A proud warrior of the Kesi Brood, now roaming for worldly experience that may better supplement her tribe's survival.

Appearance

Shai'Rel is a bipedal humanoid reptilian with digitigrade legs with three deadly claws on each. True to her reptilian heritage, she has lizard-like, scaly skin with small rounded spines running down her back from the neck to the tip oh her tail. Her frontal scales are a few shades lighter.

As with the rest of her species, she is androgynous and a hermaphrodite, meaning there is hardly any dimorphism to start with. Although due to their general build, and the lack of the chest bumps that mammalians possess, they are generally seen as male.

However most of these details are hidden under cloth and metal armor. Being cold-blooded, a Kesi normally wears clothing that traps heat, especially when journeying to the cold north to scavenge the leavings of battle for metals.

Shai'Rel's own set of armor consists of padded hempen garments under metal armor, the composition of which is unknown even to the smith as the metal used to forge it were scraps and looted pieces of armor and weapons from the Blightlands, but the color is reminiscent of bronze. The breastplate has the image of a dragon, and the interior has etched runes which, when activated, produces warmth in case Shai'Rel had an extended stay in the Blightlands. The red gems on some pieces on her armor aren't gems at all, but rather resin baubles that serve as good luck charms and as a reminder of home. It also serves as a marker for other Kesi to know that a certain piece of armor belonged to one of their own, in the event they would come across it on a battlefield.

Skills and Abilities

Combat Prowess -- Shai'Rel, as with the rest of the Kesi Brood, is born to be a warrior. Her weapon of choice is the sword lance, a weapon that her people traditionally uses with deadly efficiency, paired up with a shield. She also has a dagger but that used more for its utility such as skinning prey. She is also effective with slings, though she would need to remove a pauldron as it limits her arm's articulation.

Runic Blade -- Her swordlance is decorated with etchings of runes that can be activated to coat it with fire for a time.

Limited Blood Manipulation -- Limited in the sense that she can only move the blood that is touching her blade. This is mostly used to fill the rune etchings to activate the runes.

Warm Armor -- There are runes hidden underneath her breastplate that makes the armor radiate heat inwardly when the temperature gets too low.

Cold-Blooded -- Shai'Rel is unable to maintain body heat, and must rely on different means to keep herself warm, otherwise she may fall into hibernation. Drops in her regular body temperature makes her more sluggish and less able to react.

Tracker -- All kesi are hunters before they are warriors. Shai'Rel has innate senses when it comes to tracking down her prey, mostly attributed to the synesthesia inherent to kesis boosting certain stimuli. Unfortunately, overwhelming scents tend blind them to a degree.

Personality

Shai'Rel is well-meaning but brash and keeps herself guarded at all times even amongst allies. Having been raised as a warrior, she despises appearing weak to outsiders and treats every threat seriously, leaving no room for mercy once steel is drawn.

It is the belief of the Kesi that should they pass on from the material world, their souls are reincarnated as another warrior. As such, Shai'Rel, much like the other members of the brood, don't fear death. Rather they fear their friends' death, should they not be Kesi, as they are not reincarnated like them. This makes them fervent protectors. Shai'Rel is no exception to this and would gladly bleed for anyone she considers a friend.

Biography & Lore

Shai'Rel was born in her tribe's ancient home of Val Sel'Torii within the central Ixchel Wilds, raised with a weapon in hand to draw out the warrior spirit from her past life. As with all Kesi, she started out as a hunter, taking down prey with sword lance and sling, the quarry steadily becoming more and more dangerous as she matured her skills. On her sixth year, nearing the height of her growth, she was sent to the North West, where the Kesi lived among the Y'Tor, a tribe of kobolds who provided multiple services for the Kesi (such as smithing and armor fitting) in exchange for their warriors acting as the tribe's guardians.

In the past, a pact was made between the Kesi Brood and the Y'Tor when Blight Orcs appeared in the Wilds and began despoiling nature. As was the union of the Kesi Brood and the serpentine tribes of Slen'tolah to the south when the Naga began encroaching on their territory.

While living with the Y'Tor, she mostly did hunting for the tribe and taking part in excursions to the Blightlands to gather abandoned weapons and armor so they may be reused. Most of her fighting experience came from these excursions, when they would happen upon Blight Orcs picking through a fresh battlefield. Encounters with other races were rare, and the Kesi would wear cowls and cloaks to disguise themselves.

Her first proper encounter with other races was when a number of slaves were chased to the Wilds by their Blight Orc masters. Seeing the slaves as not a threat, they were brought to the kobolds for treatment. Shai'Rel observed these outsiders with mistrust, but up until they drew steel, she would stay her hand. Eventually they were let go without an incident.

In order to keep warriors from stagnating in one place, they would often move to other tribes. It allows for varied experience as the beasts and prey alike are different. During these exchanges she would fight the predators of the wilds, blight orcs and nagas. Even nature herself would test her blade with dangerous plants that could kill the carefree. And with each conflict and each hunt, she would improve her armaments.

She would have stayed in the Wilds, but a younger kesi brought attention to the Naga's improving equipment and techniques. They would soon become a larger threat, and only fool would dare deny that.

And so she and a number of other kesis decided to take on the Rite of Exile. A ceremony where they relinquish their responsibilities in order to pursue other goals outside of the wilds. She will carry with her the mark of an exile, a brand on her left cheek that marks the day of her rites. She would only be allowed back after a decade, or temporarily if she has a sufficient offering.

Leaving the brood was a serious decision and the mark served as a sign of dedication and reminder of a promise, despite how outsiders may interpret it.

Part of the rite was to choose a companion from one of the other allied tribes. Tradition states that their companion would be an anchor to home. It couldn't be another kesi, as the Wilds was home to others as well, and choosing one's own would be a selfish choice. Fortunately, she found a willing companion.
