Appearance

Celestina is unique in her appearance. The entirety of her frame is fairly standard compared to a humans, although she does stand a bit taller than the average female human by a couple inches. Likewise, her body type is thin with some muscles shining through – a testament to the physical labor that her life has so far required.

More noticeable, however, is the white scales that exist in patterns over her skin. The white scales appear on her cheeks, and on her forehead, moving almost down to the bridge of her nose. Her arms have them as they twirl towards her shoulder blades, with lightly tanned skin existing between. Her legs have a similar pattern. It is important to note that the scales are a minority part – most of her skin is like a human, white but lightly tanned.

There are two other majorly noticeable aspects – the appearance of horns, that are held onto the side of her head where the ears on a human would be. These are primarily used for hearing but can be used (if carefully) in self-defense. Likewise, a long white tail that ends in an arrow point.

There are two scars on her – both symmetrically apart from each other on her back. They are about 5 inches vertically, tracing her shoulder blades. It is unknown how she got them.

Skills and Abilities

Silver tongue – A life of scavenging, trading, and working with the Komodi and clients/customers has resulted in Celeste perfecting her ability to charm those she speaks with. Likewise, she generally has a “good” aura about her and usually can deescalate situations.

Excellent hearing – The horns act as an amplifier of her hearing. While most of the sound is translated at the base of the horns, the rest act as a large receptor for sounds. They are also sturdy, in the event that she gets hit by them and protects her head. On the flip side, if the horns are hit, it can temporarily disable her either by pain or by reducing her hearing.

Domestic chores – Ever since she could remember, she was tasked with clean up and with cooking meals. It wasn’t always her task, but it often was. And due to this, she can make a room spotlessly clean and make a meal to die for.

Sewing – A side gig she started with the mentorship of an older Komodi, Celeste is a seamstress on the side. Whether it’s creating a dress, a pair of breeches or a simple repair – Celeste is often one of the go to’s in her tribe.

Melee combat – She knew from a young age that she was different than most, and that difference meant she had to protect herself. She has trained with a variety of melee weapons, particularly generic swords, and has turned out to be quite the swordswoman. On the flip side, she also discovered early on that bows & arrows were not her forte.

Personality

Celestina is described in short as kind, outgoing, and generous. Likewise, she’s also described as a bit temperamental, sometimes withdrawn, and a bit of a spitfire.

All of which generally apply to the young woman. Dealt one of the darker cards of life, she has had to build and prove herself to dozens, if not hundreds, of people who didn’t (and still don’t) believe in her. Because she has managed to do so, she considers herself lucky, humble. She gives back when she can. And most importantly, she tries to befriend as many as possible, especially in the cities (and away from the Komodi.)

On the opposite end, she has had to fight for her right to live within a hostile world. It’s made her confident, perhaps even arrogant. She can be a bit of a spitfire – passionately arguing about what she believes is the right cause with no waiver or exceptions. This can roll into a somewhat temperamental attitude. And sometimes, things just get too much and she withdraws.

Surprisingly well adjusted for the life she’s so far lived, she is a little quirky, rough around the edges, but ultimately strives to be a better person.

Biography & Lore

“Emmalynn, we have to go…” A deep voice whispered with sympathy. A young woman glanced towards the source of the voice before her eyes glanced back to the bundle of clothes in her arms. A bundle of cloth that held the soft cooing of a baby, one that had only recently been given life in the world.

“Need to leave,” croaked an older man. A Komodi, a member of a caravan passing through the Spine to sell goods at the nearby city before moving back down towards Alliria. “Sun coming up soon.” His scales hand reached to the sky before he moved it back down, opening his arms for the child.

“Okay, okay,” she whispered as she kissed the forehead of the babe and gently moved her fingers along her skin. And then she passed the baby to the Komodi, who nodded.

“And the gold?”

“Here,” the voice from before whispered as he handed a sack of gold coins to them. “Keep care of her,” Emmalynn whispered.

A snap in the woods caused all parties to glance. “Go.” The Komodi whispered, himself and his colleague behind him turned to leave.

“I love you,” whispered that deep voice once more as he wrapped the woman in his arms and opened his wings to fly.

***

Celestina’s story begins like many others. It also diverges in a very different way than most other people. The beginning of her life was within the bustle of a large caravan of Komodi.

An elderly Komodi had been charged with rearing the young girl from just a babe to adulthood – and she got most of the coins that were given from the birth parents to the tribe for caring for the girl. The Komodi, T’szerena, was kind, motherly, and educational (with her limited knowledge) to the young halfing – but only when none where looking. At night, she would teach the young Celeste about life.

But during the day? The young girl was a worker bee who was mostly ignored. With others about, it was improper for T’szerena to show emotion, compassion, or other traits to her. She was to do her chores as requested with minor, if any, exceptions. She did, at least, start Celeste out slowly with her chores – she was reasonable with what the girl could and couldn’t do.

Her childhood was remarkably bland. She followed the caravans and learned as they went from town to town, city to city. T’szerena taught her how to scavenge, especially during stops in potential high value areas. She also taught her how to barter – with Celeste’s first trade occurring at a young 6 years old. Whether it was mercy from the merchant or not, she held onto the coin that she managed to get for years as a prized token.

As a child, she did manage to have some normalcy. The caravan was large, winding with many children. The majority were ambivalent about Celeste. They did not care one way or another about the girl, and in general ignored her. There were quite a few bullies – Celeste looked somewhat liked them, but different. Worst yet, she couldn’t breath fire.

A Frond was the worst insults they would throw at her. While it was no secret that she was not a Komodi, it did not change the reaction from the more mean-spirited kids who teased her.

On the opposite end, though, she found a small group of good friends – friends that remain close to her to this day. The ones that made it all worth it. During city visits, they would often sneak around the areas. Whether it was buying a fancy dress or trying new, exotic foods, they would often find themselves in some type of new environment to explore. Often times, though, they had to be careful – the Komodi were generally viewed with disgust and while Celeste didn’t quite fit a Komodi, she was near them and thereby guilty of association.

Nonetheless, as she reached her teen years, she did find herself quite lonesome. None looked like her. Even her closest friends were somewhat shy of her in the public eye of the caravan. To cope, she did what she knew – took on more projects. She learned to sew and discovered an unknown talent for threading clothes. She became more popular; she even became one of the go to individuals for clothing needs.

The Caravan brought Celeste far and wide, raised her (with its limitations), and made her the woman she is today. But she longs for something different. She would miss her few friends and her even older caretaker, but she felt as if her life on the road was at an end. Where she would end up, though, was unknown.
