Appearance

Silver on not being a Komodo: ‘I mean, it’s not surprising that people often mistake me for a Komodo, that’s the only comparison literally anyone has and what do other races know? But don’t let an actual Komodo catch you calling me that, ooof. If any of them pay more than a minute of attention to me they’ll end up questioning how I’m alive since I seem to have extreme-scale rot from having no scales whatsoever other than my hands, tail and horns, Clou Disease in parts of my eyes yet not being blind and making them look like regular brown human eyes, slight Hollow Bone Disease because I’m about as delicate as a human, and Stage 3 Frond’s Syndrome to boot meaning no venom. Because the only things I have in common with them is my curved black horns, clawed hands, pointed ears, and weird violet skin tone without the scales, making it feel like human skin. I also do seem to have better senses than other races, particularly in the dark, and a good ol Komodo iron stomach (though that might be from childhood lets-not-starve desperation). And I guess a tail, though it’s not like any tail I’ve seen being all thin and snake-like with a weird point at the end. But in the end, there are so many more differences. Being a weirdo with no scale armour, no slit eyes, weak bones, no traces of venom glands at all, five finger digits, human-like feet, human tongue, human teeth, and warm-blooded to boot. My hair isn’t even near the same colour as my skin, it’s freaking silver! Oh, and did I mention that I’m not a hermaphrodite? Yup, fully male. This is confirmed, though my gender can still be debated with my clothes on. Also, I have freckles. WHAT KIND OF KOMODO HAS FRECKLES?! Anyways, this all means that most Komodo would have to say I’m not one of them. And I agree. But I’m obviously not any of the warm-blooded races humanoid. Then what am I?’

Skills and Abilities

General Skills: As someone who travels far and wide Silver had a good range of survival skills for various types of terrain, the plains being where he is most skilled. Since he’s a rather sociable person Silver has general knowledge and lore about many places on the continent and even a bit of information on local politics. Hunting monsters is usually what he does as an adventurer he has good knowledge of them and tracking skills. Gifts he tends to keep under wraps are his less law-abiding ones, such as is lockpicking skills, roof running, sleight of hand, voice throwing and changing skills. He is particularly gifted in stealth, with the shadow seemingly covering his every move. And while people are often reluctant to be seen with him Silver has honed his social skills greatly and can be quite the smooth talker and con artist if he needs to be, along with a wide web of social connections all around the continent. Apart from that Silver is also a gifted storyteller, dancer, singer and player of many stringed instruments.

Martial Skills: Silver is very skilled in his staff work and is even able to use it to cast magic. He is all but a trained acrobat and usually uses his staff to vault around his foes to confuse them. He is also skilled in using the knives he keeps hidden on her person, both in close and ranged combat. Silver also knows the basics of other polearms. He is able to use swords, particularly scimitars, but is not overly skilled with them.

Elemental Magic: Silver knows basic elemental magic. He uses the Flame Element to create balls of fire in his hands and warm his body or others. It is the Element he has the least control over though The Air Element is used to blow out a gust of air from his hands or lift him 10 feet from the ground. The Earth Element is used to make walls of earth up to 6 feet tall and 10 feet wide, and throw medium-sized rocks. The Water Element is the one he uses most and can even transform into the Ice Element, though it needs its own source like Earth. Regularly used he can lift globes of water and shape them at will, then freeze them as needed, often creating hurried weapons suck as swords or ice spikes. He can even do rituals with water, such as scrying or using its mists to create minor illusions. It is the element he has the most control over.

Shadow (?) Magic: Whenever he is scared, upset, or in grave danger Silver finds the shadows around him lashing out in tendrils and shielding him from harm. He is wary of this strange magic and has not put the effort into controlling it or using it on his own.

Personality

If one could describe Silver’s personality in three words it would be easy-going, cheerful and sly. Despite being disliked by most humans and other races for either being a Komodo or a false Komodo, Silver retains a cheerful and sociable persona, willing to talk and laugh with anybody willing to do the same with him, while he doesn’t make permanent friends easily he’s always willing to build a pleasant connection of mutual benefit. He loves to share stories and songs with others, happily making merry and inviting people to dance. Silvers’ a bit of a flirt, smooth and charming when he feels in control, flustered and shy when people turn the tables on him, making him naturally court the meek type. He’s not easily frightened, easily staring down vicious monsters or armed groups, but quick to escape if necessary. He does hold respectable wariness of his shadow magic and educated mages, especially elven ones due to a bad experience and said magic. And while he tries to crush it down, Silver is quite curious and nosy, often poking others for information while trying to stay out of trouble. The horned man doesn’t have much of a temper or hold grudges due to his easy-going ways built up by his freeform travelling lifestyle, yet doesn’t simply forget slights either, keen to notices the habits and personalities around him. Because despite not being well-educated Silver is a clever young man, and has trained himself to spot the lies and deceit of those around him just as well as he can lie and device others.

