Sariel Elatoris (Sair-e-l El-uh-tore-iss, literally meaning "Breeze of the Arcane Forest") is an Elven mercenary who resides in a large and luxurious Manor in Alliria and a smaller home with a luxurious interior in Fal’Addas though is often traveling for mercenary work.

History

Sariel Elatoris was born just over a century ago in the true Elven city of Fal’Addas deep in Falwood. Her parents were both well-educated Elven warriors who had left Fal’Addas in their youth for adventure, seeking to take up work and see what else the world had to offer. Over their long lives they took up many jobs of varying types, and morals, even getting to see the mythical city of Thiria.

Not many years prior to Sariel’s birth her parents were approached by a scholar from Thiria who wanted someone competent, who could also journal the experiences and observations of the area themselves, to investigate the Eldyr tree and the surrounding forest, a job they chose to accept. They had never seen or explored the immediate area around the Eldyr tree, but they were elves and navigating forests was a specialty. It took time, caution, and many hard-fought battles against monsters rarely known but eventually they reached the tree and were able to revitalize their weariness with the waters around the tree as they stood in reverence of it. They did not seek the tree’s bark, nor did they seek to climb it, as Elves they had a particular amount of reverence for the forest as a whole and the great tree itself. They journalled their experiences of the shadow of the forest and of the immediate area around the tree, its waters, and the tree itself. Additionally, they felt an odd but overall pleasant feeling through what they believed to be the winds of magic. As they turned to leave Sariel’s mother was hit on the head by an object, when she turned to find the object that had fallen on her she found it was a piece of bark from the Eldyr tree, a strange symbol still glowing on the surface as much of the bark often did. Feeling this was a request of the tree to take it she stowed it away. Eventually they made their way back out of the forest and, having been told a way to Thiria by the scholar, traveled to the mythical city to report to the scholar though they left out the experience with the piece of bark.

Soon after Sariel’s parents retired as they wanted to have a child while they still could knowing that they only had so much time in their naturally long lifespans. They chose to move back to the tranquility of Fal’Addas, the very same city they had grown up in to raise their child amongst their own kind. While Sariel’s mother was pregnant, she carved the piece of Eldyr Tree bark into a necklace that she wore often, deciding to give it to her child when they were born.

Sariel was born at night in 240 in a rather eventful birth. She was born in a bright blue glow that seemed to emanate from her mother’s necklace. As her father picked her up, he noticed that Sariel had what could only be described as a glowing tattoo on her face, the design of which matched the symbol that was on the carved piece of Eldyr tree bark that hung around her mother’s neck. The rest of the night was uneventful, her mother and herself having slipped into sleep. The next day however, it was clear something had happened, the cause of which must’ve been magic as her mother was now blind and no longer able to see. Her mother and father accepted this as fate however, seeking to raise their child to an adult.

Sariel’s childhood education consisted of a traditional Elven education, academically, socially, and in fighting, in addition to some education of the outside world that her parents had seen. It became clear quite rapidly during her childhood that Sariel had an incredible aptitude for magic, some of the more superstitious claiming that maybe she was the result of a union with a magical being though these were only stories. Her facial tattoo did however tend to both change shapes and glow It was during the start of her childhood that her mother gave her the Eldyr tree bark necklace she had made, a necklace which Sariel has never taken off since and later magically sealed onto her to prevent it being stolen.

