Vesper almost seemed to sense the discomfort that
Thren was in, but she never made any comment about it. If he needed to rest, she would simply suggest that they take a break. Their journey was a long one, but there was no need to rush.
Many a night was spent huddled together beneath the shelter of cured pelts, hiding from the cold and rain... but also taking comfort in one another's presence. The wild woman was quite fond of the barbarian, and she never once considered him anything less than a partner. If he worried that he was a burden, the thought never once crossed Vesper's mind.
Days stretched into weeks as the pair continued their travels together, accompanied by the two enormous raptors. As they reached the mountains, however, it soon became too cold for the creatures to endure.
With a sad smile, Vesper pulled the bridles and saddles off her beloved companions, lightly scritching each one beneath his chin. "You two do not belong on a mountain range. Best get back to the Wilds. I am sure we'll find each other again."
Sjorn, the raptor with which she shared the link, hesitated as they turned away. He pressed the top of his head against Vesper's brow, chittering quietly.
She lightly pushed on his neck, ushering him along after his brother. "Go on now."
As the daylight faded, Vesper and Thren were left alone on the mountainside. The sound of the crackling fire filled the silence that hung in the air. Taking a ragged breath, Vesper turned back to Thren and she managed a strained smile.
Saying goodbye was never easy.
"How are you feeling?" She asked, moving to take a seat next to him by the fire.
