How much can one lose before they take what they want?

There was a time when Elorath believed in a decency to the world. That in time, good men would prevail through the ill intentioned. Even in his relatively short time within this world, he has experienced the pain of loss again and again. He has found himself nearly alone, without family. Without any close friends. All he has left is that sense of loss and a will to fight against the parts of the world that has tried to make him feel weak.

Appearance

By Elven standards, Elorath is barely old enough to be considered an adult or independent. In spite of this there is a darkness to his visage that beguiles years of looming darkness. When he was younger, he was attacked by dreadlords and deeply scarred. He was the only one that survived, and even then it was just barely.

He has tattoos across his chest that are very crude runic magics. These runes are extremely inefficient and are a heavy strain on his health. His once black hair has become white and frayed. The entirety of his body rejects the magic of the runes, and it comes at a great cost every time he taps into their power.

Skills and Abilities

  • Swordsmanship - Elorath has been a gifted swordsman since his childhood in terms of technique. It wasn't until he was older that he gained the prestige of being a master swordsman, though.
  • Magical Scholar - Due to an interest in honing his relatively weak magical skills, he has a weak grasp of two relatively unknown schools of magics
    • Rune Magic - He has painted crude runes on his body that increase his durability, strength and speed. Due to the inexperience and inefficiencies within these runes, they come at a great cost to his own physical health. He becomes incredibly sick and weak after he has used them for any extended period.
    • Lithomancy - Although he has studied Lithomancy deeply, he has only tried to use its powers a few times. He wants to be able to become more comfortable with drawing Glyphs, but he hasn't used it too often.
  • Due to an upbringing near political figures, he has a general knowledge of politics and general scholarship. (e.g. reading, writing, etc.)

Personality

As a child, Elorath was never the fastest or the strongest. When his family was decimated by dreadlords, he began to feel as though if he'd only been stronger, he would've been able to save them. He was taken in by his mother's family, who were Thalien, he was given access to a large amount of studies.

Since his families' death, he has been dedicated solely to becoming stronger than the sum of his parts. He has become even more invested into his swordsmanship and has dedicated a huge amount of his time to studying arcane forms of magic. He has never been the strongest at traditional types of magic, so he has tried to compensate by it with a deep knowledge of specific types of magic.

Most of his personality is built around finding a way to make peace with the loss that he feels. He is burdened by a terrible desire for vengeance, but he has tried to channel that into more productive means. His use of chaotic magics shows his deeper self destructive tendencies, but it is largely over looked because of his past and skills as a warrior.

Biography & Lore

Not all beginnings are equal.
It can be sad, that the world be so cruel and unfair. The old and jaded like to brandish worn out idioms like a ward against their past pains, but to a child unfairness is a great demon, cold and thoughtless in its endeavor. Elorath was born premature, and had very little chance to live. He survived, but he was a generally unhealthy child.

The Gilgolor family was a minor house of the Sharion branch, therefore it was always stated that his duty was protection. To fight where the other clans languorously upheld their own duties. Therefore, it seemed poor luck or some cruel humor of a disinterested god that he'd been born weaker than his kin.

For all of his physical faults, his mind had always been sharp. He truly believed when he was younger that he could simply become better than anyone else. Where quickness lacked, he would make up with preemption. Where strength lacked, he'd finesse.

The reality of this folly came much later in life. A large contingent of his family had been sent to shore up a skirmish that no one thought would be a problem. However, the group ran afoul of Dreadlords. Elorath didn't remember the specifics of the encounter. He didn't know their purpose in the area, if it were legitimate or not. He wasn't sure if they'd struck first, or if his party had. All he was certain of was that he had been the only one to make it out alive, and it had been simply because he'd been seen as too weak to fight.

After this encounter, he became dedicated to finding a way to become more powerful. He had never been particularly skilled at traditional schools of magic, no matter his study. In his desperation, he turned to the arcane and chaotic. He did not learn enough about Runic Magic to justify what he did to himself, however, he still did it. He has been more careful with his use of Lithomancy, but he has studied it for many years in hopes that he might someday be able to harness its powers effectively.

The runes that he has on his torso are slowly killing him, and he knows it. They drain his strength with each use, but they have allowed him to achieve acclaim as a great warrior.

As such, he has become part of the honor guard to the great house of Thalien.
