Maelis, like his twin brother Erendrial, is a slave on the island of Argul Atoll, owned by the Slave Master and Pirate Warlord Dragut. Born with an extraordinary grasp and understanding of the arcane, however this power was kept hidden when he was enslaved. His sharp mind and exceptional understanding of written languages brought him close to Dragut to perform clerical duties, a fate far better than had he worked the labour camps as his brother has.
