Mirthwind is a dashing half-elven apprentice transmuter nearing the end of his studies at Elbion College.

Appearance

Mirthwind is a tall, lean half-elf with messy waves of chestnut hair, smooth-faced with a fair, rosy-cheeked complexion, curious, searching emerald-green eyes, a cocky, smirking grin, dressed in a collared, embroidered green robe fastened by a belt laden with pouches of various sizes, a pair of fashionable shoes, a gold pendant set with a small rune-etched emerald, three rune-etched rings of varying styles, and a rune-etched, smooth-sanded elmwood staff just slightly longer than he is tall.

Skills and Abilities

As a half-elf, Mirthwind will age about a third as fast as a human. He is naturally resistant to charm magic. He can see in dim light as though it was daylight, and complete darkness as though it was dimly lit. He can either sleep or meditate for at least six hours to feel fully rested. He only recently discovered his ability to reverie instead of sleep. He tends to sleep if alone or in male company, and reverie if any young women are around to impress or the situation demands partial alertness.

As an apprentice nearing his maester trials, Mirthwind knows a variety of useful cantrips and the usual low-level defensive and offensive spells expected of an apprentice of his year. He is a transmutation prodigy, and can change an inanimate mundane object into another inanimate mundane object of similar mass at will. The object will change back at the earlier of midnight or Mirthwind canceling the spell early. He can also momentarily change insects into butterflies at will, which he is fond of doing to impress any lady companions or simply to avoid midge bites. This latter trick formed the basis for both of his signature spells.

Mirthwind has recently "perfected" two signature spells to impress the jury of deans at his mastery trials: Mirthwind's Instant Isomorph and Mirthwind's Papillonious Permutation. He can use these higher transmutation spells spells up to eight uses/hours/minutes per day. Two of these uses are stored in his rune-pendant, and one use in each of his rune-rings. The other three uses are innate, but dependent upon a full night's rest. Only being partially rested would cost him an innate use, and being exhausted or barely rested would only allow one innate use.

Mirthwind's Instant Isomorph changes the caster or a living being into another living being of similar size. If cast on himself or a willing target, the spell lasts up to eight hours per day, until the caster cancels it, or until the caster's concentration is broken. If cast on an unwilling target. the spell lasts up to eight minutes per day, until the caster cancels it, or until the caster's concentration is broken. If cast on multiple targets, the duration is prorated accordingly.

Mirthwind's Papillonious Permutation counters an enemy spell by shunting its magic into creating a swarm of magical butterflies that flutter off a moment before dissipating back into the Weave. Each casting consumes a daily use of higher transmutation magic.

Mirthwind can move normally, carry on normal conversation, and perform other activities not specifically requiring concentration without breaking concentration. Being surprised or injured is likely to break his concentration. Unsurprisingly, his maester most often chides him on the fragility of his concentration.

Personality

Mirthwind has a ready grin, an eager laugh, and an overconfident swagger. He casually flirts with women in his orbit, and his eyes wander just long enough to appreciate the gods' creations, never leering. He smells the roses, pets the puppies, and lives as impulsive of a devil-may-care life as his apprenticeship allows, rosy toes scooched up to the very line of those limits.

Biography & Lore

Mirthwind's mother is a human tavernkeeper from the Port District; his father was an elf. They met at a wild celebratory revel back in her barmaid days, and she always told Mirthwind (she still calls him "Elgin" as she named him) that she was too mead-drunk to remember his name, only that she had a grand time that night and a befittingly awful hangover the following morning. Mirthwind made up for his lack by becoming everyone's friend. At age 6, he magically changed ones of his toys into exactly the toy he had just begged his mother for. At age 15, he applied to Elbion College, and entered at age 16. A transmutation prodigy, young Mirthwind proved a great success through his studies, despite pushing every limit imaginable. Having just "perfected" two unique personal spells, Mirthwind is nearing his maester's trials and making plans to set out on his own for a time.

References

Mirthwind is based on Alexandre Dumas's dashing, flirtatious protagonist D'Artagnan, just as a half-elf instead of a Gascon, and a transmutation prodigy instead of a fencing prodigy.