As Sariel moved into adulthood after many years her parents did eventually pass away from old age as the flow of time does eventually come for all beings, even the Gods, though for Elves they did pass on a bit younger than normal. Sariel was left with significant wealth as well as the written knowledge from her parents and the familial house. Like her parents before her, Sariel sought to leave Fal’Addas to explore the world and to put her skills to use though unlike her parents she chose to lean more heavily into being a mercenary or assassin, wherever a blade was needed she could be found there. Unlike her parents her moral code was effectively morally bankrupt, though she treated the natural world, magic, and pure-blooded Elves with respect and kindness. Like many of her kin she too was arrogant and viewed the other races of Arethil with varying amounts of disdain, though she would recognize them if they performed a feat worthy of her respect. As far as her opinion of mixed-blood elves, half human half elf for example, she generally views them with indifference, often viewing their pure-blooded elf parent as making a major error in judgment more than anything else. Sariel participated in many civil wars and battles over many years and also in research and ruins exploration. With her wealth she chose to purchase a large manor in the city of Alliria and it was her primary residence, however she often visited her family home when she wanted to have peace and studying magic was easier to her in Fal’Addas with magic being easier to feel since Fal’Addas was much more intune with the natural world.

Sariel also noticed that as she had grown into adulthood, and used her magic more, that similar tattoos to the ones on her face had etched themselves onto her body. As far as Sariel could understand currently, it almost seemed like Rune magic and it did seem to enhance her physical abilities some and seemed to lessen the cost on her stamina of using magic in general but the oddity would be that there was no caster as her parents didn’t know rune magic and hadn’t been cursed, in fact it was almost as though the caster was the Eldyr tree since the tattoo design matches the bark design.

As of 370, Sariel continues to explore the world, accepting almost any contract, and has begun to research Rune magic more in an effort to understand the tattoos she has.

Appearance

Sariel is tall and slender, a lithe body befitting her graceful combat style and heritage and both her face and body are adorned with subtle tattoos that glow blue when she uses magic and the ones on her face sometimes mildly change designs, the tattoos seemingly being rune magic. She has very light blonde hair which tends to cover most of her elven ears, often reaching down to her shoulders or just below and shimmering silver eyes. She has also been known to braid her hair into a single loose ponytail braid.

Skills and Abilities

Sariel is trained in traditional Elven combat styles and weapons however she is most proficient with one handed swords in either a single sword or dual wield setup. She can often be found weaving magic into her sword fighting, typically with a single sword, in what some have called an Eldritch Knight. She has also been known on occasion to use polearms. Sariel also wears heavy mithril plate and chain armor.

Sariel is exceptionally proficient in her specialty of magic and knows a wide array of offensive and defensive/support magics. She also has very limited knowledge of Rune Magic as well from her decades of seeking knowledge on it. Sariel however is, by Elven standards, quite terrible with a bow having abandoned it when it became clear she was poor with the weapon in order to put the time to better use with her magic and sword skills, at her best she could be considered equivalent to a very average human archer. Sariel is also proficient in survival skills in most biomes and exceptional at surviving in and navigating through forests.

Personality

Like most of her Elven brethren Sariel is arrogant towards the other races of Arethil, humans in particular, often believing that she either knows better or that they are weak. She hasn’t been known to underestimate others in combat however and Sariel will recognize and give respect to another provided they have performed a feat worthy of her respect.

Sariel would be considered by some to be morally bankrupt since she is often willing to take on any contract with the exception of slaving though in truth, she’s more jaded by decades of living amongst races that constantly war, believing that if they are willing to commit the atrocities they do upon one another, then there’s no reason for her to turn down a contract. Those Elves who know her well would back this up as she treats her own kind with nothing but respect, care, and kindness.

Aside from that, Sariel is a little more impulsive and laid back then most elves putting value into having a good time as much as any human and does enjoy a good party. Rumors say that she is often found to be the life of the party though how true this may be is up to the person though she's reserved like most elves and not particularly boisterous so how true the rumors are is up for debate. Most who meet Sariel would consider her to be reserved, charismatic and intelligent, if a little rough around the edges at times.

She also can often be found looking for new knowledge, seeking to learn what she can partially for greater power but also because she, like many elves or scholars, enjoys learning something new.

Sariel tends to be very reverent of the forests, nature in general, and magic believing that most misuse or abuse them, in particular she believes humans to be the most problematic in this way since she believes humans understand the natural world the least and really don’t understand much of anything at all.
