Cinder wasn't a very well known demon among mortals. Lucky for him, demon deities didn't rely on worship like heavenly one's. Worship and disciples did empower them a great deal, but more dominant in their source of power were the actions taken by mortals.

Cinder was a demon lord of wrath and fire, under him were the barons and baronesses of betrayal, anger, and destruction, each specific aspects of his power, and thralls to their Lord's will. But they could not do what he did, not only did he embody all those things together, but he was capable of granting power to mortal followers through his teachings of demonic power.

He would give such teachings and boons to any mortal who brought him regular sacrifice, once a month usually. And any mortal who completed his teachings would be named an Archdisciple, a half human, half demon. Immortal in the sense that they could not age, but still capable of being slain. He had had a few in centuries past, some had even Impressed him with their devotion enough to be made a demon themselves, one of the Altum Daemonum, High Demons.

It was this promise of power and strength that drew men and women to him with offerings, very few received his favour. Not tonight though.

The catacombs of the city Nurum were deep, wide and labyrinthine. With altars of all kinds located in many places throughout the catacombs. He waited quietly in the depths, listening, and he heard footsteps, and the sound of something being dragged across stone. Listening further, he could tell that the thing being dragged was in fact a struggling woman, gagged by a rag to quiet her screams.

He listened further curious of what nefarious purpose her captor had.

It had been a fair bit of travel throughout the city, one that had left Shalia Ulatris in a bitter and impatient mood. She had already cursed out the guards as she passed the gates; the louts simply looked at her with the same stupid bewilderment she had come to expect from the commoners. Her brilliant blue eyes shot out daggers at them from atop her chestnut horse as she rode off, perceiving them as obstacle between herself and the bespoke gown she had been long awaiting.

Import tax, bah!” Lady Ulatris certainly had enough money to do away with this obstacle. But Rathu had raised a fine point – Why should she financially reward her own inconvenience? She had been forced, quite needlessly, to depart the comfort of her cozy villa for a simple purchase. The thought of sneaking the garment in and avoiding the tax, despite the ease with which she could pay it, would be at least a minor moral victory to her.

She continued to move on horseback into the woods, until the city’s gate was lost and obscured behind her. A faint, growing light in the dense woodlands caught her sight; a guiding beacon, and next to it stood a horse, wagon, and Rathu himself

“Here it is as I promised you, Lady Ulatris...” he stepped up ahead onto the wooden step leading to the simple but well built wagon. He disappeared into the dark and unlit interior, the sound of wooden scrapes emanating from within until he pulled a sturdy chest out to the wagon’s edge. He flashed her a wide grin of after unlocking the chest, arm outstretched to showcase the folded red cloth that was her purchase.

Yet as soon as she laid her hands upon it an insidious cackle met her ears, and intense pain shot through her arms as the garments sprang to life, wrapping around the hapless noblewoman’s wrists with a vice grip. With an evil sneer and true colours shown, Rathu proceeded to bind and gag his deluded noble victim.

“Change in plans, lady....You’re the bargain”

* * *

Steady patterned steps filled the halls, along with the chaotic scampering clatter of trapped victim, fueled by desperate delusions of her possible escape. The lady’s eyes wore an expression stamped with fear, widened at the dreadful demonic decor that adorned the twisted catacombs. Finally, his forceful hand guided her in front of one of the many altars within; and with a hefty kick square into her back she collapsed over it, unable to even scream with the wind so suddenly knocked from her lungs.

“Lord Cinder! For you, I have selected from among the most elite, the most untouchable. Plucked her from her cozy life of safety to bring her here before you! May she be eternal witness to your infinite cruelty!”

As he spoke, a terrified gasp would escape her lips as she shuddered in her bindings. Shalia shifted towards the side before a good sharp crack of Rathu’s staff straightened her out, breaking a rib in the process.

“For you, my lord...”

“For you, my lord...”

A voice, as yet bodiless, as he could manifest physically or as phantasm as he desired, rang out deep and powerful.

"A new hand brings tithe to me. And a fine sacrifice it is." The voice rang out from everywhere yet nowhere.

The altar, a broad slab of nine corners and equal length sides, was suddenly very different. Eighteen candles, wrought from segments of human spines, appeared in an orderly pattern, with long, red streaks running through them, a candle at each place where lines met. (Think nine pointed pentagram) The candles lit, the fire upon them was quite different than normal candle fire, red and angry, not yellow and calm.

"Proceed, tear her flesh from her bones, and a disciple you will be made. Let her see her fate, and let her scream."

