Riven Seawraithe is a Kriven who has for years assumed the outwards persona of a rather wild-eyes human. He is a Templar and the leader of the Order of the Sundered Shield, a branch of Templars sworn to hunt down and destroy magic users and creatures in all their forms; his own flesh not withstanding. Riven has gone to great lengths to conceal his true identity, knowing that discovery would most certainly mean death, despite his own lack of magical talent.

Appearance

In his natural form, Riven is a 7 1/2 foot long merman, his skin a deep stone gray with brilliant electric blue fins, claws, and eyes. This is a form that he hides from the world at large; however, only reverting to it as a matter of survival and only in the strictest of privacies.

As a humanoid, Riven can pass for a human, albeit one with an aura of wildness and faint odor of the sea that lingers about him unceasingly. He stands an intimidating 6’ 9” tall and while lithe, does not appear undernourished or weak; his features almost more chiseled elvish than human. His dirty blonde hair os always a tangled mess that seems to be untamable. Many have spoken of the fierceness of his electric blue eyes, as if they portrayed the rages of the warmest tempestuous seas the world knew.

ARMOR & GEAR
Clad in Shining metallic scaled plate, Riven is the vision of a Knight Templar. His full length kite shield bears the crest of their Order upon a deep forest green background; a pentagonal shield hewn in two by a yellow bolt of lightning, one half red, the other blue. His two blades, Seastrike (silver-based) and Zeal (cold iron) hang sheathed on either hip. When going to hunt, a large warhammer hangs across the Templar Master’s back, pyramidal teeth dotting each surface of the weapon’s iron head atop it’s thick elven-crafted wooden haft. All of these weapons have been imbued with a buffer to ward against a myriad of magics, offering the warrior an added guard against those he hunts. This is common practice for the knights of The Sundered Shield.

Skills and Abilities

Water Aversion: In his human form, Riven is known by many for extreme dislike of water. He has been known to soak in a private bath, but publicly, he shuns and outright avoids any instance that may result in his being forced into the stuff.
Inhuman Strength: A trait granted to him by his Kivren heritage. It has not dulled with age or form.
Combat Prowess: Riven is an expert in the way of the sword, he prefers to wield two ornate rapier-like blades, but is equally capable with a myriad of weaponry as is befitting his rank.
Changling: Over the years, Riven has honed his ability to maintain his human form for months at a time, if not longer. The metamorphosis between mer and man forms is painful at best and Riven prefers to hide his natural state and the pains that accompany it.
Powerful Melodic Voice: Riven naturally orates with a smooth commanding voice that draws attention whenever he speaks. It is when he sings; however, that this power is truly on display. His eerie haunting baritone carries throughout the halls and nearby streets bearing a hint of woe that one can practically feel. As a Kivren, he mist be careful, lest Riven give in fully to his ability and cast the siren’s spell on those that might hear him. In all his years ashore, Riven has never forgone his love of singing and will often sing lengthy ballads in ancient elvish; words that many cannot understand but still can feel in their hearts and souls.
Leadership: Riven has ascended to the rank of Temple Master within the Order of The Sundered Shield and commands a loyal following of Templars.
Magic Aversion / Knowledge: As a Templar of the Sundered Shield, Riven has been indoctrinated by the cause. He has a deep-seated hatred of magic and all those who wield it or even appear to do so, hypocritical as it may be. To the same, he is well studied in a variety of the magical arts, both common and vague so that he may recognize their uses and users and stop them.

Personality

Riven Seawraithe is an intense man. He speaks rarely and when he does each word seems to carry with it an impassioned aura of natural power. He is stoic in his countenance, dedicated to his oath and creed and brethren within the Order. To those few who he truly calls friends, he is fanatic and loyal; even as he maintains them at arm’s length, an air of secrecy veiling him.
He is secretive, never telling more than necessary. Many say this is to protect his order, and so it is true, in part. He also is a man conflicted; a hypocrite in his own mind, ashamed by what he is. He carries a deep fear, a fear he refuses to acknowledge or give light to, that he will someday be found out and strapped to the torturer’s rack; tortured for his innate sins until death.

Biography & Lore

THE ORDER OF THE SUNDERED SHIELD

The Order is based out of a fortified tower, an ancient wizard’s tower, nestled just beyond the view of Fal’addas within the ancient trees of Falwood. It has been heavily fortified and the Templars claimed to have purged any residual magics from the place; but even they do not often venture into the deepest parts of the dungeons beneath. There, many have spoken of terrifying breathing and dripping sounds that seem to echo through the chambers. All prospective members are tasked with spending a night roaming the depths before being admitted to the ranks of The Order.

The Order of The Sundered Shield claims to trace it’s origins back to the Second Great Schism, having sided with those who declared magic itself the greatest sin that plagued their world. The Order and it’s members have all sworn an oath to not use magic and to destroy those that do. This has resulted in them committing genocide against entire people groups that seem to innately be magicians or peoples that actively undertook the study of magic. They regularly undertake hunts for magical creatures when they hear of dragons, lichs, were-beasts or more.

A loophole to the anti-magic oath is the Templars’ armor and weapons, blessed through an arcane ritual to withstand any magics thrown against them. The knight of the order sworn to conduct these rituals is looked down upon with scorn by his brothers and sisters for his flirting with magic, despite the saving powers imbued in the armor and weapons. This knight is closely monitored by The Order’s forge master who works hand in hand crafting the order’s armor, shields, and weapons with the profane knight.

The Order’s crest is a 5-sided shield that is split into two halves, one blue, one red, being bisected by a jagged yellow bolt of lightning against a dark forest green backdrop. Many legends surround this crest. One being the schism of the Templars by magic. Another story is that a founding Templar of The Order was locked in mortal combat with an evil wizard who cast a spell that caused the knight’s shield to crack in half, absorbing the blow and in it’s final moment saving the wielder. The Templar was able to use the broken and twisted shield, still strapped to his arm to bludgeon the wizard to death.
________________________________________

Riven was born within a Kriven tribe but as an adolescent, they were lost. He assumed that he was the sole survivor and has blotted the memory from his mind so much that even he cannot recall what led to him washing ashore alone. Over time, Riven fell in with several different fishing groups, but the pain of the open sea and open hatred of those around him for the unknown monsters of the sea drove the boy to trek inland looking for a purpose. Yet people are always attracted to what they are familiar with, even if it is what they were running from. Thus did Riven fall in with The Order of The Sundered Shield as a squire, working his way up through the ranks known for his ferocity of combat and dedication to his oath. Where other Templars were tempted by bits and baubles of magic users, attracted to users of magics, Riven was brutal and thorough. Nothing was allowed to pass by unscathed.
