He had crossed the Sayve river a week ago, leaving behind the lack of employment of the Allirian Reach. Allirian rangers, guards and even the scattered chapters of the Templars were the monster hunting instruments the Allirians trusted and utilized. The hunters of Elbion were...less welcomed. Especially, those with unnatural silver hair and cat-like eyes that fit into tales of monsters themselves. In the small town of Khurazan in the Taagi Baara Steppes Thane had taken a contract on the notice board regarding missing children. A few miles away from the city, at the foot of a low mound he had found the first clues.
Ghouls' dwelling, Thane concluded with a few sniffs. A stench he could recognize half a mile way from. Yet, there were no ghouls around; they could hardly hide in the endless grassland plains around and oddly enough the tracks leading to the dwelling were human. So where are they? He knelt down and rummaged through the crushed grass and found a severed child forearm. Blood had dried out not long ago, maybe a few days. Ghouls alright. Thane confirmed by inspecting the visible claw marks and unclean slice of the limb. Even a rookie with a sword would've made a cleaner cut. This was chewed on, then the chewing had abruptly stopped and the limb was left behind. Odd, it should've been far more mangled and gnawed upon. He continued inspecting and found a few more body parts - all limbs. A dozen missing children but only a few left behind limbs. It made no sense. Ghouls snatching specifically children? Coincidence, maybe. He thought not. But no remains left in their dwelling to feed on later, other than a few barely chewed on limbs? Paradox. Thane looked around more until he found the corpse of a ghoul, beneath it the corpse of a non-recognizable child. To put it in a nondescript fashion, both had become leftovers of a meal. A gruesome thought formed in his mind but he wished not to explore it yet. The bailiff of the town had some questions to answer.
He took a pink bracelet, clearly belonging to the girl, or what remained of her, and put it in his pocket. At least one family deserved a closure tonight.
On his return to see the bailiff in the early evening, he couldn't help but notice the growing excited chatter of the townsfolk. Earlier, they had been the gloomiest bunch and often cast him an evil, distrustful eye. One called him a monster but a glare from the hunter had the man packing. The town was different since he left it early in the morning. He overheard the word 'hope' being thrown around a lot in a sentence with the 'lady'. When he ventured into the inn he saw where the eyes of the patrons were pointing at.
Thane knew she was the talk of town.
