Trista (Tris), was born in the ashen, volcanic city of Tyr during a tumultuous period of its history. Her family once belonged to a prestigious and influential house that held power within the city. However, the tides of fortune turned against them when Tris' father, driven by misguided ambition and a thirst for power, betrayed the formidable King Drakkos in an attempt to gather forces and overthrow him.

The consequences of her father's betrayal were severe, and he paid the ultimate price, facing execution for his crimes. Tris, along with her mother and older sister, were captured and forced into a life of servitude within the walls of the King Drakkos' Royal Palace. Stripped of their status and freedoms, they became slaves, their lives now bound to the whims of their captors. Tris now carries two brands on the back of her neck, that of the slaves, and that of a traitor's blood.

Within the confines of the palace, Tris's path led her to the side of Princess Calliope, who would soon become her closest confidante and dearest friend. As a handmaiden to the princess, Tris served her with unwavering loyalty, finding solace in their shared experiences and the unbreakable bond they forged in the face of adversity. Their friendship became a source of strength for both of them, providing solace in the midst of their constrained existence.

However, fate intervened once again, reshaping Tris's role within the palace. The authorities decided that the young women had grown too close in friendship, and ignored Calliope's plea to free Tris from her bonds. Instead, she was reassigned to serve the palace physician, in recognition of her intelligence and aptitude for learning. Tris embraced this new responsibility with both trepidation and curiosity. Under the guidance of the palace physician, she began to explore the intricate world of medicine, developing a fascination for the healing arts.

As Tris delved deeper into her studies, her desire for knowledge grew insatiable. She sought to not only excel as a servant but to gain insights into the inner workings of the palace. Princess Calliope, recognizing Tris's potential and loyalty, entrusted her with a secret mission—to serve as her eyes and ears, gathering information and keeping her informed of the palace's machinations.

Balancing her roles as a learner, a servant, and a spy, Tris navigated the intricate web of palace politics, careful not to arouse suspicion. She remained committed to her duty to the princess, reporting back with discreet and valuable information that could influence the course of events within the palace walls.

In her quest for knowledge, Tris sought to absorb everything she could from the palace physician, both medical expertise and insights into the workings of power. She acquired knowledge of herbs, remedies, and medical techniques, gradually becoming a proficient healer in her own right. This dual role of a spy and an apprentice to the physician allowed her to navigate the complex labyrinth of palace intrigues, wielding knowledge as her greatest weapon.

As the oppressive weight of slavery bore down upon her, Tris remained determined to rise above her circumstances. She dreamed of a day when she could free herself, her family, and all those suffering under the iron grip of tyranny.
