees and homes for ease of access. The ritual for picking a shaman varies from tribe to tribe, ranging from none at all to a self-discovery journey. No trade is done between villages at the moment. Their homes are built into trees, some built traditionally and others with strong druidic magic, and some with a combination of the two. It is usually very simplistic, consisting of a bed, a chair, and a table.

The other half of Pallexpri, being the slight majority, are more solitary, living either alone or with a partner. They set up their house in their favored location, going out and hunting smaller prey, leaving gathering as a more prominent source of food. They still utilize druidic magic, using it to grow patches of berries to garden.

Lore

From the Academic Journel About Unexplored Regions of the World, by Theodore Wilois

A prominent landmark east of the Spine, many adventurous travelers have attempted to traverse the dangerous Ixchel Wilds in hope of finding lost treasure or something that would reveal valuable information and insight on the past we don't understand well. However, while some of the more cautious ones have managed to enter the outskirts, the majority have been presumed dead.

The living survivors of the Ixchel Wilds haven't ventured very far within the large area, but they have offered some insight on what might live within it. It was previously assumed no species existed in the Ixchel Wilds with some sentience to it due to its dangerous conditions, however this belief has been challenged by surviving adventurers mentioning a strange creature stalking them. "It had great glowing eyes and hair that floated upward, tall as it hid behind a tree. Thinking it was just my mind playing tricks on me, I kept on walking. The creature did too. I saw it trailing beside me, about 15 feet away I think. It almost looked like a forest spirit, moving with a sort of grace to it. Eventually, I heard some voice in my head, saying something random in a language I didn't know. After that, the creature walked away. I came back a little bit after that," said Janis Arlu, one such traveler.

Some people have said they've seen similar creatures roaming west of the Spine as well, setting up strange camps out in less populated regions with walls and walls of foliage surrounding it. Some have gone out to speak in a strange language, before returning inside. No hostile action has been committed against people, but it is debated in some academic circles and taverns alike if the deceased travelers in the Wilds were killed by these creatures.Whatever these creatures are, they've been dubbed "forest spirits" or "dryads" by some people, or if they even exist, we may not know the answer for many years.
