Sable Pembroke

Fascinated with tales of honorable heroes and legends of gallant warriors, Sable Pembroke stands in defiance to the dark, sullen standards of the average Academy initiate. A mountain of a man, Sable fights fiercely to protect his allies while crushing his enemies fairly, respectfully, and most of all, brutally.
Appearance
Sable is, quite frankly, huge. His great height and broad frame give him an imposing presence, and his commitment to his role as both a Dreadlord-to-be and a defender have instilled in him a dedication to peak physicality. As such, Sable is built. He keeps his face clean shaven, his hair swept back and neat. His facial features could be described as chiseled.
Sable prefers to wear heavy plate armor when on assignment, and relatively formal attire when not.

Skills and Abilities
Aside from well above average physical strength afforded to him by his physical training and large stature, Sable is an adept at using a tower shield and heavy flanged mace (the latter of which he calls 'Isabel').
His courageous attitude generally puts him at the front of any charge, clearing a path for his allies while simultaneously protecting them from harm with his shield and body.
Far more impressive than his martial skill, however, is Sable's focus on warding magic. Sable took his focus on the ordinarily mundane art to an unprecedented extreme as he matured, gaining a penchant for creating highly potent barriers out of arcane light. Such is his devotion to this tactic that many have heard Sable utter the line "the best offense is a good defense." Indeed, while Sable generally uses his barriers for protection, it is not uncommon to see him using them to force a duel between him and an opponent, or to simply crush a foe into paste.

Personality
Sable is oddly jovial for your average Academy initiate. Gentlemanly to a fault, Sable romanticizes the traits and values often depicted among heroes of lore and legend: chivalry, valor, gallantry, and honor. Sable has far greater concern for the safety and wellbeing of his allies than his own, and he is quick to anger when an ally is injured or if he is aware that innocents are suffering. More than anything, Sable hates underhanded tactics, preferring to engage foes head on and in single combat when feasible. So strongly does he adhere to this principle that he has been known to trap his more roguish opponents within his barriers and pummel them into submission. 'Mercy' is a concept he's still figuring out.
In fact, in spite of his aspirations, Sable is still prone to many of the same vices his classmates are. He is proud, and his temper has been known to be both short and explosive.

Biography & Lore
Taken from his family at a young age, Sable's earliest memories were of the stories her parents would tell him, fantastical tales of knights slaying monsters and saving innocents. After being inducted into the Academy, the then-small Sable's only solace was in those same stories. The young initiate would sneak off whenever he could to find and read more of his precious tales.
Of course, nothing so brazen goes unnoticed in the Academy. Sable would often be punished by the proctors for his behavior in many of the usual cruel fashions they so favored. The proctors were intent on beating such ideas from the boy's head, that the world had no room for novel concepts such as 'honor' and 'chivalry,' only loyalty and brutality.
Perhaps foolishly, Sable clung to his stories, even if he could only repeat them in his mind. Yet when a girl his own age, one he had called his friend, was mercilessly beaten by the proctors for daring to defy them, Sable did not gallantly come to her rescue. Instead, he watched in abject terror as she was murdered by her own teachers in front of the students, a lesson for the children of what happened when orders were challenged.
Sable cursed his weakness and his inability to help the girl. He grew to despise himself as he was, and he blamed himself, not the proctors, for her death. He was so unlike the heroes he venerated in his stories...
It was for that very reason that he swore to himself he'd become like those heroes. He'd strengthen his body and his magic so that no one under his watch would ever have to go unprotected again.
Now, at age 17, Vel Anir has faced a revolution. A society that he felt disillusioned with has been given a fresh start, a chance to breed new heroes the likes of those in fairy tales and legends. Sable wants more than anything to be the face of that new age, but he does his best to keep himself grounded. Valor is, after all, its own reward.
