"He's Luana, then?"

"Hmph, barely. His father is a cousin, but his mother... unremarkable. A medic, if you can believe it. By that point the blood is so diluted you can scarcely consider him a part of that family.

"I suppose not. It's unusual though, for somebody in that echelon of society to wed somebody so pedestrian."

"I never said they wed, did I?"

"...I see."

"It doesn't matter who you are or where you come from. People fall to temptation. The nobles are just better at covering it up."

"So why hasn't Yuric been covered up?"

"Because of what he can do. The kid's got something, even we don't understand it yet. That, and a boulder-sized chip on his shoulder. Soon as he was old enough, he ran away from his mom and came to us. That doesn't happen often."

"I guess even a little Luana blood can give you an edge."

"Yeah, maybe. Just keep an eye on him, alright? Too much attention and I have no doubt his dad will raise a fuss."

"That would be very bad. For Yuric, especially."

Appearance

Yuric is a dark-skinned young man with long black hair and deep blue eyes. Most often his clothes match his eye color, his favorite ensemble being a blue coat over an identically-covered button-up and trousers, though casually he wears more ordinary clothes underneath his coat.

Yuric bears markings on his forehead that appear to be placed there by the hands of another. Bizarrely, this is not so. The symbols appeared on his flesh on the day that his powers began to manifest, and have only grown more prominent as his talents and abilities broaden.

When communing or channeling with the spirit world, Yuric's appearance alters slightly. He attains an ethereal blue glow around him, emanating from his eyes. His pupils narrow to cat-like slits, and his hair acquires an unusual sheen to it. These vanish when he is no longer using his powers.

Skills and Abilities

Yuric has the unique ability to fully interact with the realm of the dead. He can see and speak with the spirits of the deceased, and even physically touch them in ways most corporeal forms are unable to. Additionally, he has the power to pull things from the spirit realm into the land of the living, for a limited time.

Conversely, he can also send things from the living world into the spirit realm, within a reasonable size and scale. This does not work on living things; Yuric cannot use his powers to prematurely send any creature to the afterlife.

An additional perk of this power is that it allows Yuric to see through many illusions and traps; The Spirit Realm often differs from our own, and having two perspectives on the world around him offers Yuric insight that his partners and foes may not possess.

Aside from his magic, Yuric is also experienced in medicine, and is a skilled medic thanks to training from his mother. This makes him very useful to have around on missions, where he can ease wounds with a fine hand other Initiates may not have.

He is talented with traditional weapons, his preference being polearms. While not as formidable as some of his upperclassmen and beyond, he is a force to be reckoned with among his class in magic-free combat.

Personality

Yuric is an aloof young man, often struggling to connect with those around him. This can be attributed to several factors, chiefly his intrinsic need to prove himself to others. Well aware of the discourse surrounding his origins and bloodline, Yuric seeks to perform his way out of any preconceived notions about himself, no matter the cost.

This is not the only side of him, however. Yuric seems keenly aware of the happenings around him, even those he is not supposed to know about. He holds a very strong desire to help maintain the peace within his home and abhors the harming of innocents. The fact that he fled home to enroll in the Academy by his own volition is a testament to his motivation towards making a difference.

It is possible that communing with the dead has warped Yuric's psyche slightly. Desensitized to death at a very young age, both by his power and his mother's position as a medic, he does not seem to hold his life in as high regard as he probably should, and often speaks of the deceased as though they are not such.

Biography & Lore

Yuric was born surrounded by death.

The illegitimate son of a cousin of House Luana and a medic named Erris, the first thing that Yuric saw after birth was his mother. The second was the corpse of the man she'd just failed to save because she'd gone into labor mid-treatment. Even though he'd been in the world only seconds, he can still recall that image as crisp as day. It would set the tone for his entire childhood.

During his youth, Yuric would travel with his mother and help her with her work, learning the art of medicine and caring for the sick and wounded. Many times, his aide allowed his mother to successfully treat and cure her charges. Of course, some patients were simply a lost cause. Witnessing these deaths as such a young age had a profound effect on Yuric, and often he would bemoan the idea that life must end, questioning the necessity of death to his mother.

Erris answered as best she could, but saw no real issue with Yuric's fascination with mortality. That is, until he began speaking to her lost patients after they'd expired.

At first, Erris worried that her son was being driven mad by the difficult upbringing she'd put him through. Then, Yuric would begin to talk with her about things he shouldn't know, that he couldn't possibly know. A soldier would perish in her care, and young Yuric would ask her about the battlefield, the motivations behind the battles.

Yuric's mother then realized what was likely occurring, and decided to tell the young man about his father, about the blood in his veins. She explained that he was, distantly, of Luana descent, a beloved and powerful House that often spawned talented and mighty men and women.

The young man did not take the revelation well. He'd long dreamed of meeting with his father, of being a part of his life and having a more complete family. To hear that the man wanted nothing to do with him, that he'd probably prefer Yuric not exist at all, was devastating.

Only a few weeks later, on the morning of his birthday, Yuric fled his home, leaving only a note behind to explain his motivations to Erris.

Dearest Mother,

Do not fear for me, I leave you not forever.

It has become clear to me over these last several weeks that this life is not what I was born for. I am not meant for medicine. The blood that runs through my veins, however diluted, calls me to greatness.

I am going to the Academy, to seek enrollment as an Initiate. I've long known that I must have these gifts for a reason, and now I understand what that reason is. I will hone my power, and learn to be a warrior beyond all compare.

I will not be condemned to life as a secret of the rich and powerful. Through the will of my own two hands, I will become an undeniable fact. My father will rue the day he left us behind, and when I have become powerful and mighty, you will reap the benefits before I.

With love,

-Yuyu