With these words, the original bonds disappeared and each of her limbs were then chained to the altar, the gag too disappeared. And in front of him was laid a jagged but very sharp dagger, it's hilt carved from human bones.

He widened his evil grin at the words of approval from his dark, fiery lord. Rathu grasped his bound captive by the shoulder to flip the helpless woman onto her back, a pained gagged yelp echoing through the catacombs as her broken rib slammed against the stone altar. He grasped her trembling chin, turning her horrified face up to the entertainment of both warlock and master. Another muffled howl of pain rang through the halls as her limbs were so forcefully outstretched.

"Proceed, tear her flesh from her bones, and a disciple you will be made. Let her see her fate, and let her scream."

“A moment I’ve been looking forward to - Oh, we’ll have some fun, Shalia” He spoke in a tone dark and low while reaching for the dagger slowly with a wicked grin on his face. Rathu took a moment to soak up the terror and distress of his captive victim; taunting her with the knife with sadistic revelling in her helplessness.

The silence would last but a few moments more until the ceremonial dagger made it’s first plunge into flesh. A series of agonized screams then echoed throughout the catacombs: a long lasting cacophony conducted by the cruel and gleeful warlock.

The archdemon watched with a grin as the woman was cut to shreds, her life lasting as long as it might with the pain and loss of blood. When at last She was nothing but a skeleton with organs spilling out, the flesh and organs within burst into flame, and there standing behind the altar, standing at eight feet not counting the antlers, was Cinder. A skinless monstrosity with embers flying off of him.

“Beautifully done.” He then gestured with his hand to the altar, where a book had suddenly shown itself, gruesome as it was. It was made from the bones of the woman, the cover was of muscle stretched over the ribs, and the pages were of human skin. The blood had filled the purpose of ink, and within signals and writing could be found. Though it was written in such a manner, where words moved and crossed each other in patterns meant to brand the knowledge into one’s mind.

“The first book of knowledge I offer you.” He said, before suddenly his hand gripped the crown of his head, and searing pain would shoot through him. “And the knowledge of how to read it.”

The pain didn’t last longer than a few seconds, and his hand removed itself from his head. And he’d find himself capable of reading the book in front of him, a book no other mortal st that time could read.

“I will observe you disciple, as you use this knowledge to terrorize and dominate the living. Take what and who you will, and do what you desire with them, only after this book has been mastered will you need the second. Seven there are, and seven you may Master. Do this, and elite among my number will you be.”

“Go, my champion disciple, and let agony be left in your wake.”

The resulting mess of blood left hardly visible stains on his crimson robe, and Rathu took a step back to admire his own handiwork before hopping back another as Shalia’s butchered corpse. He stood in awe as the fiery burst illuminated the room, his proud grin now tinged with obedient hopefulness that his methods had proved him worthy to his prospective dark lord.

“Beautifully done.”

His grin grew wider, prouder still with praise - This was his finest hour; his hard work and endless scheming finally reached payoff. He could hardly believe it when his old contact made mention of this, but his colleague were right; both on the presence of Cinder, and the sheer gullibility of the townsfolk. Even after more than a few murders, including his colleagues, none seemed wiser.

He eyed the book like the valued, gruesome treasure it was before his attention turned immediately to Cinder at his words:

He stiffened up but for a moment before keeping a still, but strained posture. Agonizing as it was, he would never show weakness; especially not to such an infernal entity as stood before him now. Let his strength to endure this pain show his commitment to inflict his own in Cinder’s name.

“You have my dedication and commitment, Lord Cinder. This is but the beginning, great suffering and torment will follow! I’ll bring terror onto these wretched people. And the finest sacrifices.” It was a perverse joy of his to target the nobility, or the merchants. Or even the middle class; those who believed in the safety of their continued existence always screamed the loudest. And the added challenge of such targets; well, what was a man who wouldn’t take pride in his work?

Taking the book in hand, Rathu eagerly perused the pages.

“Ah, Lady Alatris. I can tell you I value your words; honestly this time..”

A good and faithful servant he was already. Proud of his chosen allegiance. Good, so long as it was not boasted to the world. Fear, terror was born proper when it was born from the unseen and unknown. Fear was more complete when the prey only saw their fate after they had already been paralyzed with dread, and such was his way.

He stiffened up but for a moment before keeping a still, but strained posture. Agonizing as it was, he would never show weakness; especially not to such an infernal entity as stood before him now. Let his strength to endure this pain show his commitment to inflict his own in Cinder’s name.

