Calrin Ilych
Cal, as he is known by most of his friends, was born in the free city of Rhagos.
Though his family was once wealthy and well regarded, by the time of his birth Cal's mother and father had fallen on hard times. Their various holdings had either fallen into destitution or disrepair. Much of their wealth was squandered, and most of their possessions were either sold off or simply taken in order to service various loans.
Growing up Cal remained largely ignorant of these troubles, running with a small group of noble children and often times landing himself in small bouts of trouble.
Though not entirely aware, most of his families problems came from the fact that his grandfather had been an outstanding voice against one of the High Priests of Rhagos. His family was marked out due to this by higher powers, and over the years was slowly driven into destitution. To try and counter their broken reputation, Cal's father encouraged him to join the Church.
Hearing this all his life, Cal eventually agreed in a bid to gain his fathers approval.
He did this by first joining Rhagos' expansive military which was of course controlled by the Church. Though never the best soldier, the young man did manage to survive several small Campaigns undertaken against both Orcish Raiders and the ever expanding Molthal.
Eventually his time in the military as well as several bribes placed by his father allowed him to join the Inquisition. Here Cal began to train as one of the Famed Witch Hunters of Rhagos, and quite surprisingly took to his training quite well. This should have been what allowed his family to reclaim some of their standing within Rhagos society, but was instead their final undoing.
An incident, of which little is known, saw Cal expelled from the Inquisition. Following this marring of both the family name and his son's foolishness, Cal's father took ill and passed away shortly after.
His mother, quickly disowned Cal after his fathers passing. Attempting to drive a distant wedge between herself and her now disgrace of a son to salvage any reputation that she might have left. Cal, being the male hair, managed to hang on to some small estates on the outskirts of Rhagos' controlled lands, though these are now little more than ruin.
Rhagos
Built on the ruins of a much more ancient city, Rhagos is a massive urban sprawl surrounded by a single great Bulwark that the cities residents claim was built by their once living Gods. Rhagos is an incredibly religious city, worshiping a Tribunal of three Gods who once walked the world of Arethil among the common people.
It is said by the Priests of Rhagos that the city was founded and built by the Gods themselves. That it's mass size could only have been brought about by Divine direction. Whether or not this is true, Rhagos is a truly sprawling city, stretching out for several miles in a valley on the edges of the Spine.
The people of Rhagos believe that their gods once walked among them, providing protection and granting them a near utopia. This belief ties in closely with the architecture and construction of Rhagos. Throughout the entire city there are dozens of cathedrals, temples, and statues all dedicated to the three gods.
It is believed that three Gods, once living, were powerful enough to raise mountains, create oceans, and grant their followers ever-lasting life. The Tribunal were loving, doting on their people and inspiring great deeds in their worshipers.
This power and this love, it is said by the Priesthood, is what inspired the jealousy of the neighboring Courts. The story is told that six Kingdoms surrounding Rhagos, each lead by a powerful mage, banded together and made war upon the Free City. It was during this war that Mage-Lords devised a ritual, and using their magics they bound and slaughtered the Three Gods of Rhagos, stealing their power and expelling them from the mortal plane of Arethil.
The tragedy of the Tribunal quickly spread, and like never before the people of Rhagos rose up in their rage and fought back against the Six Kingdoms. After a long war they were victorious, and the neighboring Courts were wiped out.
It is for this reason that Magic is utterly reviled and illegal within the walls of Rhagos and it's surrounding lands. This policy has been in place for a thousand years, and is strictly enforced by the Inquisition, men and women who root out Mages and either imprison, kill, or 'still' them.
Most people living in Rhagos are intensely devout, or at least pretend to be.
The city is strictly controlled by the Priesthood of Rhagos, lead itself by a Council of Thirteen High Priests. Each of these Thirteen make their home in one of the massive Cathedral's and hold sway over a portion of Rhagos itself.
