A former slave who volunteered for military service in the newly formed Black Guard, Vahra remembers little of her family and homeland from a life of slavery at a young age. Accustomed to working the mines for the Drow, she now serves in their military in exchange for her eventual freedom.

Appearance

Vahra's dark complexion and piercing eyes are usually the first thing most notice. Once accustomed to slave's rags, she now wears the uniform and armor of the Black Guard, though she often tends to wear accessories often considered "primitive" by most. While technically not against regulations, the braided hair set with metal rings, bone beads, and other such baubles tend to catch a mild amount of disapproval at times, though set her apart from her comrades for good or ill.

Skills and Abilities

A lifetime of hard labor has made her body strong and tough while the constant fighting underground against subterranean beasts, deep dwelling raiders, and the treatment at the hands of her masters has left her demeanor calm, controlled, and arguably jaded. Her training as one of the first of the new Black Guard has given her skills with sword and shield, pike and halberd, and the ubiquitous crossbow.

Personality

Quiet and polite, Vahra is neither friendly nor aloof. She is persistent and dogged, often ignoring danger of all stripes, but also knows when a cause is lost. She is constantly thinking and observing now that she has the freedom to do so, often putting her mind to use within her new roles. She sees herself as neither slave nor free woman, but as something in between. A professional slave or enslaved soldier, perhaps, but knowing the alternatives and the chances of freedom and survival, she opts to keep on her path. If her ideas and concepts save some lives along the way, including hers, then to her mind her chances improve across the board.

Biography & Lore

Vahra was taken a slave during a raid as a child. Her family and homeland have long since faded in her memory, but she remembers her mother wearing colored baubles in her hair with the clan tartan worn as a sash and that the weather was almost always hot and usually dry outside of the rainy season. For most of her life, she dwelled underground as a Drow slave. Assigned to toil in the mines and shafts crisscrossing underground, she carried rocks and water until she was old enough to bear children. After her first child, she tried persuade her overlords to assign her to the only alternative for work - the mines - and, after a second daughter and a difficult birth, they finally assigned her to the mines for hard labor.

Mine collapses, subterranean monsters, occasional raids by underground dwellers, and the ever present oppression of her Drow masters ground thoughtful obedience and a quiet acceptance of bloodshed into her, though her spirit was ultimately unbroken. Known to face danger pragmatically and to wield a pick against rock and living (occasionally unliving) things with equal skill, it was no surprise when she signed up for the Black Guard the moment the crier finished the Queen's announcement.

Grueling conditions, physical strain, and harsh treatment hounded her throughout her training, but she took to blade, pike, and crossbow with quick fingers and critical eye. Her sharp mind and ability to function despite danger or overwhelming circumstances marked her for more than a simple rank and file soldier. She was given the highest rank a slave could earn within the Black Guard fresh out of training and contentedly etched the Lieutenant's rank onto her breastplate.

Currently, Vahra and her daughters reside with the rest of her Black Guard regiment in Bhathairk, awaiting orders from the Drow Queen.
