Raaka
“In the dawning of Nirthas we toiled in the lands of the sun. The Elf did come and enslave us. They stole the Gift of Athar and made it their own; and our temples they broke. The Gods were destroyed, all save the cunning Harut, who had never limited herself to a Nirthani shrine. So it was by her aid that the last of us were saved, whisked away to the far reaches of our home with what remained of our pride and our power.”
-Chronicle of Fables, on the Raaka, 1:17
Overview
Language
Raaka and Nirthani are the two languages that find their origins in the Raaka. Both use lilting sounds, and are often mistaken in unknowing company as Elvish. But unlike their rival tongue, they make extensive use of inflection and intonation; and when spoken by a fluent speaker, both languages take on a song-like sound. The major differences from a scholarly perspective, are that Nirthani is older, and more methodical, and that Raaka embraces itself as a language of poets, crafting words for very specific ideas. Both share similar written equivalents, and indeed people looking to study ancient Raaka sites first study the Raaka tongue, and then Nirthani, many having decided that the older is more easily understood after the newer tongue.
Appearance
Raaka come in three major sub variants, but there are some universal traits shared between them all. The head of a Raaka is always that of some form of bird, and it is almost always covered in feathers. All Raaka have humanoid hands, but their feet are varied; however, on all of them, talons or claws are present. All Raaka are of a leaner build when compared to almost every other race, and are usually light of weight for their size.
The most common variant of Raaka are the Brisi. The Brisi are covered from head to foot in feathers, and sport wings on their backs. They stand at a fairly average height with common variations between 1.5 and 1.8 meters, and their feet are generally taloned and non-humanoid. All Brisi are able to use their wings for flight, and as such are often seen in extremely light clothing, so as to allow for long-distance flight without wearing out quickly.
The Strigi, like the Brisi, are covered in feathers and have flight-capable wings. The greatest differences that distinguish the two enough to make the Strigi their own subspecies are these: Strigi have a thick down coat beneath their upper feathers, their heads are usually of a form most commonly associated with Owls, and they are of a shorter, stockier build.
Lastly, the Toki are the most distinguishable from their counterparts among Raaka, and indeed many scholars have suggested that they are their own species; which might hold, if the children of Toki and Brisi weren't still capable of having fertile children with other races. The first notable difference is the Toki's lack of wings. Secondly, many Toki do not have feathers covering the whole of their body, most stop around the shoulders. Their feet are the only humanoid among the species, though still ending in claws. And of all the variants, they are the tallest, commonly reaching heights of 2.1 meters. Courtesy of their lack of wings, they are the most common variant to be seen wearing armor and carrying heavier loads.

History
The Raaka are a proud and ancient people, first born into the world around the same time as the Elves, and if legend is true, even pre-dating them. All that is known is that the Raaka lost a war against the ancient Elven empire that spanned the western world and were scattered to the corners of the world. But their doomed fate proved their salvation when whatever calamity befell the ancient Elves. However old or true the tale is, many a Raaka blames the Elves of today for injuries done ages ago.