When it comes to morals Silver is rather self-serving, knowing well the feeling of betrayal and abandonment he tends to put his own survival high on his moral list. But that doesn’t mean he’s unreliable or willing to abandon others. To maintain positive contact, he knows sometimes he has to risk his own hide to gain others' trust, and nothing sours other people than abandoning when they need you. He also highly values teamwork and getting along with others, making him unlikely to betray others unless he has reason to believe they will betray him, yet still keeping friendly teammates as a personal distance in case of such an event. Ultimately the reason he has such sly morals is due to a fear of letting people close to him abandon, persecute or betray him as others had done in the past. Silver’s race and status as a Komodo is an especially sore spot, one that can actually make him angry if poked too hard. In truth, he would like to be more trusting and kinder to strangers, thus make some actual friends, but the paranoia grips him too hard. Loyalty is a near-incomprehensible concept for him as he is since most people around him were also very self-serving. He has walls, but due to his cheerful and easy-going demeanour, it’s hard for people to realize there are even walls to climb.

Biography & Lore

Silver was raised under another name, given to him by the Komodo tribe that took care of him in his early childhood. The tribe had similar features as Silver, violet skin and black horns backwards at least, and thought of the baby that was given the hem by a cloaked stranger was abandoned by another tribe for having some deformed features, most of which they assumed from being a half breed from another lizard race, not fully present as a baby, or would gain more Komodo features as he grew. This hope started to fade as Silver grew older and stranger, seeming more and more like the hated human race than their own kind, and due to some strange instances around him involving shadows, the tribal people were convinced the spirits and gods cursed the child. When the boy grew old enough to fend for himself at the age of 7, they paid a travelling caravan to carry him to another location where is relatives were supposedly set to meet him. The caravan did so, but no relatives came for the boy and in an act of compassion took Silver in and trained the boy in various ways. From the scouts, Silver learned how to survive in the various wilds, track protentional prey and lose potential foes, all while remaining unseen. He experimented with magic and learned how to wield his favourite weapons under the guiding hands of the caravan’s mercenaries. He learned how to charm and bargain under the elbow of the caravan merchants. And at night when everyone was together, he learned how to tell stories, sing, dance, and share happy company with others. But most of all, from the reactions of all he met including other Komodi, Silver learned that not all hated him for his unusualness but that he should be wary of those who do.

But when the horned boy turned 12 the caravan fell on hard times and had to disband, leaving Silver abandoned and penniless in the bustling streets of Alliria. It is there he formally changed his name to Silver Grimmire and began to learn less socially acceptable tasks from the other street urchins thanks to his ability to charm and bargain with them, and also because they shared statuses as unwanted. He went on a few years like this, stealing, conning and pickpocketing to get by until the law caught up to him a bit too much after he and some friends tried to burglar a noble’s mansion and had bounty posters put up for them.

Silver was forced to flee the city until things cooled down, and at the age of 16 became a full-fledged traveller again. He joined caravans that accepted him as a guard or performer, honing his skills until he was versatile with a staff, could cast decent spells, and could surprise people with his ventriloquist skills. Things went overall well for Silver during that time, other than a few people having problems over his questionable race or over thinking he’s a Komodo, and a few years passed with relative peace and lots of networking. But it wasn't completely free of trouble as something within Silver was growing stronger. Throughout his life, Silver has been plagued by a secret magic that seemed to come to him naturally yet he had no control over it. Whenever he had high emotions like fear or anger, or when he was simply in great danger, the area around him got dark and the shadows around him came alive, protecting him while lashing out as anybody near, and it seemed to get worse as he grew older.

Such an episode happened in Elbion when he was 19 and was faced with the betrayal of someone he saw as a friend, with a few mages from the academy to witness and even an elven magical master. They accused him of being a Shadowmacer and despite Silver’s protests of not knowing what that even meant, he was arrested on the spot. He spent days in a dungeon, being questioned and terrorized into using his shadow magic. They also noticed how he wasn’t actually a Komodo, but couldn’t recognize what race he actually was, prompting scholarly curiosity. A few students were kind enough to explain to Silver why they found him so odd but once they and some proposed experimenting on him, something which Silver didn’t understand the context of but definitely didn’t like the implication, the horned man decided to escape. In a fit on desperation he reached out to the unknown shadow magic and it pulled him out of the dungeon. When he emerged Silver was half-blind, felt very weak, and was very sick all while stuck in the middle of know here with no supplies. It took over a week for Silver to fully recover, and he barley survive the experience due to the mixture of exposure, starvation, said physical weaknesses, and monsters in the area. It took him another few weeks to get back to civilization that didn’t aim pitchforks at him, which was, unfortunately, Elbion itself again. Using all the skills he had in his disposal Silver stayed hidden, gathered funds, and left Liadain to Epressa as fast as he could.

The experience was horrifying but did cause him to think on the way back to his home continent. What exactly was Silver? Where did he come from? And what did this weird magic have to do with it? With that in mind Silver resolved to start his search for the truth when he reached Epressa’s shores, starting with tracking down the Komodi tribe that raised him.
