Magnus Altari sat on an oak chair, surrounded by brick walls. Papers lined his desk and the floor, which they were written in different tongues. Altari had been a resident in this citadel for quite some time. Not a prisoner, more like a volunteer to maintain the structure and research in peace. The Citadel was located on the Cortosi Coast, near Vel Anir. A life of solitude and enlightenment was something Magnus was looking for.

The old man did not delay moving his belongings into this ancient and hardened structure. Dagger-like rocks lined the shores surrounding the citadel and choppy waves crashed against the sand like thunder. The Citadel’s origin was vastly unknown and was not recorded in any known archive. The manuscripts that were housed here were all decayed beyond salvage. Magnus would trade with the people of Vel Anir as they were his closest neighbors.

Getting up from his desk, he murmured history to himself in quiet, hushed whispers. Quickly departing his desk he got up and wheeled around to descend down the stone circular staircase that would bring him deeper into the structure. The tower was where Magnus slept and researched mainly, but other rooms in the Citadel provided secrets and questions to the aging man.

“By the last era, this fortress would have been occupied by men….or...someone else?” He said with curiosity. Perhaps the fortress was not home to men, but to someone darker? Upon leaving the last step of the tower’s staircase, the old man was met with a larger room that was no doubt a library or study of some sort. Stone bookshelves hugged the walls and managed to outlast their parchment counterparts that they housed. Decayed books that had blurred text and illegible leather covers lay scattered on the floors and even the bookshelves themselves.

Living here alone was taking a toll on Magnus as he never had enough time to fully complete various research work. Cleaning the place was one of his main objectives but his research took hold of his brain and body and the place was never cleaned. Many may wonder how the aging man found this place?

It so happens that the man found this place whilst exploring the mainland. Younger in age at this point, Magnus Altari had found a curious looking book in an old ruin. The book mentioned “The Citadel” on the coast of Vel Anir that was home to various tomes and ‘underground’ knowledge. Magnus did not know how the metaphor ‘underground’ would be used in this context but nonetheless he scoured the coast for this Citadel in search of a home and place to further expand his research. Upon finding The Citadel, he was overjoyed and explored the interior as best as he could.

Going to the lowest point of the structure he would be met with an intricate door, inscribed with various runes and symbols. A dead language perhaps? It was not a tongue that he was familiar with. Underground knowledge, is this what the text meant? He did not know. Opening the door would prove to be difficult as he tried to force the door open by various spells, but to no avail.

Instead of attacking the door on this day, he would instead study the runes and perhaps seek help elsewhere. There were people on the mainland that could be more wise than he. Taking parchment paper and some charcoal, Magnus made rubbings of the doors images. He would attempt to take them to Vel Anir to find a linguist suitable enough to read the text.