A strong one, also good. Very good. If he mastered the seventh book and became a demon as he, the transformation was nothing short of complete agony, very few actually survived due to heart failure, so the number of his demon elite was actually quite small. But the transformation left those who survived impervious to pain, and untouchable by death. Demons, immortal and vicious. He had few doubts about this man.

Cinder vanished, and the nine pointed star and candles came with him. Leaving nothing but a bare altar in dark, musty catacombs. The man was left with the book and the necessary knowledge, and he would learn.

Rathu slowly sat on the floor of the pitch-black catacombs and lit a lamp; he could hardly wait to peruse the book, nor could he think of anywhere more befitting to peruse the pages. These walls, if they could speak, would no doubt cry out in horror at what they bore witness to. His grin never left him as browsed through the occult text with the gift of infernal insight to understand the new teachings. A deep sense of pride continued as he read through the pages, a reward for his cunning, ruthlessness, and years of search. He read thoroughly, his mind drinking up each valued bit of forbidden knowledge n the pages before he finally rose from his seat on the floor with his lamp in hand.

He'd have to return to the city; though there were plenty of ways about that. Mind pouring over his fresh knowledge, he began to depart from the catacombs, already prepared to apply another magical disguise for himself for re-entry into the city. The deceased Lady Ulatris could prove useful one final time in bypassing the guards without so much as hinting at his own true involvement...

Masquerading as another was not one of the many teachings within the book, which was thick and heavy to hold. Rather this knowledge given to him was rather insight. Not just magic, but techniques and knowledge of perception, the most mortally focused of the seven tomes. The magic given was that of fire, not normal fire, fires of the abyss, which could not be quenched by water, only holy magics, and it’s many uses. The first thing that could be formed from the fire was a sword, of any shape really, and it did indeed require skill and strength to use correctly, the second being a whip, again of any form. It taught how to best instill terror into the hearts of mortals, without magic, and where the most pain can be inflicted and how to do it longest.

He would return to the city, and the guards, with their Scutum shields and segmented armor, let him pass with payment of the toll. Thus he entered the city carved from bright white limestone, constructed of pillars and arches. Statues depicting muscled men and healthy but petite women were scattered about the city, often accompanied by fountains. There were many rich people here, all humans.

A good hunting ground.

(Think the ancient city of Rome)

(Old and only spell, should have specified :) )
Deciding against the disguise in the end, Rathu moved back into the city with a toll prepared for his passage through the gates. He looked around, though still his mind was heavily distracted with the knowledge he had just recently gained. Finally, he had gained power; true, tested power brought by a dark lord. Yesterday, he would have been just a killer but now, as he walked these streets he truly knew himself as a true menace.

And none were the wiser; he would ensure that any who learned would learn far too late. Naturally, he made his way straight to one of the taverns on the main thoroughfare. A drink would be fair reward, and from here, he could plan out his next target. Taverns were a haven for those with a loud mouth and careless tongue, and what boring plans and events the patrons would speak of were valuable intelligence to his listening ears.

And so, with drink in hand and deceptively friendly smile on his face he listened in. He certainly had backup plans, several known potential victims who'd make an easy sacrifice. But one can never, ever have enough leads - his last lead had been an irate shopkeeper complaining about the stubborn and miserly attitude of an antagonistic noblewoman. Goes to show, you never know what could prove helpful; all a matter of cunning and resourcefulness. Rathu was confident he had plenty of both to serve him and Cinder well.

Black Cinders

He’d hear one of the barmaids, a slave woman, marked by and iron band above her elbow, spoke to a companion. “I hear Legatus Markus is looking to employ a mage to his household, to help teach his son I think. (Possible new disciple too, growing the crew and all). I...”

“Back to work slave, or I’ll beat your backside until there’s no skin left!” The bartender says angrily, scaring the woman back into her work. She went to Rathu’s table she asked, “Can I get you anything sir?”

He sat and listened intently to the spoken gossip, his gaze turned towards the streets. A Legatus! Oh, this could be a fine opportunity indeed. A fine victim he would make; and there was always the chance the child might be ‘too’ curious about the magical and arcane; much as Rathu was. It would surely be a name he’d have to remember, and a person he’d have to position himself to meet. A task he was surely up to.

His attention turned to the bartender as her question requested it. “Yes, a glass of red wine, please” He asked with a charming, cordial smile, listening further until she’d return with his drink and collect his payment.

