Kieran was born and raised a slave, forced to fight in gladiatorial combat from a young age for their master's entertainment. They encountered a mysterious golden blade that seemed to speak to them, and before they knew it, they’d slaughtered their master and his family. Forced to become a fugitive, Kieran sought to understand the power contained in their new weapon, and their search brought them to Elbion.

Appearance

A grey skinned tiefling, though you wouldn’t guess just looking at them. Their horns, the defying characteristic of the race, were cut off at a young age as their master decided they could prove to be a liability to Kieran in the gladiatorial ring. Only stubs were left behind, which they cover with a hood most of the time – not necessarily to conceal their race, but their identity as a whole. They have pupilless golden eyes and long white hair that their wear in a braid. The sides of their head are shaved and covered in intricately designed tattoos, as well as a smaller design on their forehead. Their left forearm bears another tattoo, this one with a design that is harder to make out due to the scars over it, but it has the characteristics of a brand, and it seems to say “XVI” – 16.

Skills and Abilities

Combat training: Kieran was raised to be a gladiator, and thus has the necessary training. They are skilled in the most varied forms of combat, though their preferred weapon is a sword.

Unnatural swordsmanship and strength: When under the influence of their cursed blade, they exhibit skills and strength that would be out of the range of someone with their training and physique, though they cannot control what they do in this state and will have no memories of it.

Personality

They have too much anger within them for one so young, but it is to be expected considering their past. They are aware of their own capacity for incredible violence, and much of their energy is spent trying to contain it – though most of the time, it isn’t up to them. They are often lost in their own mind, fighting the influence of their cursed blade which seems to whisper the vilest of things to them. They have a desire to correct the evils of the world so that no one else suffers through what they did, and the entity in the blade latches onto that to control them.

To the outer world, they are distant and mysterious, and this is by design. They are afraid of what the blade might make them do to anyone they get close to. Besides, their entire life before escaping slavery, they never knew who they’d have to fight next, so it best to not make friends lest you be facing them in combat the next day. They are also very cunning and street smart, they had to be to survive.

Biography & Lore

Kieran was born in Cerak At’Thul as a slave, and taken from their family as an infant to be sold and raised as a gladiator. They received no name and were referred to only by a number: XVI, or 16. A number which was tattooed to their forearm like a brand.

One of their duties, besides gladiatorial combat, was to clean and perform maintenance in the weapons that were used by them and the other slaves. One day, while carrying on this task, they encountered a mysterious golden blade they had never seen before. It looked to be much too luxurious to be among the rest of the swords allocated to the slaves, and it piqued their curiosity. They took the blade in their hands and almost immediately felt as though it was speaking in their mind, drawing out their ire over the years of mistreatment. That was the last thing they remembered.

In a zombie-like state, they proceeded to slaughter their master and his entire family, and set fire to the house where they’d been residing. When they came to, with no memory of what they’d done, they were standing at the entrance of the burning residence.

Forced to become a fugitive, Kieran gave themself a new name and scratched out the tattooed brand on their arm which had defined them their entire life, not just to make it harder for anyone looking for them to identify them, but also as a sign of independence and freedom.

The next couple years were rough on them, spent running and hiding from any authority or relatives of their former master, and suffering from blackouts most definitely caused by their sword. It continued to speak to them, urging them to correct the world’s injustices in the most violent ways possible. They resisted it as best as they could, but in the end, they wouldn’t even be able to say what they’d done during one of those blackouts. They’d waken up several times holding a blade covered in blood. It seemed to become stronger each life it took.

Seeking to better understand what lived in their blade, they got word of the renowned College of Elbion, known for their magical education, and decided they might find answers there – though, how a fugitive like themself might gain entry to the College’s facilities, they have yet to find out.
