"Solving problems through applications of force and engineering."
-Kor Gorum Saying

Thyrgrim Kurlthayne is an unusual Dwarf, when held against the examples of his people from Kor Gorum, where he was born and raised. Normally insular, even with other Dwarves, Thyrgrim instead insists on walking the land in search of aiding the populations of the world.

Overview

Physical Description

Thyrgrim is about average height for a dwarf, and heavily muscled. His hair is kept at medium length, and braided back to fit within a helmet, while his beard is a bit longer and braided for ornamentation. His eyes are a dark gray, iron like color, with red specks within the iris.

He is typically armored, wearing at the very least a coat of plates, and dressing up to wear Dwarven plate armor when he is expecting trouble. He can also be found with his axe and crossbow close at hand, the weapons carved with intricate runes.

Biography

Early Years

Born and raised among Dwarves in the Hold of Kor Gorum on the shores of Crobhear Lake. His father ran one of the hold's most productive smithies, producing much of the weapons and armor for the hold guards and for export. Thyrgrim didn't see a Human or Elf until his 18th year. By then, he was already training to fight for his hold, as all Dwarves in his hold were expected to defend their kin if the need arose. From the age he could wield a hammer or axe, he spent time training. When he was old enough to crank a crossbow for himself, he began to train in that as well.

Engineers Apprentice

By his thirtieh year, Thyrgrim was working alongside his Father and older siblings in the forges, learning the craft of smithing and engineering. As all Dwarves in the hold are expected to serve a certain amount of time as active guardians, he also continued to train with the weapons of his people, and took to the axe like a fish to water. During his time as an engineers apprentice, he learned from some of the holds greatest warriors.

When not sharpening his axe skills, he learned from his father how to apply his mind to issues and find ways to build his way through problems, rather than the stereotypical Dwarven way of bashing and smashing his way through the problem. Alongside his father, he assisted in engineering a rapid fire ballista for use on the walls to defend the hold. Thyrgrim himself was the one who solved the ammunition supply issue by compartmentalizing bolts into a crate that fed the ballista every time the coiled wire was brought back past a certain point. This meant the siege engineers needed to only replace the crate every ten bolts, rather than manually load every bolt.

In the World

His home holdfast being in a well defended position, with few other cities or holds able to say the same. Thyrgrim decided to leave. Despite the traditions of his hold to disdain the majority of the outside world, Thyrgrim made the decision that when he finished his apprenticeship he would travel the land and to aid the peoples therein with their problems, and travel the rest of the world to see what engineering improvements he could discover.

Character

Personality Traits

Focused - When you give Thyrgrim a problem that can be solved with engineering or the use of brute force, he will put all of his mind and willpower to do just that.

Kor Born - Kor Gorum is a fairly wealthy Dwarven Hold, with access to Crobhear Lake through the Hold's Water Gate, and deep veins of platinum within their mountain. Most Dwarves born into this city are fairly well off, and fairly insular. Thyrgrim was raised well off, and is fighting his insular habits.

Skills and Abilities

Axe Master - Thyrgrim is the best axeman the Hold of Kor Gorum has seen in many centuries, wielding the hafted weapon as if it were an extension of his body. The expertise extends a bit to other hafted weapons, such as glaives, polearms, and spears.
Rudimentary Runecraft - As part of his education, he was taught rudimentary runes to use in crafting his arms and armor. He is not versed enough to be able to improvise them like some of the best runecrafters, but he can add them to objects to assist in their roles.