Black Cinders

She nodded her understanding and went to retrieve his drink, and returned shortly after with a pitcher of wine and a glass. She was called away almost as soon as payment was received, and she went back to work.

It would be a great idea for him to take advantage of her, and squeeze the knowledge from her lips. A woman well responsive to the whip was she, and under threat of such punishment would answer him quickly,

Continued to drink his wine sip by sip. Perhaps there was further knowledge to be overheard; be it by coincidence or by the knife. And so he continued loitering at the bar, making the kindest requests to the woman when his cup ran empty. But a slave of no worth; yet her knowledge could prove valuable indeed.

All he'd need was a moment alone; if only he could follow her somewhere private without raising suspicion. Her boss was horrendous indeed; the beaten down slave may well respond to charming words of compassion; perhaps an offer of aid.

Until she too may learn that Rathu aids none but himself and his lord.

Black Cinders

The woman came over every time she was beckoned and wordlessly refilled his glass from the pitcher, and would return to serving after setting the pitcher down. The bartender had been conversing with someone since Rathu’s third glass, and the conversation took the most into the back room. A good opportunity to corner the woman and insist that she join him. If he were to rent a room, she could easily be forced to talk when she lead him up, or coaxed into sharing what she knew.

As far as an offer of aid went, she might easily be brought into the catacombs under the guise of hiding from the guards.

He continued to drink his wine, sip by sip, his attention turned towards the bartender as she became ever more engrossed in her own conversation with another. The sound of their words waned as she and her company took the continued conversation into the back room of the bar, leaving Rathu with an opportunity to seize; he did so promptly. Downing the rest of his glass would no doubt bring the slave around again; this time out of earshot of the barkeep.

“The evening grows late, could you please tell me; does this tavern have lodging available?” He asked of her in a tone most cordial, giving a pause with a smile as she confirmed that they did before politely cutting her off to modify his inquiry.

"Sure, we have-"

“Oh, yes, yes; perhaps I could see the rooms? If you would kindly lead the way and show me I’ll identify the one I’d like to rent.” He set his glass down on the table and slowly rose from his seat, following the unwitting tavern slave upstairs towards the available suites.

“Hm, can I see that one at the end of the hall first?” He requested in reference to the largest suite. “Oh, don’t worry; I’ve brought in enough coin for it. More than enough, actually.” He added, pressing a piece of silver onto the table before sliding it her way with a finger.

“But perhaps I could ask for a bit more of your time?” He’d give it a second to sink in before feigning a charming, sheepish smile.

“Oh no no, just for conversation; and only briefly. That coin? Just an investment, nothing more. I’m curious about this Legatus; I’m hopeful there’s more to be made as an arcane tutor.”

“If she catches me slacking...”

“Oh, you’re not slacking though; you’re bringing coin into her business. You’ve sold me on the most expensive room! And I truly, desperately do need new employment. A piece of silver is but nothing – well perhaps I can help you another way? For if you help me you would surely be my friend, and I’ll always reward a friend.” Rathu declared with a straight face.

He still had time to decide what to do with the slave, though given the outcome of his former colleagues, the lie he told her was a bold faced one indeed.

She looked down at the coin, her expression a mix of emotions. Afraid of her owner's wrath, while unsure about whether doing this would actually be against her mistress's wishes. She had been rented out to customers for late night entertainment on several occasions, so if she asked one of her fellow slaves to inform her that she was entertaining a guest, she'd likely be lenient at least.

She looked him in the eye, "v-very well sir. Let me inform her and I will be right up."

So she delivered the sorcerer's payment, and informed her mistress that she was entertaining a guest, then returned.

"So what is it that you want to know sir? I'm afraid I'm not very informed on the specifics, he may already have a tutor on the way. I don't know if you will be accepted, but I will share what I can."

"Oh, I just need direction is all... Anything about the legatus, really. What's he like, what's his reputation? Where I might find him too, Oh, I'll need to know that. And I know you can't guarantee employment for coin. Unless you know how I ought to bribe, hm?" He gave her a jesting smile at that, pausing for a moment to lean in a bit and speak with quieter words.

"And if coin won't do it for you, well I could offer further help. You don't want to be a slave all your life, do you? If you do have information to part with that would put an end to my unemployment, you'd make a friend. One who could put an end to your slavery... Now how often would such a rare opportunity come up?" Rathu continued to persuade her - if the slave woman had any information at all, he wanted it. Even if she herself didn't think it worthwhile, she couldn't know what the warlock was truly up to. Any tidbit of information, he knew, could be catalyst to the most devious of schemes. Hopefully, he had made an offer tempting enough for her to relieve herself of any such information; provided that she had some.

