Ser Elris Cedrasca is a templar knight of some repute. Currently, he is one of two individuals that entitle themselves as Lord Commander of the Order of the Black Rose due to the ongoing schism.

Appearance

Elris is a man of averages. Aside from his height, he is otherwise an unassuming man who takes pride in being unremarkable in almost every aspect. His hair is of a simple brown and he maintains a very well-groomed and trimmed beard of similar colouring. His face is equally unimpressive and shows many years past his actual age - the stress of his vocation having aged him significantly. Otherwise, he possesses a crooked nose, a dull green set of eyes and pale, thin, lips.

His clothes, equally, are unimpressive given his status and stature. Elris does not enjoy pomp or gaudy clothing. His armour is a simple unadorned plate, giving him equal parts protection and movement. On the odd occasion, he isn't armed or equipped, he chooses simply cotton cloth of plain, neutral, colours and sturdy boots.

In terms of armaments, Elris wields a well-made steel sword, inlaid with specks of silver so as to provide some extra offensive capabilities when dealing with certain undead. Additionally, he wields a heavy chambered mace of his own design - created so it can host his signature potion and emit mock-sunlight. Finally, as with all his order, he carries an alchemical satchel full of all the reagents and herbs he needs to synthesise potions.

Skills and Abilities

Elris has long been considered by his associates in the Order to be the archetypal templar. His capabilities within a martial and alchemical context are almost exactly equal in terms of skill. His best efforts have left him as a sort of jack-of-all-trades, rendering him far from the best in either field in his Order, but of sufficient enough skill in both to earn great respect.

Beginning with his alchemical capability, Elris is a talented alchemist and earned great renown when he concocted a potion that mimics the effects of sunlight when burned. He entitled this powerful tool the 'False Light' potion and it has since become a staple for many in his order owing in part due to its low-skill requirements to draft and its effectiveness in dealing with certain types of undead. Aside from this, Elris favours the 'Vulpine's Cunning' potion that enables an individual faster reaction, physically and mentally, for a time. Overall, however, Elris is familiar with many of the Order's staple potions and tries his best to employ them as little as possible.

In regards to his martial skill, Elris is a skilled swordsman and combatant. Depending on the type of opponent he is currently fighting, Elris can easily switch between his heavy chambered mace and his silver inlaid sword. Additionally, his mace contains a transparent interior chamber that enables him to burn his 'False Light' potion and illuminate an area.

Finally, Elris in recent years has gained some tactical knowledge and his pragmatic and logical personality have gained his reputation as a shrewd tactician. Several successful sieges against undead scourges, and a few intra-order skirmishes, have helped to cement this reputation.

Personality

Elris is not one to put on airs. As such he may come across as cold, unfriendly and unapproachable. While not necessarily a zealot, Elris is very focused and dedicated towards the cause of his Order. He enjoys the stability, the rules and is very straight-laced when it comes towards his duty. He does not deviate, he is inflexible and he expects integrity from all those around him. This strict nature has oftentimes worked against him and, particularly when he was a junior, he would come into frequent conflict with those around him.

If his personality were to be described in one word, it would be pragmatic. He is a logical, calculating and shrewd individual. He strives to improve Arethil and seeks to return the Order back towards its former station. Every move, every step, every action he takes is with that single goal in mind. That said, he is very much human. He empathises with those around him, which makes leadership such a difficult position for him. It proves to be a great strength and a great weakness. His enemies can often exploit his humanity to coax him into a trap or into certain unfavourable positions.

Biography & Lore

Elris was born into a remote farmstead within Cortosi. His childhood was average, his family were of no significant wealth, status or repute. Yet a tragedy blighted his formative years and set him upon the path that he currently finds himself treading. A nameless necromancer swept his settlement, destroyed farms, reanimated the corpses of his village and left Elris orphaned.

Two templars followed in his wake vanquished the necromancer with little effort and returned. There were few survivors and he helped those that remained, but there was only so little he could do. Elris, a fury burning in him that has since tempered, followed the templars. Time and again he was caught, left in civilisation, yet time and again he found the templars and followed.

Eventually, he was taken in as an apprentice and joined the same order as his masters. Elris was schooled in combat and alchemy and spent a decade serving alongside his masters. While his order travels in pairs, the three of them had formed a trio and had vanquished many great threats during these years.

In the end, as with all apprentices, he was forced to find his own path and Elris soon set about with his new partner. He fell into relative obscurity, his skills would place him above most of his order, but he did not seek fame or glory. He aimed, instead, to simply follow the creed of his brethren and tackle the undead scourge.

While working within the Bayou and tackling the undead scourge and other fiends that had sprung up in this hellhole, Elris discovered his greatest creation. A plant that absorbed sunlight during the day and, when harmed, emitted great and powerful light. With this plant, he synthesised the first 'False Light' potion, which he has sense disseminated across his order.

The subsequent years marked a rift within the Order of the Black Rose. Vendar Goldwater, the current Lord Commander, had shifted the focus of their templars and had advocated the use of dangerous and addictive poultices that came with great consequences. Elris did not approve and, while he was not one for disobeying his superiors, he started wearing a band of mourning.

Several of his order followed his lead. The band of mourning signified the death of the order, the loss of its integrity. The mourners soon grew and became significant enough to splinter the order. The two sides split and Elris, despite his own protests, was elevated to Lord Commander by his peers. In the subsequent year since becoming the leader of his faction, he has fought several unwelcome skirmishes and battles against Vendar's forces. While Elris does not condone or support the schism, he sees no alternative and aims to restore the order back to its former glory.
