Tall, with broad shoulders and a trim waist, Declan is reasonably good looking, although his face is marred with a slashing scar down the right side of his face, from his hairline through a sea of pale freckles across his cheeks, down to his sharp jawline. The rest of his body is also peppered with scars - slash wounds and stab wounds and even a few burns tell a story of a rough-and-tumble life. He keeps himself trim through rigorous combat training, exercise, and strenuous physical activities like hunting, swimming, and whoring.

Quite fastidious in his appearance, Declan uses his privileged position to his advantage, indulging in such extravagances as regular bathing, fine clothing and accessories, and other luxuries. Thus, he is seldom to be found dirty or sweaty unless it is immediately after training.

- Horsemanship: Declan is skilled in the riding of horses for speed, battle, and hunting.
- Combat: Reasonably skilled in melee and unarmed combat due to a lifetime of martial training, Declan has also experimented with bows although he is less comfortable with these.
- Charismatic: Being 'the Spare' of the family gave Declan a bit of leeway; less constrained by courtly expectations, he developed his own style that is easygoing and somewhat cavalier.

Because he was born moments after his elder brother Devyn, Declan grew up with all the education and privilege of his elder brother but with less responsibility and pressure - pressure which lessened over time as the boys developed from babies to children, from children to men. With the succession seemingly secured for another generation, Declan is less weighed-down with the pressures of court responsibilities and expectations. Those responsibilities and pressures that people try to place on him, he feels less obligated to accept. His loyalties are to his king first, his brother second, and his kingdom third, with the whims and requests of the nobility and gentry cluttering up his father's palace somewhere near the bottom of his prioritization. As such, he is fairly easy-going and genial with those around him, though he is slow to commit himself to anything they ask. It costs nothing to be polite, after all.

His carefree and cavalier attitude does not extend to his calling of martial prowess, however. He is not one to shirk his responsibilities in terms of training and combat. He takes the defense of the city and the castle seriously.

As the second son of the Havelock family, Declan feels a bizarre combination of bitter jealousy and relief that it is his brother Devyn who will inherit the crown. On the one hand, Declan couldn't be less interested in hearing all the petitions, dispensing all the justice, and finding a strategic marriage alliance. On the other hand, being so close in age and upbringing, it is easy to feel that the power and prestige that comes with being the heir and the future king would be better in one's own hand. This creates a tension within him - contrasting loyalty to and love for his brother with jealousy and an internalized rivalry.