If she was desperate to leave her post, all the better. He might even spare her, it could be useful to have someone under his thumb...

The woman looked up in his face, her expression again a mix of fear and hope. Would he really do that? He seemed as though he could. If her freedom cost only some information that she had, well then how could she refuse. Her owner’s whip had gotten far more cruel than it was when she was originally purchased from the legions. From the XII legion if she remembered correctly, the legion that the legatus in question commanded.

“I’ll tell you what I know kind sir. I hope that it is to your satisfaction. If not, I truly hope that there are other ways I might help you. My owner’s whip has grown cruel, I cannot stand it any longer. Save me from this torment, and I will follow you anywhere.” She said with a voice that was hopeful but desperate.

“The Legatus’s name is Markus, of house Brutii, he commands the XII legion. He is well trained physically and a very strategically gifted man. He lives in one of the many Legati Domum, one of the many palaces throughout the city and it’s lands. I believe it is outside of the city, to the northeast, labeled XII. I myself have not been able to see it because I cannot leave the building save to purchase necessities, and even then if I’m not back within the allotted time I go to the post. But you can ask anyone out that way where it I said and they will be able to point you in it’s direction. He is very picky about who he hires, slaves aren’t paid, but people he hires are required to have some level of skill at least, so I advise preparation.” She said quietly so that none may hear them. She told him a few more details, though they were mostly just specifics on details already given.

When she was done she looked down and then pulled her knees together. “That’s all I have. Can I help you with anything else sir?”

Her expression and look hinted that he had plucked the right strings after all; he'd give another look of compassion as he awaited her word, nodding slowly and empathetically at her request.

"You have my word I'll deliver you from this hell." he reassured her before listening intently to the information that followed with a nod. "Hmm, a strategist. Might be tricky, but I might be able to play to his confidence...Ah, like he's even expecting the knife in times of peace" He thought as she continued, making note of this destination's general location.

When she was done she looked down and then pulled her knees together. “That’s all I have. Can I help you with anything else sir?”

"Oh, you've done wonderfully - that does help. I always like knowing who I'm going to be meeting ahead of time - negotiations you know. I can certainly help you escape as I promised; might be best for us to wait a few hours until the tavern keeper gets to sleep."

"And I've paid for your time this evening – Well maybe we can get to know each other better until she does? For a start; I'm Rathu. And pleased to meet you." He paused with a slightly teasing grin, eyeing the slaves reaction as he waited to hear her name.

"To continue – well, we've this bed here all to ourselves.." He gestured along with the hint, one far from subtle.

She blushed, for once it wasn’t being ordered, but suggested. “I’m Iris. Equally pleased.”

He gestured to the bed, and obediently removed her clothing and got onto the bed, her face down, on her knees and her arms crossed behind her. “Have me however you want me.”

He looked her over with a grin as he disrobed and headed towards the bed, the two had their fun well into the night. It had grown rather late by the time their spontaneous tryst had come to an end; the city was at it's quietest by now. They could count on most of the city folk to keep quiet for a few hours more.

"Iris, you are the best, love. But the night's growing to a close; if we're to make a bid for your freedom we must move now. Take my cloak - it's imported linen, I trust you'll find it comfortable. No guard will stop you in such a fine garment. And it does look lovely on you.." He added, ever keeping up the charm. Fun and useful this girl was. And willing to follow him - she may have further use yet, plotted the mind of Rathu.

He stepped to the door and checked to make sure the hall was clear before beckoning her over, guiding her out of the tavern next should it be empty. An alley or lesser road would be ideal to travel upon. So long as they got out of eyesight of the place of escape they should be in the clear, he mused. She seemed to trust him, he had no need to do away with her. She might be nice to keep for a few days; perhaps even introduce to Cinder. Be it the hard way, or if she shows promise enough for a pact, perhaps the easy way. Once he'd make off with her, there'd be plenty of time.

She wrapped herself gratefully in the cloak. “Thank you, truly. There is nothing I can say to accurately express my gratitude. But thank you. Tonight was... well... wonderful.”

She followed him closely, and stay with him she would if he asked, she didn’t have much other option, as now that she was free, where would she go from there? And while Cinder did appreciate sacrifice, he definitely needed disciples, and those who had suffered were prime material. He could easily play her desire for vengeance, and her teaching skills would begin like his. And for that, he’d accept her former owner be her sacrifice to him for her book.
