Griffyn is the young scion of a prominant merchant family, set free from his duties to pursue a 'year and a day' of self-discovery, after which time he will be required to return home, marry well and take on the mantle of his House.

When he just set out, Griffyn was devoid of direction and relatively ignorant of the world outside of Inner City politics. His travels so far have been harsh, even violent, and he has come through each encounter an older and wiser man. He has needed to align his priorities and values as each comes into conflict with local rulers and idealists, and the responsibility of future leadership lies heavily upon his shoulders as his journey contines west across Arethil.

A competant swordsman, Griffyn is broad-shouldered and muscular. He has also begun to learn some basic magic in accordance with the talent for the arcane held by his bloodline, though he sees little use for magic outside of keeping himself safe on the road.

Appearance

Broad-shouldered and tall, Griffyn has a soldier's physique. His pale skin and green eyes speak of his father's family line, where the reddish tint to his hair is a tell of his mother. Griffyn knows how to dress well from his time in business and tends to do so without thinking, accessorising an otherwise practical outfit (usually a leather shortcoat, fine white shirt, dark breeches and sturdy boots) into something a little more flashy. While between homes, Griffyn usually sports a steel longsword on one hip, a simple ironwood wand on the other. His tall posture is a giveaway of his cultured upbringing, as is the slight old-fashioned tinge to his manner of speech.

Skills and Abilities

Griffyn learned the sword from an early age from a hired swordmaster, a grizzled Vel Aniri war veteran, and has a simple, no-frills combat style. Though predictable, his physical bulk makes his technique more than a match to many opponents. Griffyn supplements his swordsmanship with simple combat magic, utilising a basic wand taken from home and training from a hired College mage. His off-hand spells usually encompass quick flourishes of flame to distract or blind, as well as blasts of fire over medium range as he closes to a more optimal distance. He has the capacity to learn beyond his current abilities, but struggles to inspire himself in his studies.

Current spells:
  • WALL - an invisible force to shield and protect. Can be sustained but quickly becomes costly.
  • BURN - fire to set alight, and can be projected over a distance. Griffyn also uses this skill to set a blue flame on his sword.
  • REST - encourages a short-range foe to fall asleep, or to at least lose focus.
  • MOVE - the required impulse to make use of a Portal Stone. He prefers not to where possible, finding the experience discomforting.
Griffyn has some decent knowledge of wilderness survival due to tutelage from one of his father's travelling business partners, but is yet to properly put this into practice. He has also learned a number of languages to better fill his business roles, and is trained in courtly dances for rendezvous with overseas nobility. His mother trained him in the flute when he was younger, but this skill has grown rusty from disuse.

As befits his upbringing, Griffyn comes into his own when attending events and supporting negotiations. He has a quick smile, a wry sense of humour and a grace of movement that prevents him from looking out of place in formal situations. He gives off a straightforward, polite aura that puts many at ease, and which speaks frankly of his uncomplicated, naively honest nature.

Personality

A man originally of structured deals and carefully-worded treaties, Griffyn has a confident and potent manner with a keen eye for humour. In a conversation, he will usually spend his time keeping others at ease and lightening the air, as was his role at his father's side during his adolescence. He prefers to settle scores amicably, but can't hide that he enjoys the exercise of combat and will not shy away from a friendly challenge.

As an elder brother and heir to his family property, Griffyn has a protective streak which pushes him towards lost causes and broken hearts. He is honest to a fault, and has a spirit that strives for reconciliation, even if he himself is reluctant or if there is good money to be made from another resolution. Outside of business, his hobbies include music, reading and card games.

Biography & Lore

Griffyn is the eldest son of Faulkner von Spurling, a Council merchant from Alliria. His father, following an early rise to House leadership, has offered each of his children a 'year and a day' to set out and do as they will, after which they will be required to return to Spurling Manor and take on the mantle required of them. Griffyn has a lot to learn from the road and the various people of Arethil.

His close family also consists of teenage sister and arcane enthusiast Robyn, and infant brother Altyr.
