Skills and Magic

Abjuration
Cassius is well versed in Abjuration, having spent most of his years in the College of Elbion studying it. He can cast many standard spells from this school, as well as cobble things together with a high degree of efficiency to the casting. His favorite spell from this school is Flash Shield, a spell where any time the shield is struck, it flashes bright light in the direction the attack hit.
Illusion
Cassius has spent a good deal of study into Illusion as well, finding it to be more useful both in and out of tight situations that the flashier and more combat oriented Evocation school. While his mastery of Illusion is nowhere near as developed as his skill in Abjuration, he still knows many spells in this school. His favorite spell from this school is Mirror Image where he creates multiple mirror images of himself, and can focus his voice and sounds out of multiple of those images.
Rune Magic
The latest passion of Cassius' is Rune Magic. He has only recently begun to study this style of magic, which falls out of the realm of Collegiate Magic that he has learned thus far. He only knows how to properly inscribe a handful of runes, and has only begun to attempt to combine them.
Fire Magic
As much as Cassius disdains the study of combat magic for the sake of itself, he also believes that every Mage needs to know how to defend themselves. For this, Cassius has leaned toward Fire magic, it is a versatile combat magic that allows for precision and mass conflagrations depending on the need.

Biography & Lore

History

The Early Years

Cassius' father, Quelig Ingmar, is the Marchwarden of the Vale of Ingmar, a titled Lord left over from a Kingdom long forgotten who is now beholden to the Merchant Council of Elbion. The Vale of Ingmar is a large plot of land north of Elbion, between two spurs of foothills along a river that feeds into the Cairou River. Growing up the son of a Marchwarden was an early lesson in dichotomies, he had to learn the finer niceties of courtly life, but was also expected to learn the work of their people who were foresters and farmers for the most part. Cassius' mother, Tiala, was a former Ranger of the Felwood, which lent Cassius angular features and a natural love for the outdoors.

Cassius also believes that it is because of his mother's blood that he was so strong with Magic from an early age. His mother, gifted in the nature oriented magics of the Rangers, began his tutelage as a child, but it was never a question once his magic showed up. He would be continuing his education at the College of Elbion.

The feeling of exhilaration when he cast spells drew him more and more towards magic as he grew older. When the time came to leave for the city to their south, Cassius was more than eager. His skills had surpassed his mother's fairly quickly, and spending your younger years learning the tedious skills of fine control instead of new and exciting magics had seemed to drag, though they proved useful in school.

School Years

The first lesson Cassius learned, once enrolled in the College of Elbion, was that he had no authority in Elbion. Not having thought of himself as particularly vain or arrogant, it was a stark lesson when he learned he had to do many things on his own that he had taken for granted. Cassius abhorred how unprepared he was, and he quickly began to try to tamp down the natural arrogance that seemed infused into every student of noble blood.

On the education side of things, Cassius excelled. His years learning the finer skills of precision and control from his mother allowed him to shoot ahead of other students in his year when it came to magical theory, as well as the generalized skills of Collegiate Magic. In his first pair of years he was routinely either at the top of his class or in the top three, a point of pride he tried his hardest to not gloat about.

After passing through the exams of his second year, Cassius began to focus on Abjuration as his primary "school" of magic. Where others saw a limited school devoted to defense, Cassius saw greater potential. His excellent control and precision allowed him to innovate skills that the other students hadn't thought of, though none were new to the professors. He paired his study of Abjuration with that of Illusion, and quickly excelled at both. In combat lessons, he focused his study on elemental Fire magic, believing that to be the most versatile and useful outside of combat as well. He wasn't quite a pacifist, but he always described the feeling of using magic to fight as if he were doing something wrong.

Post Grad Work

Right out of school, Cassius went into business as an arcane architect. His skills in abjuration and illusion proved quite popular when he started showing what those schools could do with the more mundane skills of hiding rooms and passages in buildings. His pride and joy was the innovation of turning a doorway into what appeared to be a magical portal akin to the portal stones. In reality, he used enchanted gems and a rune mage friend to design the door to activate a precisely calibrated series of shields and simple illusions. Turn the dial to one symbol, and it activated one gem that would produce what appeared to be a stairway up, another would show one down. A third and fourth would show corridors to the left and right, and then setting the runed knob to a neutral position would show you into a room where there was no doorway up, down, right, or left.

He worked in this business for a few years, amassing his own wealth separate of his fathers. The rune mage friend he had gone into business with decided to leave and see the world, and Cassius followed, formally closing the business to the saddening of the wealthy patrons they had accumulated. On this journey was when Cassius began to try to learn the magic of runes.

The details of his journey are not a topic he discusses widely, but Cassius has returned to Elbion alone, and he has gone from architect to adventurer and now to professor in the Abjuration school of the College. While teaching in his most versed topic, he continued to research Rune Magic.

After the events of the Templar assault on the College, Cassius submitted for and was accepted as a Maester of the First Order.
