Appearance

Verys is a petite young woman, slim of figure, obviously not used to hard labor but certainly not of a noble lineage. Her emerald eyes are bright and curious, though just as often faraway and distant as she's lost in thought. She's pale, with obvious freckles, her red hair often twisted back into a bun or plaited in an obvious attempt to keep it tidy. It rarely works, strands always seeming to escape at every point, compounded by the fact that Verys is prone to twirling her hair around one finger in a nervous or fidgety gesture.

Her clothes mark her as middle of the middle class -- nice enough to not be threadbare or worn, but not nearly nice enough to mark her as anyone of note. Despite her garb, she always seems to have ink smudged on her cheek and fingers smudged with charcoal from marking sticks.

Skills and Abilities

Verys is the only daughter in a family of six, meaning that most of the 'womanly' work fell to her. Unfortunately for the entirety of the rest of her family, she proved utterly and completely terrible at said 'womanly' duties. Under Verys's watch, stews boil to black bricks, holes in sleeves get hemmed so the sleeve is shut, and laundry left out to dry is forgotten until the wind snatches it and flies it all away. It was so bad that her father hired his family a part-time helper in the form of Nan Gray, an elderly widower.

For all of her inability to perform domestic tasks, Verys proved a natural when it came to the more book-keeping parts of her family's business. Fishsprout, as a town, boasts two things -- first, the supply of fish schools that just seem to "sprout" up out of nowhere, giving the town its name. Second, as the only real safe harbor on a long stretch of coast line that is mostly rocks and dangerous under-eddies but vital for goods and traffic to get to Alliria. Verys's family is a third generation merchant family, specializing in navigating the rocky area of their coast and moving goods towards Alliria proper. Keeping track of shipping manifestos and cargo lists, maintaining the business's cache of maps, as well as tracking payments and schedules all ended up falling to Verys, as someone with a knack for numbers and writing. Her four older brothers were more interested in the seafaring and adventuring side -- Verys was happy to bury herself in scrolls and books and learn everything at her fingertips. Especially if it meant that she didn't have to do laundry or other chores.

This means that as far as small-town country bumpkins go, Verys is surprisingly well-read and well-educated -- in certain areas. She can do math, navigations, read several different languages besides Common, and write passably in those languages. Books are rare where she's from so she hoards them enthusiastically whenever she comes in possession of one -- though even with that voracious appetite her personal collection stands at a paltry eight books.

Personality

Verys is curious, bright, friendly, and a bit of a clutz (ok, a huge clutz). She is endlessly interested in learning and knowledge, and displays a voracious appetite for discovery. As the youngest (sheltered) daughter of a middle-class merchant she hasn't known too much hardship in her life, coming from a sleepy, boring little town, which means that her naturally optimistic and enthusiastic nature has been allowed to bloom unfettered. Because of this, she can be overly rash and sometimes doesn't actually think through things before acting. It wouldn't be incorrect to assign the quality of 'naive' to her, though its more born from her deeply held belief that everyone around her is good and kind, no matter their outer layers.

Biography & Lore

Verys was born, the youngest daughter after four sons, to a third generation merchant family in the small town of Fishsprout. Growing up she struggled to find her place in her family -- after her mother died when Verys was only eight, it was expected that Verys would take over all of the duties her mother had fulfilled. Unfortunately, Verys was much more comfortable in her father's large office surrounded by scrolls and maps and adding machines, and eventually (after losing yet another entire load of laundry when Verys forgot to bring it back in from the drying lines) her father employed a local widow, Nan Gray, to take care of the domestic tasks.

Freed to finally explore what she was truly interested in, Verys threw herself into learning the book-keeping and minutia of running her family's business energy. The more she learned, however, the more she realized how much there was that she didn't know. She begged her father and her brothers to bring her books or scrolls, anything, from the outside world, or to take her to Alliria so that she could experience more for herself, but her pleas fell mostly on deaf ears. As she got older and more determinedly buried in her own little world of numbers and daydreams, her father began to get more and more concerned. Verys didn't seem interested in courting or being courted, often oblivious to the advances of the young men who sought to secure a position within her father's fairly well-to-do business.

Oblivious to both Nan Gray's attempts to guide her and her father's ever-more blunt hints, Verys was blindsided when, the day after her eighteenth birthday, her father introduced her to her husband-to-be, a steady if perhaps a bit bland young man by the name of Antony. Verys refused -- loudly. Her father, in a rare fit of actual anger with his precious daughter, hollered back.

Furious at her father's lack of understanding, determined not to be resigned to living her entire life never having left Fishsprout, and emboldened by the tales of mighty adventurers, Verys waited until everyone else was asleep, packed her bag full of food, clothes, and writing materials, and snuck out. She had so much to learn, after all, she didn't have time for a husband. Not when there were still so many books to read!
