In his youth Maric was an incredibly gifted Sorcerer. His magics was born of his bloodline, his lineage dating back to dozens of different mages from all across the globe. As a student in Allthaven he succeeded and surpassed many of his peers.

For years he was praised as something of a genius, though these accolades somehow never made it to his head.

During most of his time in Allthaven Maric studied various forms of magic. His curiosity lay within the boundless crafts of Arethil. He found fascination with just how varying the Talents of Arethil could be, and studied voraciously at just what and where the Arcane came from.

Over the years his studies dug deeper and deeper. Eventually he began to conduct experiments, an attempt to create his own magics and control them. These experiments were never cruel, nor involuntary, though their craft was not always painless.

As time drew on, and results were scant, Maric's frustrations grew.

His experiments became desperate, and before long volunteers ran dry.

Eventually he pursued his research with the one subject he had remaining; himself. At first these tests went well. His own abilities within the Arcane increased, granting him more strength and understanding. Spurned on by success, Maric continued his tests. An act that would eventually be his downfall.

It was one of these experiments, one push too far, that saw Maric cast down.

In the midst of his test, Maric felt the rush of life pulse through him. A feeling of such energy and power, a crux of strength the likes of which he had never felt before. It's power washed over him, through him, and then was suddenly torn away.

In the span of a few seconds Maric was not only robbed of the power he had clutched, but all of his magic. Rent from his body in a single torrent the young Professor found himself naught but an ordinary man.

Though he searched for years, Maric was never able to regain his magic. Instead he took an oath, swearing upon his life that he would allow no man or woman to follow in his path and be taken by their gifts or passions. He threw himself into the role of a professor, teaching, guiding, and doing his best to see to the students of Althhaven.

That was until one day a beacon sparked.

An ancient thing, sat upon his desk and crafted as little more than a trinket. It came to life, a brilliant white glow that ushered him beyond the mountains.

Althhaven

Though not as well Known as Elbion or the College of Magic in Alliria, Althhaven is a unique school for magic nestled within the deepest reaches of the Spine.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to study at Althhaven. One must not necessarily be magically gifted or even inclined. There is no fee to enter nor live there, though there is a heavy price. Failure at Althhaven is now allowed, and the arts one learns there are only allowed to leave once the schools standards are met.

Students are given three spans of three years. At the end of every one of these 'terms' the student must display their mastery of one, if not more, of their chosen skill.

Each of these tests grows in difficulty, with the third and final being the hardest of all. The payment for failure is the students own soul. From the first test to the last, those who do not pass will find their essence torn from their body and turned to the schools own use.

Most of these failed souls are turned to monsters which are sent to roam the land around Althhaven in defense of the school itself.

This defense is necessary because of what Althhaven teaches. Unlike at some other schools of magic, there are no rules for what can be learned at Althhaven. Necromancy, Blood Magic, soul-marking are all practiced which are not only taught, but invariably explored and studied.

These teachings can be understandably upsetting for surrounding Kingdoms, Templars, and Monster hunters. It is for this reason that failed students become the very defense of the school itself, and to even reach Althhaven itself one is tested on their ability to survive.

One would think that with these conditions Althhaven would have failed long ago, yet the draw of power and knowledge is often difficult to overcome.
