Appearance: Merek is a tall, lean and gaunt man, with deep grey eyes and a constant troubled expression on his face. His skin is an unhealthy pale colour, with cropped, if not disheveled, brown hair. His face is meshed with scars from many fights over his long and grim career.

He wears a suit of dark grey, almost black armour plate, etched with the whispers of what he has heard from beyond the veil, its metal inscribed with the fears, hopes and ambitions of hundreds of dead souls. Merek is never seen without his blade, a cruel single-handed blase with a hooked end.

Skills and Abilities: Merek is a peerless swordsman and duelist, and has refined his mastery of the blade through countless years of incessant fighting. He is also a cunning strategist, laying traps and bait for his enemies.

Yet his greatest and most accursed “gift” is a warped form of telepathy, a burden that has hung over him since childhood. Merek is able to hear the voices of the dead, and converse with them, as well as see their ethereal shapes watch him at all times. This constant awareness of the pleadings of the slain has many uses, but Merek is unwilling to use them, instead his ability drains him of optimism and has left his skin an unnaturally pale complexion; leading to many incidents where he has been accused of being undead or a vampire.

Personality: Merek is a miserable and cynical soul, to the point where he is suspicious of any sign of compassion somebody gives him. This is thankfully rare, as most people, including the many mercenary circles he resides within give him a wide berth. Driven by his shattered mind, Merek is far from above cheating or foul play, and has gotten into situations where he has killed a supposed ally due to petty rivalry, loot or a fit of unbidden madness.

He is merciless in his dealings with enemies, and will often mutilate and torture them, keeping them within inches of their life, having no sense of moral boundary. Echoes of his former self sometimes surface however, and on occasion he will show quarter to a worthy foe, however it is unwise to assume this.

Biography & Lore: Born to a relatively wealthy merchant family in Alliria, Merek’s family was of good standing, and it seemed he would have a good education and upbringing. Unfortunately, he was struck with the affliction of telepathy early on in his childhood, and spent much of his time confined to his room, terrified to leave. As he grew older, his family grew increasingly concerned with his mental state and isolation. But luckily, Merek found some form of an outlet for his troubles taking up work as an adventurer.

He found respite in the warmth and camaraderie being an adventurer gave him, which eventually became a substitute for his family as he increasingly alienated himself from them. In the span of a few years, he had rejected his family completely, and driven into a spiral of guilt combined with the increasing severity of his unchecked abilities, he disappeared from Alliria and abandoned his friends in the guild, working as a vagrant mercenary; fueling his gritty view of the world around him.

Years passed, and the man Merek once was slowly buried...
