A sketch seen in a merchants journal.

It came suddenly from above. A great shadow that darted across the ground the only warning before a great rush of air. The ground shook when it landed and nearly threw me from my seat on the wagon. And each step after like a rumbling of the earth before it spews fire.

Stood above the wagon when I finally got my senses, a crown of feathers poking across the top cover as it drew close.

The horses, oh those poor beasts. If I had been... never you mind. The horses had tried to bolt before I'd spotted the first sign of danger. Pulled tight and held fast to the reins to figure out what was happening. Didn't want a run away wagon over a fallen rock. Wasn't like I could tend to them amidst the crags if one threw a leg out.

The beast had my attention, and the horses. When I turned round, I spied the smaller shadows just a moment before the first screech filled the air.

One of them bird fiends. Harpy I think they're called. Evil things with a lovely face. A flock of them fell upon the horses. Talons and feathers was all I could see before the wagon bucked and broke beneath me. I fell into the bed, and saw the thing finally, that great beast. Paws of a lion, wings with beautiful feathers, and a face that made my skin crawl.

Like a great, harpy matron that thing. You'd know it if you seen it. Somethings just... off about it. Like it was playing at being human with that smile it gave me. And those eyes. Each like a sun burning bright with the moon blocking it out. The space around those burning orbs filled with the night sky.

Sends a shiver down my spine just thinking about it.

It let me go though. Seemed more amused than anything with my being there. Even swatted at a harpy when it drew near me to strike. My life and this journal are all I have left of that failed venture.

Appearance

The first notable feature about Evixera is sheer size.

Standing above a standard carriage while on all fours, and near to doubling in height when standing on her back legs. It's guessed she could easily carry four grown adults on her back if permitted to do so just from observations.

That aside, her physical body is a mix of different beings. With the largest portion of her being similar to that of a plains lion. Powerfully built and showcasing the muscle that lay beneath the flesh. All four limbs also resemble that of a lion, ending in large paws that can cover an adult human. Each front paw bears five claws, while her back paws only bear four each. These claws measure roughly around 40-50 centimeters, and are quite large around.

A rich brown fur covers her lower body and tail. The fur of her lower body is wiry, and course to the touch. Oils are present that cover this fur and make it resistant to water. A small tuft of nearly black hair crowns the tail, and is even more course than the fur before it. The softest patch of fur can be found where her upper body and lower body meet on her back.

Her upper body is covered in much softer fur that resembles blanched almonds in color. It is guessed that this is her undercoat. Extending from the junction between lower and upper body, it conceals smaller filoplume feathers across her face until they are articulated.

A grand pair of wings are centered on the back of her lower half. A touch over half of her total body length separately, though most often when interacting with other beings, the wings a partly curled up and behind her as a way of intimidation. The ends of her wings feather present what seem to be bioluminescent eye-like patterns on the largest and longest quills. Whether a trick of the eye or a use of magic, the glow of each eye-like pattern seems to ebb and flow with her speech.

Atop her head, is a crown of deep blue and pale gold feathers. Much like any bird, these feathers are articulated and can puff up or lay flat as she desires. This can betray her in some ways such as a physical tic while she speaks, or in betraying emotions while trying to remain calm.

The only adornments about her body are the baubles and trinkets the harpies bring her. Lengths of chain stolen from an overtly wealthy fellow long passed. Different lengths of jewelry bartered and traded for herbs from those willing to make the trek through the Spine. Her favorite item however is a rather splendid key adorned with a jewel that was gifted to her, which is said to unlock a hidden treasure within her mountain domain. It hangs about her neck above the pieced together plastron necklace of different coins and other baubles.

Skills and Abilities

Being a magical being herself, Evixera dabbles in less magic than most would believe. At least in the way they are used to seeing it applied.

Flight might seem a trivial matter for a being with wings, but with a body that is not nearly as adapted to flight as a true avian, there is an application of magic to aid in her flight. A manipulation of her own mass, and the air around her finds her dabbling in strange magics.

Illusions are some of her favorite pastimes to work. Whether crafting an image of herself to distract or mislead, to creating a mirror image for someone to ponder, Evixera has a keen fondness for this branch of magic and has actively pursued its use for some time.

Stalking her prey from the air or ground is part of the Illusion game she plays. Even being of gargantuan measurements, she is alarmingly silent given the natural adaptations of her feline extremities to disperse her weight as well as dampen the impact and sound of her passing.

Gardening is an ongoing hobby she cannot remember starting. Whether by happenstance or necessity, she has acquired quite the green paw for it.

Herbalism has been a point of study after she began her gardening hobby, and has been the source of many of her early trades in life for the flora she produces. A mutually beneficial sharing of ingredients and knowledge to preserve what was learned against the march of time.

Runecarving is a knowledge that she picked up in her trades when the being she traded with prior ceased to arrive. Exchanging the medicinal phials she produced for something new to sate her thirst for knowledge.

Personality

Capricious and whimsical are the two most common deductions made after encountering the Sphinx.

Pleasant interactions are not uncommon, and are somehow still the least expected by most that visit her. Evixera's capricious tendency comes into play when she feels slighted or tricked, and is the most expected method of interaction.

Usually found in good humors, the Sphinx is often times simply looking for her next amusing plaything.

Biography & Lore

Slivers of documented history in regard to Evixera the Sphinx exist, scattered across the realm aside from murmurs and old wives tales that might still remain.

Though she dismisses the majority of those spoken memories given how skewed the details have likely become over the years.

The moniker of Cloudchaser is a more recent addition to her aliases and nicknames. Among them include the Witch of the Farbough, Vexed Yarnspinner, Quilled Runecarver which are some of her personal favorites. Along with numerous varieties of less than respectable slurs and curses for the havoc she can create in her wake.

The most notable mention of Evixera is that of the garden she keeps. Unmarked and unknown, the Spine hides it's location better than any spell she knows of. Being forced through a mountain pass above the treeline that dives once more towards the lower reaches as if attempting to divide the world itself. Few creatures call the location home besides the Sphinx and her harpies and most beasts have kept to the paths avoiding the place.

Here it has been said she cultivates a myriad of herbs with various wondrous effects. All conjecture and rumor as most do not believe she or the garden even exists to begin with.
